Discussion Playing FFXI on the PS2 again after 15 years

Post image

Takes me back to the launch days of 2004.

FFXI works natively again on the PS2, no mods or alterations needed. Just set up POL and install FFXI from the discs, and then download the version updates like the old days. Broke out my old HDD and network adapter, which I haven't used for the past 15 years now. Absolute dream come true, never thought I'd be able to do this again.

Self Promotion Eldevar Online - Open Alpha Playtest

Hello!

I've been working on an MMO for just about a year now and I'm ready to start getting some feedback from those in the MMO community. At a super high level, the game is a tab-target, theme park, 2D MMO. It has most of what you'd expect from a theme park MMO, just in a 2D format. The world is entirely open, there's quests, dungeons, world bosses, world events, the holy trinity and character customization. If you've played WoW or FFXIV in any capacity it'll feel very familiar. Combat-wise, it’s closest to WoW in the TBC/WotLK era.

The game is meant to be fairly casual and basically anything you do in game progresses your account. Mounts and runes (similar to the card system from ragnarok) are shared account-wide, any gear/equipment can be shared to your alts, and there is an "account level" system that gives you flat benefits for alts(out of combat move speed, slightly more exp, out of combat regen).

One thing I do want to note is this is also on mobile, but it was first built as a PC game -> ported to mobile, rather than building an MMO with mobile first in mind. My goal was to make a game that could be played both on mobile and PC, without making mobile sacrifices. That still means you get a seamless open world, and potentially hundreds of players on screen (if you opt in, you can control how many players you see for performance reasons on lower end hardware).

Since I know it'll be asked, my plans for monetization are very similar to RuneScape(OSRS), where there will just be a small subscription($3-5) to access the full game. I abhor MTX and don't plan on adding any. Server costs are marginal and I don't need outside money to support them. My plan with the 1.0 release is to have that be the 'base game' and then anything additional added outside of the initial 3 zones(forest, swamp, badlands) will require a membership. That said, my goal is to keep the world alive and not have zones be forgotten, so older zones will constantly be getting updates for all levels of players. The game will also eventually be coming to steam, it's just a bit too early in the dev/release process for me to set that up. Release will probably be midway through 2027.

I'd specifically love feedback on basically all aspects of the game; the intro, UI, gameplay feel, level design/layout, if you think it's boring, if you think it's great...If you have concerns about generative AI in games, you can learn exactly what is/isn't AI on the AI disclosure on the website(it's just launcher/website art at this point). There are 3 artists that work on the game and all the in-game art is hand drawn specifically for Eldevar, outside of some indev placeholders, which there are not a lot of.

I really appreciate you all reading this and a huge thank you to anyone who decides to try the game out. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Not my server, but a friend of mine has been working on this for a while and I wanted to help get the word out.

If you played Myth of Soma back in the day, it's coming back as Myth of Soma: Rebirth on Saturday 31 October. It is no longer just the original game / server files lots of changes to be enjoyed.

New Additions include:

  • New client - DX12/Vulkan, 4K, uncapped FPS. Also will run on your Android tablet.
  • Rifts - Dungeon styled instances with across race team up etc.
  • Combat rework - new and improved auras/spells (Rain of Arrows, Blink Assault plus too many to name)
  • Crafting is reworked - Devils can now craft, crafting automation and better success rates.
  • Rested EXP and catch-up mechanics, Lots of QoL changes to stop bricking your character early on.
  • No meta classes - every weapon has had some sort of change or update to bring it to a good level.

no cash shop, no sub, nothing to buy.

There's also a weather system and a rearranged version of the original soundtrack, which is a nice touch for anyone nostalgic.

Question Mouse Recommendations

Post image
134 Upvotes

Hello, I currently use a wired Razer Naga mouse to play World of Warcraft. I find I only ever really use buttons 1-6 and never use 7-12. I’m looking to get a new mouse for when Forever comes out. I’d like it to be wireless ideally with 5-8 buttons, any recommendations would be appreciated!

Discussion Can we have a minimum Karma needed to post on this subreddit to fight AI Slop games being advertised?

It feels like there's more and more people who prompt their whole game with Free Claude and Codex.

They don't even try to hide it anymore and with how good AI is becoming, we'll have more and more of these slop games.

Discussion Decided to revisit Black Desert Online after a few years. Surprised by some of the changes, was not expecting to go to school.

I hadn't played since the Woosa class dropped, and then I just made her class and immediately dipped. I feel like rambling about it after giving it another shot, so here we go. Also, apologies to anyone confused by area or gear names.

So, first surprise was the revamp on the early story. More voice acting, more fleshed out characters and lore, it was honestly good stuff and I found myself liking a lot of the main cast until I hit Calpheon. The Councilers can ALL go fuck themselves. But even there I found some surprisingly entertaining writing with them being more fleshed out as self serving, back-stabbing, two faced politicians.

The downside is that you spend significantly less time killing shit than before and the flashy combat is a significant part of the game's appeal. So on one hand I enjoyed the new writing, I was mostly bored out of my skull near the end until I hit the bits that weren't changed, starting at Mediah. Granted, I had the option to skip most of that, and if I make another character I absolutely will.

