Something Iāve noticed about Avatar fandom discussions is that whenever relationships come up, the conversation almost immediately turns into shipping.
And donāt get me wrong, I like shipping too. But ATLA was never primarily a romance story. Its structure feels much closer to a shonen adventure, where friendship, family, mentorship and found family are just as important, if not more important, than romance. Avatar has SO many incredible relationships that barely get discussed anymore because everything eventually gets filtered through a shipping lens.
Zuko and Iroh are probably the biggest example. Their relationship is one of the emotional backbones of ATLA. Iroh wasnāt just Zukoās uncle, he became his mentor, parental figure and arguably the most important person in his life. Without Iroh, I honestly donāt think we get the redemption arc we got. Their reunion still makes me emotional every time.
Then thereās Aang and Zuko. Their friendship becomes incredibly symbolic by the end. The Avatar and the Fire Lord becoming genuine friends after a century of war represents the possibility of the world finally healing. Not to mention how Aang saved him from freezing to death even though he was still his enemy at the time or their Parallels in The Awakening and their Dragon Dance⦠Tbh the Firebending Master is another great Episode in Zukoās redemption arc, but gets overshadowed by the Southern Raiders. But I love seeing that bond continued into adulthood, with Zuko dropping everything to be there for Aang and becoming one of his strongest defenders.
Katara and Toph are another dynamic I wish people talked about more. They clash because theyāre complete opposites, but thatās what makes their friendship interesting. In The Runaway, Toph basically admits that even though Katara annoys her, she appreciates how much she cares about her. Katara also learns to meet Toph halfway instead of constantly trying to control her.
LOK has this too. Korra and Tenzinās relationship is one of my favorites in the franchise. They frustrate each other constantly, but over time they become incredibly important to each other. Korra learns to trust him as a mentor, while Tenzin learns that guiding her also means letting her become her own kind of Avatar.
Even Korra and Toph deserve more love. Their time together is short, but Toph helps Korra stop running from what happened to her and start confronting the trauma she has been carrying. Special Mention of the Cloud Siblings and them reconnecting and walking together.
And now Seven Havens continues that focus beyond romance. Pavi and Nishaās relationship as sisters is obviously central, but we also have Jae becoming something like an older brother and Karthik becoming more than just a mentor, almost filling a father figure role. Those relationships give the girls support, protection and a sense of family while theyāre being thrown into an increasingly dangerous world.
Thatās something I really love about Avatar.
Romance matters, but it has never been the only form of love that matters.
Sometimes the relationship that changes a characterās entire life is their uncle, mentor, sibling, best friend or someone who simply becomes family.
I just wish fandom discussions gave those relationships the same energy we give ships, because some of the most emotionally important relationships in this franchise were never romantic at all.
