Should Servers be REQUIRED to share their population counts in order to be listed on the subreddit? (POLL)

One thing that is generally left out, usually because servers generally do not like to broadcast their populations. So what say you community? Should we require any server community to provide at least monthly updates as to their servers actual population in order to maintain a listing on the subreddit?

Discussion What are the best servers right now?

I’m looking into playing SWG, and I’m a little confused by all the available server options.

In terms of what I’m looking for, I’m kind of ambivalent about the combat system, I’m more interested in roleplay, activities, and custom content. Controller support would be nice, but I’ll probably end up using my keyboard, if only to operate the chat. Ideally it wouldn’t be too hard to become a Jedi, but I’m willing to jump through some hoops if necessary.

So far SWG Restoration looks pretty good, as does SWG Legends, but I’m not sure if these are really the best options or just the ones I’ve encountered so far.

NGE An Inside Look At Star Wars Galaxies Death Troopers - 11/06/2009

11/06/2009

The Death Troopers update arrived with a splash of gore on October 13th. Tales of Imperial experiments gone awry were rapidly transmitted in hushed tones across the galaxy and gleefully horrified people rushed to Dathomir to investigate the rumors themselves. Some even lived to tell the tale.

Jaskell, a Designer for SWG, revealed what it took to bring this project together:

“Documenting ideas for Death Troopers content was a group effort. Loche, Fiasco and I locked ourselves in a small room and hashed out the main story line. It was here that we decided where the theme park would be located and how it would be laid out. We also went over how the story line would be delivered and how the characters from the book would be introduced.

Right from the start, Loche wanted to make the themepark inclusive to players level five and higher, with repeatable content and the ability for all three factions to participate in the main story line. Fiasco had the idea of the virus being communicated as a debuff, and I was very much interested in making any new content differ from previous theme parks.

World Building the Death Troopers themepark was a lengthy and challenging process. The entire area had to be flattened, each camp created and the main dungeon decorated. A lot of custom functionality went into how the Death Trooper inhabitants behave. Hanse took on the job of creating the Cornburr and Undead Rancor functionality while I worked on making survivor AI path to specific locations while being attacked by undead. Art put together some awesome animations for our new undead enemies and in the last week thick fog and sounds were delivered. After that point it felt like I was logging in to a completely different game.”

Developed in conjunction with the new Del Rey book, “Star Wars: Death Troopers,” the update was launched in time for Halloween, but persists as a permanent addition to the game. That means if you haven’t tried it yet, you can go now! Take some friends for good measure and remember that if things go very wrong, you don’t have to run faster than the zombies… just faster than your friends!

May the Force be with you—you’ll need it!

What Are Players Saying About Death Troopers?

“So far, for me, it is JUST RIGHT.  I even liked the challenge of the 4th survivor and having to do it 8 times before that booger made it!” Jod Iegemai

“I definitely think the difficulty is just right.”  Ty’ren

“This is a refreshing change…. PERFECT!”  Krelos

“This is one off the best updates I've seen in a while. Undead rancor? Amazig.”  Ravager

“The Update is fun, challenging and has plenty of solo stuff to do until you get to Epsilon.   Then you have to organize a group, use some strategy and have some skill.  Isn't that what MMO's are all about?”  Strolan

We hope that you enjoyed this behind the scenes look at what went into the creation of Game Update 14, Death Troopers.

Discussion Original SWG Launch Party Invite from 2003

Post image
94 Upvotes

I saw the autographed strategy guide I let go of recently on here, and while I'm going through a bunch of old shelves and files I'm finding some fun relics from my time on the SWG team (2001-2005ish).

Just unearthed this in a folder of stuff from that era---it's the original launch party invite from summer 2003. The game launched in June and we had a party on a boat on Lake Travis in Austin in July to celebrate. The absolutely fabulous Wookiee on the front is by Will Kier, one of the artists on the project at launch.

Fun little piece of the game's history, and I doubt there are many copies left in existence!