After that were some changes and additions to the basic mechanics. The Seasonal experience has been streamlined a fair bit and you don't even need to bother upgrading that bigger gear anymore, different level up rewards will just give you PEN Tuvala gear. Which is nice for stepping stone. A very pleasant surprise was the change to Enhancement materials and currencies. They have their own dedicated inventory sections, take no weight, and I believe are shared across your whole Family. It was a pain in the ass constantly having to dump them in storage to keep grinding.

And then I went to college. At some point the game added Olvia Academy, where level 60+ players can go to brush up on combat basics, test themselves against enemies from high(to me) level areas, learn various Life Skills, and accept quests from a board. It's funny, I often read about Adventurer Academies in litRPGs, never thought I'd join one in an MMO.

The campus looks fucking amazing, the staff are a bunch of people players could meet on their travels, the fights put me on death's door and reminded me why I wanted to play BDO in the first place. Had a mission to go fight some "Bumbling Buccaneers" and they quickly reminded me to not judge a book by it's title, I was fighting for my fucking life. Also the school gave me a free uniform that looks pretty nice, so that's neat.

Lastly, the Life Skill system saw something of an overhaul. And I love it. Now LS levels are shared across the entire family. You decide you wanna change mains for some reason, you don't lose all your prowess in fishing, hunting, etc. And each Life skill has a loadout for gear that's applied automatically when doing the associated task(s). Which are also shared by the whole family. So for the first time in a very long time I'm actually looking forward to doing non-combat shit in an MMO.

Oh, they also added a quest that basically combines all your storages across the world into one. That's been very convenient.

Self Promotion Silkroad Online is somehow still alive in 2026

I’ve been playing Silkroad on and off for years, and it’s pretty crazy that this game is still around almost 20 years later.

The official game isn’t in a great spot, but the private server community is still surprisingly active. There’s just something about Silkroad that keeps people coming back, despite all its problems.

I recently made a video going over what the game looks like in 2026 and figured some of you might find it interesting!

r/ironswarm is back with mutated ants in low-poly. The game recently emerged from a grand experiment in fancy rendering before returning to its roots. It's ben two years and it's still got plenty of jank but things are moving right along. So if you're into large open worlds with existential threats (PvE) + PvP keep an eye on it. The project is being built on a 10+ year old engine and was heavily inspired by Planetside 2, Foxhole and Runescape.

Discussion I loved the Archeage Chronicles Demo

played through with two separate classes, Warrior and Mage. Combat felt great, action packed and the combo system felt clean.

I've been waiting for a good action mmo forever and if they don't screw up monetization I think this could really be something special. Probably asking a lot, but due to the announced change of un-gender-locking the classes I'm optimistic. How does everyone else feel?

Self Promotion First peek at our cozy idle MMO

Thumbnail
youtube.com
60 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

We’re a small team, and we’ve spent the last two years building Realm of Idlers in our free time. It’s finally at a point where we’re comfortable showing it.

What is Realm of Idlers? A cozy pixel-art MMO where your hero keeps gathering, crafting and fighting while you do other things. Explore a living world with friends and strangers, trade with other players, take down bosses, and master 14 skills at your own relaxed pace and more coming soon.

It’s like a menu-based idle game, except you actually see your character walking, mining and banking on their own while you get on with something else.

All the art is hand-drawn, pixel by pixel: every character, tree, rock and building.

Playtests are coming soon! If you’d like to try it, wishlisting on Steam is the best way to hear when they open.

Discussion People being tribalistic towards other MMOs(ala Console Wars)

I've been eating good between a few of the upcoming MMO releases like WoW F, Monsters and Memories, and some VR MMOing Ive been doing.

However, I have noticed a weird trend, or maybe I've just been away from the discussions too much recently, of people just hating on other MMOs. The WoW Forever drama is understandable as there is retail versus classic tug of war going on in that game, but what boggles my mind is the current flood of hate posting in Monsters and Memories.

The devs laid out very clearly this is meant to be brutally old school without any modern conviences. However the MnM sub is flooded with angry posts about how the game should change. Super toxic people talking about the game is going to dead when WoW F releases and all of this other hateful rhetoric.

The devs are not designing MnM to compete with wow, they never intended to get so many subs on launch. They are just a few dudes who made an mmo in their free time with their own pocket money.

I don't understand the need to vehemently hate something that wasn't designed to your interests when their are so many themepark MMOs that may be a better fit.

Surely there is better use for their time.

Edit: One of them came here and gave us a live example:

https://old.reddit.com/r/MMORPG/comments/1xfd5r5/people_being_tribalistic_towards_other_mmosala/19rnfda1vr5vn/?context=3

Even in his history he's just spamming the game is DOA.

