Mod Topics Mod Topics : Inactivity, 2FA, and YOU

Hi there! OpusCroakus here! Guess what I want to talk about?? If you guessed account security, you’re kinda right! I do want to talk about keeping things secure, like your mod teams, for example!

If you’ve been hanging around here for a while, you’ve likely seen posts from mods reporting that their account has been hacked! And then the hacked account has gone on to vandalize the sub and the mod team. =/ That’s no good.

And while some users might not see the need for 2fa or a passkey (which are available for all accounts now!), if you’re a mod, you should see the need for additional security measures. You not only want your account to be secure, but you want your co-mods’ accounts to be secure as well.

This is where I segue into inactive mods on your mod team. An inactive moderator account without additional security measures is just as ripe for hacking as a user who isn’t mod. How often do you check in with everyone on your team? Do you ever remove mods that are inactive, and if so, what period of inactivity is required before they are removed? What about banned mods? When do you remove those from your mod team?

Finally, have you ever had a discussion with your team about 2fa and/or passkeys? Do you require them for moderators in your communities? What is your approach to proper security for your mod team? We want to hear it!

PS It wouldn’t be a post from me without a reminder to enable 2fa or a passkey on your account. Consider this my reminder! =) 2fa can be enabled from the desktop site and there are instructions here. Passkeys can be enabled from anywhere! Instructions for that are here.

Mod Notes are so specific, why can't we create custom types yet?

So in my sub we have basically stopped or not even started really with using mod notes because they are so limited from the types. Spam notes? Those are awfully specific. We need "Keep an eye on this user", "Was banned before but has been unbanned now", "Uses strong language but doesn't mean it bad", which fall under none of those types that can't be changed. I'd love to have a way of creating custom ones or at least get more broader options. They could be used very well but currently they are too limited to actually be.

ModTeam comment removed by Reddit

• Upvotes

This is a rather unusual one.

2 days ago there was a post containing a photo and personal details about someone, asking if anyone had any more information about the person. Moderators removed it under Rule 3 as doxxing with a ModTeam comment to this effect. (EDIT for clarification, Comment as Mod Team, i.e. user subredditname-ModTeam)

24 hours later, a different account posted exactly the same thing. Identical post with the same photo. This was also removed under Rule 3 with a ModTeam comment. That ModTeam comment was reported as spam but the report was dismissed, flagged as report abuse and the comment approved. A bit over 2 hours ago, that ModTeam comment was removed by Reddit.

Is there a way to get this reviewed as a false positive or community interference?

How to bulk-remove approved users?

I have a somewhat unique case.

Previous mod team approved thousands of users and I would like to remove their approved status.

I've already manually removed a couple thousand at least, but there are still so many.

Is there any way to do it all at once?

The reason I would like to do this is the sub was seemingly being used to run scam/spam stuff and I just want to start over without that influence.

Thanks in advance.

How to prevent previously removed posts from reappearing due to Reddit's unbanall service?

When a brand new account is shadowbanned, its posts (comments or submissions) do not appear in a sub. If, later, Reddit's unbanall service decides that to overturn the shadowban, the posts appear on the sub, bypassing AutoModerator's filters.

Invariably, these posts are spam or low effort. I have yet to see a unbanall-restored account post anything of value in any of the subs I moderate. (In the latest case, a 1-hour-old account from India posted "CQ PASS 3" in a 2-month old thread. AutoModerator blocked it, but then unbanall approved it.)

Presently, these posts are only caught if the moderator happens to see them or a reader reports them.

I respect Reddit's decision to remove a shadowban. I just don't want their posts to appear unfiltered in our subs.

Is there a way to block such posts from appearing in a sub? Or, at least, to notify the moderators so the posts can be removed? Some way to trigger AutoModerator?

Admin Replied Control of mod list

Hello, the senior mods in my subreddit are having a problem. It seems we have no authority to grant alumni or advisor mod roles to the last half of the mod list. Also we are unable to reorder the mod list. Can anyone help?

Admin Replied Unable to edit removed posts.

Hi,

Over on [r/Assistance](r/Assistance) we remove posts for a lot of reasons with a request for OPs to edit their post to edit or remove the relevant content so we can reapprove it.

For example if someone posts personal information like a phone number, cashapp tag, or a PayPal email.

Or they are missing information needed to help them get the assistance they need.

We only allow text posts on [r/Assistance](r/Assistance) so it is not an issue of it being a link or image post causing it to be uneditable.

Recently we have noticed a steep increase of people replying to these modmails stating the “edit post body” option is not available.

After some testing we have determined, at least for mobile users, this happens when a post is removed.

This is causing a lot of extra headache and work for our team to try and navigate.

“Why can’t they just make a new post?”

