Mod Post AA:TLA Movie Spoiler Period is Over + Rule Reminder / Tweak
Hey folks.
I) Spoilers
- The new animated film, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (AA:TLA) , has been officially available for more than two months now. As such you no longer need to spoiler mark posts about the film.
- Still don't go out of your way to spoil someone who has expressed they are new to Avatar or haven't seen the film yet. Especially in threads using the post flair "Original Series Only".
II) r/ATLA sub focus
- This subreddit is specifically focused on ATLA, not Avatar in general. So that means our topic is the original cartoon, ATLA comics, Netflix ATLA, the movie, and other stuff starring Aang and in his era.
- But NOT: Legend of Korra , various books set pre-ATLA, fan projects about some ancient/future avatar, or the new show Avatar Seven Havens. Do not post your reviews or thoughts or news on Seven Havens here, it will be removed.
- That said we do allow "crossover posts" (for lack of a better term). As in comparisons between Aang and Korra, discussions of how the ATLA characters were used in LoK, or art where Aang fights Amon.
III) Tweak/Clarification
- Some "crossover posts" have gotten some reports/complaints. In particular stuff that is mostly about something non-ATLA or looks at various parts of the universe, but something ATLA is mentioned in passing or makes up a small piece of the whole picture.
- Because of this I want to be clear moving forward. Posts have to be more significantly ATLA - specific. That all posts must in some way genuinely be focused on /about: "ATLA" or "ATLA and X" not "Avatar/X including ATLA". Or otherwise clearly aiming to spark discussion about ATLA.
IV) Other Subs
If your post isn't about ATLA you may want to consider the below subreddits.
- r/TheLastAirbender - Main sub for the whole franchise / universe
- r/AvatarSevenHavens - The specific spot for the new show.
- r/legendofkorra - Like us but for everything LoK.
- r/Avatar_Kyoshi- A sub for the novels, their protagonists, and more broadly a look at the lore/universe with an emphasis on written works which don't fall neatly within the banner of a show or movie.
- r/ATLAtv - Narrowly focused on Netflix's ATLA

Mod Post "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" - Spoiler Discussion Thread Spoiler
FULL SPOILERS (for this movie) allowed in this thread (and only this thread for today and at least part of the weekend). As a reminder, spoilers outside this thread must be marked until two months after the film's release and no spoilers in the title of posts.
- Additionally keep in mind that not all users here are caught up on every avatar comic/book , let alone news or leaks for Seven Havens. So please keep discussion focused on the movie itself, and if you mention other stuff for comparison/reference, please mark major spoilers.
////
With all of that out of the way... "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" (AATLA) is a feature length animated film, the first from Avatar Studios. The story is set around twelve years after the original cartoon.

Question Fanfiction
Hey, I have a question. Do you read fanfiction featuring characters from ATLA?
If yes ships:
- between characters
- with OC x character (e.g. Katara)
- reader X character
Do you have any favorite fan fictions, and if so, which ones? I'd love to read them.

Discussion The Gaangs Teamwork needs to be discussed more! Their unity was insane!!

The teamwork of the Gaang needs to be discussed more… their unity was perfect!
Like, everyone knew exactly what to do without even needing to communicate much. Their teamwork was incredible, and Aang was absolutely goated in this scene!
I could rewatch this moment over and over again and never get tired of it.
Zuko was out of his mind for sending that literal death machine after the Gaang. Like, wth?! They accepted him into the group way too quickly considering what he put them through.

Discussion Where is the front line on a map?
So, it just seems like the firenation is able to pop up wherever they want to pop up, with basically no resistance. For example, the drill just shows up at ba sing se. how did it get there? That giant, slow, machine wouldve in reality probably been stopped long before it reached ba sing se’s borders.
The show does establish that the earth kingdom is still in this fight with the firenation. With earth kingdom forces patrolling (like when Iroh was captured) and soldiers coming back from the front (like when that one earth kingdom general tried to bait the avatar state out of Aang)
The earth kingdom definitely had its forces, strongholds, and fortresses. So where exactly is this front line? The firenation just seems to be able to pop up and invade whatever they want with seemingly no resistance up until they make it to the city they are trying to invade. While in a real conflict defenses are posted up at the border and not just at cities.