If I find anything else particularly fun I'll share it. Cheers!

Discussion SWG Restoration is absolutely amazing right now

Hey all! I’m not affiliated with Resto, but I did make a character there a few weeks ago. They just had a big update that brought DX12 support this weekend. I just have to say - if you are looking for something close to what pre-CU SWG was in the early days, this week is probably it! A lot of new players are starting because of the update and Mos Eisley is absolutely packed full of players. The GCW is hot, Kashyyk got a revamp so vets are there in full force. The bazaar is full of items. It’s just like I got to spend a day back in 2003. Just wanted to share!

Promo I loved Star Wars Galaxies so much that I'm building my own MMO inspired by it — would you play something like this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SWG was one of the games that shaped me. The sandbox, the player-run economy, crafting that actually mattered, building your own home and city — nothing has really filled that gap for me since.

So I decided to build my own: EVOX Galaxy. It's an original universe (not Star Wars), but the heart of it is inspired by what made SWG special.

A lot of those old systems haven't aged well, so I'm rebuilding them for today. In the clip: you deploy your house by throwing a capsule (it lands, unpacks and builds itself in seconds), a look inside, and the shuttle that brings new players to the outpost.

It's still early and very much a work in progress, but I'd love honest feedback:

Is this something you'd want to play? And what did you love most about SWG?

Also, the combat is shooter-style now: you aim yourself, but your skills still matter a lot (a swordsman with a rifle will have more sway, recoil and slower reloads). Would you like to see how it plays in the next post?

---Below you will find background information on known criminals, various organizations, species and other individuals tracked by CorSec Intelligence. This information is to be used to assist with your investigations and reporting, under no circumstances is this information to be transmitted to unauthorized personnel.---

Aakuan

Aakuan

These anarchists believe that all living beings have the right to govern themselves and that no authority (specifically, no government) should invade anyone's individual space. Believers in personal freedom, pacifists unless provoked, the Aakuan are dangerous only to those who invade their territories. However, they're easily agitated and consider anyone walking near their territories to be invading.

Their doctrines, though extreme, find many followers on fiercely independent Corellia. Aakuans take their name from the old Corellian term aa'kua, "respect" (literally "respecting space").

Afarathu

Afarathu

Afarathu are separatist Selonians, and hate all other species. They would especially like to drive the Drall and the Humans from what they consider to be their home worlds (including Corellia and Talus). See Selonians.

Alkhara Bandits

Alkhara Bandits

Alkhara was a notorious bandit who roamed the Tatooine wastes using the B'omarr palace as his base for thirty-four years; he shared the palace with the remaining B'omarr monks while he ravaged unwary moisture farmers.

He allied his band of thieves with the Sand People long enough to use their strength and ferocity to wipe out a police garrison. He then killed all of the Sand People that had helped him. It was this cruel act that created the feud between Sand People and humans, a feud which continued for centuries after Alkhara's death. When the Sand People sought to exact revenge on him, he fled deep into to the B'omarr palace.

The current incarnation of the Alkhara bandits was formed under a new leadership by several Tatooinians who had been forced from their home by Sand People. They wage a constant war with the Tusken Raiders, and pillage local villages and moisture farms for supplies.

Beldonna's League

Beldonna's League

These mercenaries are led by Liiria Beldonna. They are soft and complacent, working for the Imperials and willingly accept bribes to let criminal activities go unchecked. Sometimes these mercenaries help keep the peace, but they always act at the bidding of their current employer, even if they have violent aim.

Binayre Pirates

Binayre Pirates

They are a two-bit group of smugglers and pirates operating in the Corellian sector who have twin home bases -- one on Talus, the other on Tralus. They cling to the bottom rung of the criminal ladder.

Black Sun

Black Sun

This massive criminal organization was founded millennia before the onset of the New Order. Black Sun is led by an Under-lord who is advised by host lieutenants known as "vigos". Widespread agents of Black Sun floundered until a young Falleen named Xizor took control. Prince Xizor eliminated any serious threats to his rule, and then established himself as Black Sun's most proficient leader.