Because we have extensive scripts which prevent people from reposting too soon on [r/Assistance](r/Assistance). It’s just the way our subreddit works and changing it would again lead to extra headaches and work for our team to be manually checking every post to make sure it’s been 72 hours since their last.

Removed post and comments by Reddit?

I can see in my insights that posts and comments have been removed but have no record of what those are. I assume it was spam or something that was removed by Redditt. Can I not see what they were because I'm on mobile? Is there a way to see what they were? Thanks

Subreddit insights

Hey, at the start of every calendar year, one of my larger subs does a big community report where we talk about the past year. what went well, what didnt, rules changes, mod team changes, trends we've noticed, etc. sort of a summary from the mods. In previous years there was also the Reddit Wrapped every user got but last year it didnt happen. In our community report we were still able to show our growth, our biggest posts etc.

I'm curious if we'll be doing a reddit wrapped this year or if its not coming back. I'm also curious if we could get better/more insights than the current subreddit insights tool provides, like maybe letting us see stats from further back than 1 year so we can better compare year over year, or other stats that aren't surfaced already. For example we created a post flair for the World Cup and I'd love to know how many posts used that.

Can I delete my sub's lounge?

I just took over a dead sub as co-mod and I don't think the lounge makes sense to keep. Can I disable it or delete it in mod tools?

Can I moderate both SFW and NSFW subreddits at the same time?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding Reddit's moderation rules. Is it allowed to be a moderator of both SFW and NSFW subreddits at the same time?

Are there any Reddit rules or restrictions against moderating both types of communities, or is it completely fine as long as I follow the Moderator Code of Conduct and Reddit's Content Policy?

I'd appreciate any clarification or advice. Thanks in advance!

Modqueue Nuke not working

Hi, I'm experiencing an issue where the Modqueue Nuke feature isn't working for me. I need to bulk remove over 400 reported items, which include both posts and comments. These reports span a mix of active and ignored reports, with some going back 4 to 5 years. Unfortunately, the nuke option fails to clear them. Is anyone else experiencing this, or is there a known solution?

Editable post flairs

Is there a reason why editable post flairs can only be edited after the post is live and not before?

Serial spammers, vote manipulators, and ban evaders: all of our reporting does nothing.

This has been an ongoing issue for months now. We have reported these accounts, their domain, and their obvious manipulation, but the admins aren't doing anything about it. What does is take to get the admins to actually do something about it?

Option for a mod to download all wiki pages

Is there any way for a moderator to download an entire wiki (as a ZIP archive?) so it can be edited locally? A stretch goal would be an upload button on each page, but I'd settle for just the download!

Albeit Reddit's markdown has a few quirks, I have successfully manually brought down some pages and run them in a local wiki app to make cross-referencing, global search and replace and generating an index easier, but doing it this way is very tedious.

Thanks.

Too many requests while sorting the mod queue?

Is anyone else having trouble with 'rate limitation' while you're trying to sort the mod queue? I got this message I've never seen before that says "Too many requests Your request has been rate limited, please take a break for a couple minutes and try again." and it won't go away, so just wondering if others have seen it or just me? (I wasn't going particularly fast, by the way!)

Admin Replied Modmail Automator is_moderator test fails

Not sure this is the right place but after a recent update to Modmail Automator (v1.10.3 to v1.11.0), all our rules fail to trigger due to the is_moderator test in the rules.

For example, this rule:

body: ['!welcome']
author:
    is_moderator: true
    ~name: ['modmail-userinfo']
reply: |
    Hello.

With verbose_lon on, we get:

Modmail Automator logs
Priority: 0
Rule matched: false
Body matched successfully. ["!welcome"]
Moderator check failed, skipping rule.

Anyone also seeing this?

Moderator unable to submit a Ban Appeal

Hi all,

A moderator who belonged to a community that I am apart of had notified me that he had been banned. He followed the instructions in the email to attempt to submit a ban appeal and also tried going to https://www.reddit.com/appeal where he personally is getting a generated message that is telling him to look in his inbox on where to appeal - essentially putting him in an endless loop. I personally tried to see if I can visibly see the appeal section, I can, but obviously I am not the one who is banned.

Is there any advice anyone can give on how he can properly submit an appeal? He isn't able to get to any form when he's logged into his banned account.

How to add emojis to flairs?

I see a lot of subreddits with emojis in their flairs, but when I try I'm blocked. It says to go to Look and Feel > Emojis, but I can't find look and feel anywhere

I'm on mobile if that's relevant

Hello ModSupport Team,

Hello Reddit Admins,

My subreddit r/LiudyPoruch was banned, but I haven't received any explanation. Could you please tell me the reason for the ban and review the decision if it was a mistake?

Thank you.