Discussion Two Upcoming MMO-Lites That Look Good

Long time lurker here and rarely post on Reddit at all. I love the MMO genre but haven't really been interested in anything that is coming out in the near future (no shade if you are excited about Wow Forever). Yesterday I came across two new games that are releasing into EA next week and thought both were really interesting in different ways. Thought others may be interested as well (FYI these aren't traditional MMORPGs, more like MMO-Lites)

The first one I came across was Scramble Knights Online (silly name I know) but its like a top-down Zelda RPG with good character creation and build diversity which is honestly a combo I didn't even know I was interested in until I saw it.

The second one was called Everlast Undying Tales and its like a Palia crossover with New World. One of the things I hated about New World (and Palia) was there was no options to tweak your face beyond selecting an option from a preselected list, no sliders. I realize that's not a big deal to everyone but it kind of drove me nuts.

Anyways I am not affiliated with either project in any way, I just happened to come across them both when reading about Next Fest and saw they were coming out next week. Wanted to post in case anyone else may be interested in them like I am. Hope everyone has a great Sunday! The Steam pages are below:

Discussion How should MMO's balance content around "free handout gear"?

Many MMOs have "free handout gear" which players are given for free when they first reach endgame, because the devs want everyone to queue for the same quests/raids/whatever (as otherwise, newbies would be getting stuck in lower level content and quitting before they can reach the endgame where 90% of players are).

But in my experience, content is NOT balanced around this gear, except for the story quests you are supposed to solo. It's balanced around "budget gear" which a newbie would usually take several weeks or longer to get. And theres usually a very big gap between budget gear and handout gear, because otherwise players would complain they are spending resources to make gear that is not a big improvement over free gear.

So to give an example, let's say you have a simple instanced quest/dungeon that a party with 100% budget gear would take 5-6 minutes to clear because it's a DPS rush and impossible to fail. A party with 100% handout gear would take maybe double that time, or longer....especially if they don't know how to play their class, don't have all skills unlocked, don't know all the boss mechanics, etc...

So you end up with a weird situation where people in handout gear can drag the rest of the party down because the game scales enemy HP based on party size and they are doing a fraction of the damage that players in budget gear are doing. Which encourages players to have a "i dont want to party with people in handout gear" mentality.

And its not like the newbies are doing anything wrong, this is the content they are supposed to be doing to progress, but it's just not balanced around their level of gear. Why? To put everyone into the same queue.

The devs COULD create multiple difficulty levels for a quest/raid/whatever...one difficulty balanced around newbies in handout gear, one for normal gear, one for BIS gear, etc. The problem is, the matchmaking queue would take a lot longer unless it's a big MMO like WOW and player count is not an issue. If you have ever sat around for hours trying to get a raid going in a low pop MMO, you know what im talking about. They don't want newbies to be stuck in the newbie queue because 90% or more of the players are in the normal queue.

And of course, if you balance content around handout gear, which is substantially weaker than budget gear, then players in budget gear would complain it's too easy and demand harder content. But you cant make the gap smaller between handout gear and budget gear or players would complain there's no reason to grind to get the resources to upgrade from budget gear...

So the devs default to the easiest solution: balancing the game around players in budget gear and then going "well, sure, it takes a lot longer if you have newbies in handout gear in the party, but hey, im not playing this game, I dont have to deal with that".

Can you think of a better solution?

Discussion Will you play WoW Forever—yes or no, and why?

Will you play WoW Forever?

I’d like to know what people find interesting about WoW Forever, what makes you want to play it, and what doesn’t.

As for me: I won’t be playing it.

What appeals to me is that the level cap stays at 60 and the leveling process is on the slower side. No rushing around. (Though most players will, as usual, rush to the endgame anyway. Blizzard won’t be able to change the player base they’ve cultivated over the past 20 years overnight.)

What doesn’t appeal to me at all: the old Classic classes that I’m sick and tired of, and no LFG/LFR. Now, some might say that LFG/LFR has destroyed the social aspect of MMOs, and yes, in part you’re right (though it also has to do with the players themselves). But the thing is, I still remember what it was like 20 years ago to look for groups in MMOs, and I’m done with spamming the chat for 20 minutes looking for a tank or healer, only to wait another eternity until enough people show up at the portal. When I come home today after my 8-hour workday, I want to log in, quickly find a group for a dungeon or raid, and have some fun right away. I have a life now, and I’m not 16 anymore, back when I used to play WoW late into the night. Today, I want a modern game, not nostalgia.

Question Anyone remember Tales Runner?

I've played this game since 2010 and I still login to the korean server a few times a week to this day. It's really unique for a racing to also be an MMO. It's was my free version of mario kart i played as a kid. and i grew up on animal crossing so the farming sim part was also so fun to me. They've had a lot of collabs with k-pop groups and other games too. the skill ceiling in this game has always been pretty high and its super sweaty if you want it to be. But there is also boss battles like traditional mmos wear your gear matters etc.

I think I played every single server that launched for this game including the like 3 failed english launches.. This game will like forever be a big part of me but I'm sad cause I feel like no one remembers it haha. I've met friends from Thailand, Korea, China, Norway, Singapore and much more and I still talk to these same people from 2010 in 2026

Korean servers are still alive if anyone plays I would love to meet more people

my very first tales runner video back in 2010

one of my favorite maps in the game i speedran (2016)