By the era of the Galactic Civil War, Black Sun was a vast empire with a multitude of interests and operations. The primary source of income for Black Sun at this time was the sale of information, and Xizor worked hard to make sure he was in control of information that his customers wanted. Xizor also had several front agencies, such as Xizor Transport Systems, that he used to launder credits.

Blood Razors

Blood Razors

This swoop gang originated on the planet Biivren. Despite their fearsome name, the Blood Razors were formed to assist those inhabitants who were outcast when the big corporations took over the planet. They mostly traffic black market goods to the underground, avoiding Imperial notice by covering their activities with swoop chases.

Borvo the Hutt

Borvo the Hutt

Borvo is a blue-ish skinned Hutt looking to carve a small Empire out of the Naboo system. Has worked with, for, and against Jabba, but holds no special grudge or respect for him.

Canyon Corsair

Canyon Corsair

Canyon Corsairs consider themselves above average vehicle pilots, including swoops, land speeders, and star ships. They spend most of their time working on their vehicles or stealing parts for them. They will occasionally steal other things to sell for the money to buy parts for their vehicles.

Chunkers

Chunkers

Chunkers are a strange group of junk pirates. They steal all their weapons and equipment from trash, or things people have "chunked" away. They spend time looking through abandoned camps and junk piles for anything "new".

Cobral

Cobral

The Cobral family was a group of smugglers and black market dealers who took over the planetary government of a planet called Frego. They ruled the planet quite well for some time until one of the children of the family had his brother killed to ensure his place as head of the family. The Cobral family lost their power and authority shortly before the Battle of Naboo, but some members of the organization fled to Rori. Not long after, the two brothers who committed the murder (among other crimes) were sent to prison.

The Cobral now are the remnants of their regimes who are trying desperately to get their leaders out of prison.

Cor-Sec

Cor-Sec

Correllian Security Forces (Our Organization). Police for the Corellian Sector of the Galaxy, including Talus.

Dantari

Dantari

The primitive Dantari roam in tribes across the surface of Dantooine. The natives of Dantooine build primitive mud huts and cave shelters decorated with icons of ancestral spirits. Because Dantari tribes are nomadic, they desert and re-occupy whole villages seemingly at random.

Little is known of the primitive Dantari culture.

Dim U

Dim U

The Dim-U is a group of monks who worship the Bantha because it is the single most adaptable and simple creature in the universe. Dim-U followers believe that the Bantha has a hidden message from the creator of the universe.

Drall

Drall

One of the three main species of sentient creatures living on Corellia along with Humans and Selonians, the Drall are a species of people native to the planet Drall in the Corellian system. Though they are generally reclusive and peaceful, some Drall visit or live on Corellia, and some have shown hostility towards native Corellians. See also, Selonians.

Feddub

Feddub

The Federation of Double Worlds (or Fed-Dub for short) is the government that controls Talus and Tralus. Members are elected, and they control a minor force to keep the peace on these two planets.

Followers of Nyax

Followers of Nyax

Lord Nyax is an ancient Corellian Ghost whose name was invoked to scare children. When Darth Vader came to Corellia to destroy the Jedi, this was the name he was given by terrified citizens. Nyax's followers hate Jedi and all they stand for, and look to slaughter them as Lord Nyax did when he possessed the body of Darth Vader. The followers aren't particularly Imperially oriented, but believe Vader to have been inhabited by Nyax's ghost, and so treat him somewhat reverentially.

Garyn Raiders

Garyn Raiders

Ex-vigos of Alexi Garyn who managed (through luck and coincidence) to avoid Darth Maul's destruction of Garyn's organization. They are fiercely loyal to their leader, who was drowned by Darth Maul. They have since banded together on Rori to base their operations to harass Imperial troops and avenge their fallen leader.

Gungan

Gungan

In the past, Gungans took great pains to avoid contact with their Naboo neighbors, and even built huge underwater cities to escape contact. Since the failed invasion by the Trade Federation, the Gungans have begun to co-exist with their human friends. A few stubborn holdouts remain on both sides.