wholesome Iroh opens up to Toph - my new one-shot fanfic
The morning sun cast long, amber bars across the polished wooden floor of the tea shop. The rush hadn’t started yet, and the air smelled faintly of toasted chestnut and morning mist.
Toph was sitting at her usual corner table, systematically breaking down a stubborn wooden lockbox Iroh had picked up at a Ba Sing Se night market. With a sharp click-whir, the internal tumblers shifted, and the lid sprang open.
"Too easy, Uncle," she muttered, tossing the brass mechanism onto the table. She tilted her head, listening to the quiet shuffle of cloth and the familiar, measured cadence of Iroh’s footsteps. He wasn't carrying a tray of tea; instead, he carried a heavy, somber silence.
Iroh set a single plate of steamed dumplings down, then sat on the bench opposite her. He looked out the open window toward the bustling street, his gaze distant, lost in a memory that stretched far beyond the walls of the outer ring.
"You've been quiet all morning, Uncle," Toph said, her sharp ears catching the slight hitch in his breathing—the subtle rhythm of a man carrying a regret too large for his chest. "And when you get that quiet, it usually means your brain is stuck somewhere in the Fire Nation."
Iroh let out a slow, heavy sigh, pulling a warm cup of jasmine tea closer to his hands.
"You have a remarkable way of looking straight through me, Toph," he murmured, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. "Yes... my mind has wandered home. Or rather, to the people I left behind there."
Toph crossed her arms, leaning back slightly. She didn't interrupt. She knew better than anyone what it felt like to be shaped by a toxic home, and she knew the weight of the names Zuko and Azula hung over the royal family like a permanent storm cloud.
"Zuko found his way," Iroh began, his voice soft and trembling with a quiet pride. "It was a brutal, agonizing path, and I failed him at every turn when he needed me most, but he found his light. He learned to listen to the voice inside his own heart, rather than the phantom of his father's expectations."
He paused, his fingers tracing the rim of his porcelain cup. The silence stretched, heavy and thick.
"But Azula..." Iroh's voice cracked, dropping to a whisper so frail it barely carried across the table. "Azula haunts me, Toph."
Toph uncrossed her arms, her head tilting sharply. "Azula? You mean the sparky-sparky royal pain who tried to burn us all alive?"
"She was a child," Iroh said, his eyes unspeakably sad. "And I was so entirely blind to it. When Lu Ten died, my world ended. I turned inward, nursing my own grief, and I looked away from the palace. I saw Zuko’s struggles because he wore his pain on his sleeve, crying out for a love he couldn't earn. But Azula... Azula learned early on that weakness was a death sentence in Ozai's house."
He shook his head, staring down into the dark amber liquid of his tea.
"She was a prodigy, yes. But she was a little girl who only acted out because she thought perfection was the only currency that could buy her father's affection. She built her armor out of cruelty because she was terrified that if she wasn't useful, she wouldn't exist. She truly believed her own mother didn't love her... and the tragedy of it is, I watched her sink deeper and deeper into that madness, and I did nothing. I treated her like a lost cause before she even had a chance to be saved."
Toph listened in absolute silence. She didn't offer a flippant joke or a sarcastic remark. Through the vibrations of the floor, she felt the deep, agonizing seismic tremors of Iroh’s guilt—a mountain crumbling from the inside out.
"I gave Zuko my attention because he was broken in a way I understood," Iroh continued, a tear finally slipping down his cheek to splash into his cup. "But Azula was broken in the dark, where nobody was looking. And now she is alone in a cage, entirely consumed by the very fire she was forced to weaponize. I failed her, Toph. Just as much as her father did, by omission."
The tea shop was entirely still. The ambient sounds of Ba Sing Se felt miles away.
Toph reached out blindly across the table, her hand finding Iroh’s trembling wrist. Her grip was firm, grounded, and unyielding—a literal anchor keeping him from drifting away into his own past.
"Hey," Toph said, her voice lacking its usual sharp edge, carrying instead a fierce, quiet wisdom. "Stop beating yourself up, Uncle. You can't carry everyone's weight, or your back's gonna snap."
Iroh offered a bitter, self-deprecating smile, looking down at her small hand. "It is a heavy thing, knowing you missed a child crying out in the dark."
"Yeah, well, welcome to the club," Toph replied softly, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "Look at me. My parents thought I was a fragile, helpless little glass doll who couldn't survive outside a guarded cage. Do you think they ever really saw me? No. They saw a liability. And for a long time, I hated them for it. I thought I had to be the toughest, meanest thing in the world so nobody could ever hurt me again."
She squeezed his wrist a little tighter.
"Azula built a fortress out of lightning and cruelty because she was terrified of being weak," Toph continued, her blind eyes fixed dead-on into his soul. "She was just like me, Uncle. Only, nobody ever pulled her out of the dirt. Nobody ever sat her down and told her she didn't have to be a weapon to be loved."
Iroh looked up, his breath catching.
"You spent all this time blaming yourself for not saving her," Toph said gently, echoing the profound truth she had given him back when they first met on the road. "You think you failed because you were blind to her pain. But maybe... maybe you need to realize something else, Uncle."
"What is that, Toph?" he whispered.
"You can't fix what happened back then, and you can't force a locked door open from the outside," Toph said, her voice carrying the absolute certainty of an earthbender standing on bedrock. "Zuko reached out because he wanted to change. Azula... she has to want it too, eventually. But until then, you can't punish yourself for not being a miracle worker. You gave me a home when I had nothing. You taught me how to lay my pack down. That matters."
She gave his wrist one final, solid pat before pulling her hand back to take a sip of her own tea.
"Besides," she added, a sudden, characteristic spark of mischief returning to her tone, "if Azula ever does show up here demanding a rematch, don't worry. I'll sweep the floor with her. Literally. I've been working on a new metal-hinge trapdoor behind the counter."
A choked, watery laugh broke out of Iroh's chest. The heavy, suffocating cloud in the room seemed to fracture, letting the golden morning light break through. He reached across the table, pulling her into a brief, fierce, one-armed side-hug that Toph didn't even try to push away.
"Thank you, Toph," Iroh whispered, his voice thick with a profound, healing peace.
"Yeah, yeah," Toph grinned, leaning comfortably against his side. "Just make sure the next batch of tea doesn't taste like swamp water, or I'm demoting you to dishwasher."

Cosplay How did we do? Happy (early) Halloween!
My wife crafted both costumes from scratch (with the exception of Katara's water pouch and her boots). She also did my bald cap and makeup.
I've wanted to be Aang since I was in middle-school/high-school. Some 20 years ago. I turned my wife into a fan during the pandemic. I've been trying to convince her of dressing up as Aang and Katara since. And after the new movie came out she said we could pull it off for Halloween this year.
A bit or a dream come true for me. Ngl.