The most notable holdouts to the peace are the Rorian Gungans.

The "Rorian Gungans" are a group of gungans that relocated to Rori shortly after the peace brokered between Boss Nass and Queen Amidala as a result of the Battle of Naboo. Rorian Gungans were violently opposed to any alliance between humans and Gungans. Living in relative isolation on Rori, they have become territorial, paranoid, and increasingly violent. They are now likely to attack any beings who come into their territory on sight.

Discussion How did I get dragged back into swg AGAIN??

Let’s talk about gaming in general. If you’re a person who enjoys games, I’d venture to say you don’t only enjoy one.

When the newest season of whatever Blizzard is pumping out for WoW comes out, I don’t see it as fragmenting this community, even though the Venn diagram of enjoyers overlaps. When Valheim 1.0 came out, I didn’t get up in arms in their reviews saying they were fragmenting the gaming community because I was going to go play through it with some buddies who also play SWG.

New ideas, continued development, and the die-hard ambition to create the exact version of SWG that you enjoy while also putting in the effort so others can take part is exactly what has kept this game alive.

If a vanilla 1.0 server came out tomorrow it wouldn't maintain decent population for any period of time simply because this community has taken the game so incredibly far development wise. That’s a testament not only to how good the skeleton is but to the dedication of its playerbase. I don’t go back and play vanilla Skyrim. I spend 5 hours finding mods, realize I fucked up my install, then go play something else.

If we’d simply left it at 1.0 and all played on the same server, hard stuck in time, we’d have put in our hours, explored the content we wanted, and quit when it went stale, just like every other game in existence.

Every time a new server opens, the narrative that it’s somehow “stealing” members from an already small community has become the default take. The reality is new servers are a big part of what’s responsible for keeping this community alive.

I’m only speaking for myself. I love the game, but I don’t play on any of the main 3-4 servers. When a new server I’m interested in opens, it brings me right back. I’m a net add when there are new servers and new ideas to check out. There’s no fracturing when it comes to me, and I doubt I’m the only one.

I tend to play SWG for a few months every couple of years. When I saw the ideas feeding the new Uprising server, and that it was brand new (I really don’t enjoy the ghost town feeling of 10-year-old servers-- I like the new, scrappy feeling of starting fresh), it sucked me right back in. Same thing for Attack of the Clones a little while back, and Sentinels Republic (the first one, I think?). Strong recommend Uprising to anyone who loves the game but especially those masochistic enough to love PvP in this 20-year-old game.

I have a ton of appreciation for everyone who’s put in the work to develop a server or just helped out by playing on a small one and building a community. It takes a crazy amount of time, energy and patience to stand up a server like this and build a community people actually want to be a part of. And every single time someone does it the same comments show up. It splits the playerbase, why not just play on X, it’ll be dead in 3 months. Same takes, different thread. Not every new server is going to be good and that’s fine. People figure that out by trying them, not by dunking on them before they even launch. I get that population matters, especially for PvP, but piling on someone who cared enough about this game to put their own spin on it isn’t protecting the community. It just makes sure nobody new wants to try. Every staple server you play on today started out as somebody’s “unnecessary” new server.

So maybe next time a new server pops up that actually interests you, go give it a shot and add to the community instead of tearing down the people putting their free time into building it. Worst case, you lose a weekend. Best case, you find your next home.

---------------
TLDR- New servers bring people like me back and breathe new life/ideas into this game. I’m a net add and I doubt I’m the only one. Don’t let your only contribution to this community be naysaying people passionate enough to spend their free time building sandboxes for the rest of us.

Discussion Pudu Furmunda (Jeff Butler) of Lowca - The Fourth Jedi Initiate of Star Wars Galaxies

Post image
84 Upvotes

The official Fourth Jedi Initiate in Star Wars Galaxies, was none other than Sigil Games Online Vice President/President, Jeff Butler. Between 1999 and 2001, Mr. Butler worked on EverQuest for SOE, becoming the EQ Lead GM before moving into a key development role for the early EverQuest expansions. In 2001, Jeff Butler left SOE alongside EverQuest creator Brad McQuaid (RIP).

In 2002, Butler and McQuaid formed Sigil Games Online, quickly beginning development on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Mr. Butler took on the role of Executive Producer and was instrumental in Vanguard's creation.

Somehow, he still found time to become the Fourth Jedi Initiate. In Mr. Butler's own words: "The starting point of the road to unlocking my Force-sensitive (Jedi) character slot was something that I gathered in discussions with beta players and friends within the industry. Yes, I had a bit of insider info... My knowledge wasn't complete, but I was pretty certain that the key was mastering a substantial (six-plus) number of specific professions that were unique to each character and randomly set upon character creation." This direct quote shows that Mr. Butler was vastly ahead of other players when it came to knowing how to unlock their Force-Sensitive Character Slot (FSCS). Was this fair? That is up to you to decide.

Mr. Butler began his Star Wars Galaxies journey on the Lowca server alongside his wife and friends from Sigil and SOE. His character's name was Pudu Furmunda (a play on the Huttese word "poodoo"). He played as a jack-of-all-trades who kept enough skill points free to easily master and drop professions as needed. He joined a small but active guild called <RCR> (River City Ramblers), whom he credits with helping him achieve his legendary Jedi status.

Both he and Brad McQuaid eventually returned to SOE after Sigil Games Online was bought by them. Both took on critical roles in EverQuest and in overseeing other SOE properties.

Currently, Mr. Butler is still active in the gaming industry and posts rather regularly on X (formerly Twitter).

Discussion Star Wars Galaxies Friday Feature – Music Makers - 06/29/2007

Music for Budding Performers

Musicians learning their way around an instrument begin with a selection of wind instruments.

Novice entertainers get started with a slitherhorn, a long instrument with a distinct tone. The light and airy melodies created by this simple instrument are sure to get any listener's foot tapping. Beginning musicians often pick this as their instrument of choice.

Droopy McCool of the Max Rebo band is a master of the horns, and the slitherhorn is one of his favorite instruments for his regular gig at Jabba's Palace.

The fizzz, an uncomplicated wooden wind instrument similar to the slitherhorn, is also called the Dorenian Beshniquel. With a deeper tone than the slitherhorn, musicians looking to add some warmth to their music will enjoy the sounds of the fizzz.

The Bith musician Doikk Na'ts of the galaxy-famous Modal Nodes band is a master of the fizzz.

The velvety, mellow sounds of the fanfar are a favorite of cantina patrons across the galaxy. A long reed instrument similar to the slitherhorn and fizzz, the fanfar is another great instrument for the budding musician, who can begin to play it at level 7. The slots lining the top of the fanfar are known as farra slots.

Ickabel of the Modal Nodes is known for playing the fanfar.

The kloo horn is a double-reeded instrument that musicians can play when they reach level 14. This instrument, larger than the slitherhorn, has a distinctive curve in the reed and produces a richer sound than the slitherhorn and fizzz.

Figrin D'an is widely regarded as one of the best kloo horn players in the galaxy, and can usually be found in the Mos Eisley cantina with his band, the Modal Nodes

The metallic traz is picked up by capable entertainers at level 26. The deep sounds produced by this reed instrument charm listeners in cantinas and theaters on every planet. Musicians who love the sweet sound of the slitherhorn often enjoy the similar tones produced by the traz.

Intermediate Instruments

Once a musician begins to mature, the entertainer gradually adds other instruments to their repertoire.

The mandoviol is a stringed instrument that dexterous musicians strum to produce a variety of sounds. Melodies reverberate across the cantina as the rockin' mandoviol belts out a tune. Musicians gain the skill to play this instrument at level 38.

The bandfill is a complex instrument that cannot be placed in a single category. Part percussion and part horn, gifted entertainers learn the ins and outs of this instrument at level 50. The horn bells and beats of the bandfill are a welcome addition to any ensemble.

Nalan Cheel of the Modal Nodes plays the bandfill with flair.

The chidinkalu horn is the longest wind instrument at the entertainer's disposal and produces the richest sound. Entertainers begin honing their skills with this instrument at level 62. The harmonious melody of this instrument rounds out the horn section of any band.

Melody Masters

High level entertainers tackle three challenging instruments on their path to become true masters of music.

Only a talented entertainer that has reached level 74 can sit in front of this complex instrument and deftly use the pedals to create just the right sound.

A reception dish on the ommni box enhances surrounding melodies in the mix, creating a unique harmony pleasing to the listener's ear.

Tech M'or of the Modal Nodes is a galaxy-famous ommni box player.

The nalargon is a large instrument that puts the entire body of the entertainer to the test. Adeptly juggling the keyboard of the nalargon is a true test of the expert entertainer's skills. This instrument produces an assortment of sounds and always draws a crowd eager to see a good show.

Max Rebo can often be found behind the keys of his nalargon in Jabba's Palace.

A difficult instrument that only true masters of music can play, the xantha is a combination of a wind instrument and a guitar that generates a variety of sounds.

It takes the concentration and effort of a true music master to pluck the strings at the base while using the mouthpiece in harmony

Discussion Orions- of Bloodfin - The Third Jedi Initiate of Star Wars Galaxies

Post image
63 Upvotes

Orions- (forum name) was the official Third Jedi Initiate in Star Wars Galaxies. Orions- hailed from the Bloodfin galaxy. They unlocked their FSCS on November 8, 2003, the day after Monika (Akinom) T'sarn of Intrepid became the First Jedi Initiate. Their unlock happened in the morning, shortly after Zina (of Naritus), the Second Jedi Initiate, obtained their FSCS.

Orions- posted to the SWG forums a couple hours later, revealing their profession path, along with other information they thought relevant. They mastered nine professions total, using only two holocrons.

Orions- was part of the Rebel PA Fight. This guild was quite notable in the early days of SWG on the Bloodfin server.

If anyone knew Orions-, please share as much information as you can.

Promo SWG Elder Haven Opens Its Doors!

SWG Elder Haven (formerly SWG Nicklanth) is now live in alpha!

Hey everyone! I posted about the server a month ago, when it wasn't quite ready to play. Now that it's open, I wanted to give you guys an update and explain a bit more about what the server is all about as well as make a more detailed post than last time.

Elder Haven is a pre-cu server inspired by Morrowind and other classic RPGs, focusing on character progression and faction questlines that matter and give you extra content for doing them.

  • Insight & Prestige: Start with low stats, earn Insight levels through gameplay, and spend your choices to increase Health, Action, or Mind. You can also gain new prestige cycles, accumulating additional stat choices along the way. Currently, there are 5 Prestige levels available.
  • Smuggler's Life: You can become lord/lady of the underworld and unlock repeatable interplanetary spice runs, with betrayals from the buyers/sellers and ambushes along the way.
  • Mandalorian Questline: Become a Mandalorian leader and unlock micro missiles and shields powered by their own fuel system. You also get to lead mandalorians and send them to different type of missions for loot, credits, etc.
  • Adaptive Weapons: Weapons that level up and grow stronger with you. They also drop adaptive fragments that weaponsmiths can use to craft even stronger weapons.
  • Grandmaster System: Reach Master in a profession, then advance to Grandmaster to increase your skill cap. Repeat the process to eventually master as many professions as you want. Becoming a Jedi, however, means giving up those benefits, as they have their own progression.

More systems and content will be added throughout alpha.

Discord: https://discord.gg/v53rthpHxU

Website & how to connect: https://swg-elderhaven.github.io/

Everything currently runs server-side, so you only need a compatible Pre-CU client. No custom launcher or client modifications required for the time being, but after the alpha it will use as that, as many of the current systems would benefit from that.
