Weekly Cyclist Thread
The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

New-to-me 2004 Lemond Tourmalet Triple (mint condition)
Edit: first pic is after I stripped down the frame. 2nd pic is in a *mostly original state from purchase
I saw this on Facebook marketplace for a great price and impulsively bought it as fast as I could. Upon arriving, the seller told me the story of how she bought it new in 2004 to do a cross-country ride with friends. After this ride, she decided cycling wasn’t for her, and it sat in the garage ever since. The frame and all components are basically mint condition, and for this reason I felt the need to pay the full $300 listing price instead of the $250 we negotiated down to.
As it sat in my room while I was at work, I thought about what I’m going to do with this bike. Eventually, I decided to do a full rebuild upgrade to it: modern 105 drivetrain, bb, new hub/wheels, new bars, basically new everything. I bought the wheels, hub, bars and shifters, the derailleurs and crankset are takeoffs from my retired 2020 orbea avant and new soloist.
I’m extremely hyped to do this build.
More about the bike. It’s 6066 aluminum, and VERY light weight. Lighter than my full carbon cervelo soloist. During my short test ride the night I bought it, it’s quick. Faster than I expected a bike this old to be. The frame leans towards an endurance fit (by 2004 standards) but as you can see, there is ALOT of room to lower that stem. I intent of leaving it high for now to maintain its endurance feel.

Litespeed Classic Worth It?
Hello, a seller on Facebook marketplace offered me this Litespeed Classic for $550 does anybody know if this would be worth it? I would like to bring it out to fast group rides and rep the old school bike lol

Cleaned up the dumpster find ‘95 Trek (after and before pix)
I raided my parts bin for wheels, tires, tubes, grips, a seat, and threw on some cheapo Walmart pedals. It rides beautifully so I’ll be taking it on a dirt road run in a couple of days. Still need to replace the recalled cranks (thanks Reddit peeps for alerting me to this issue)!

Opinions on this bike, please!
I'm looking for a second opinion on this bike. It looks a bit old school to me, and can't decide if that's in a good or bad way... I like that it comes with either mechanical 105 or Campagnolo Chorus and it's pretty light, which in itself is old school, and I think that might be influencing my opinion too much.

Power2max power meter crank replacement cover help
Hello all! I recently bought a TT bike on Facebook Marketplace with a power2max power meter crankset. The previous owner tried to replace the batteries and accidentally ripped off the battery cover.
I found a replacement cover for $10 on the manufacturer’s website, but comparing the damage with the replacement part, I’m not sure whether a new cover alone will fix it. I’m also concerned about what looks like a USB-C port that appears to be partially blocked by a torn piece of the cover.
Has anyone dealt with similar damage on one of these power meters? I’d appreciate any advice on whether the replacement cover would work or whether it needs a more involved repair.

Just want to confirm: Frame is cooked, correct? Snapped Dropout
Carbon fiber LIV frame, snapped rear dropout + hanger. She's garbage, right? No chance to fix, without extensive carbon surgery, etc.

Maxing out tire clearance on a Trek FX 2!
Hey everyone! I had a great debate about whether larger gravel tires would actually fit on a Trek FX 2 frame. Officially, the clearance is quite conservative, but I wanted to test the limits. Here is my current setup that actually works amazingly well:
Front: Teravail Rutland 700x47c (Fits with plenty of clearance on the fork!)
Rear: Maxxis Rambler 700x38c (Safe clearance near the chainstays and front derailleur)
If you're looking to turn your hybrid into a more capable gravel all-road machine, this staggered setup is a game-changer. Sharing in case anyone else was wondering if it's possible!

What size bike is this?
Apologies if this is a dumb question. I just restored this bike. It is a 2005 trek madone 5.2. on the dropouts it claims it is a 58cm frame. From crank to seat collar it measures as 56cm. Standing next to it/looking at it it seems to be smaller than that. I know I'm an idiot, but am I dumb for being confused by this thing?
Do not say a WORD about the pedals they are a placeholder

Diamondback Inspire 1 Worth Repairing?
I had this when I was a kid way back when, and was looking to maybe get back into riding it. I put many of miles on this thing, but due to life, It has sat in garage for the last 5 or so years. One of the spokes is broken on the rear wheel, and I suspect the wheel isn't exactly true. Everything else worked the last time I rode it (and popped a spoke jumping up a curb)
I was thinking about getting new wheels and tires for it, maybe something a little wider (700x40??) to ride down some abandoned rail "walking" paths the locals have carved out over the years, and the backroads between my house and town. I even thought about adding some drop bars and a better seat if it makes sense.
would it also worth finding a cheap bike? I am not sure if riding a bike is something I would do as a hobby, but as a cheap fun mode of transportation from place to place in town without taking my truck.
Thanks for the advice guys

Best repair for tubes
It’s made for car tyres but this is probably the biggest life saver, beats any other slime or bicycle tube sealant. For presta valves you do need to carry an adapter to shrader but works fine

My bike keeps making fart noises
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Pretty new, got it off Facebook marketplace for a really good deal. The Decathlon B'Twin bike. It just keeps making fart noises whenever I ride it. Don't mind how horrible I am its the first time of me ever riding it 😭 the lady said she got it November last year
I really wish I had taken a better recording but I had no where to place my keys and I'm too lazy and tired to go back down to my garage to take another. I have some sort of lube thing for it (???) But im pretty sure its for ebikes (from the last owner). It wont let me attach a photo here or in the comments of the lube crap or the bike itself do I make another post?
update: Im an idiot I pumped the baxk It doesnr fart anymore. Thanks guys 😭

Bike Bell (horn?) for Heaphone-Wearers Walking into Bike Path?
Hi everyone!
I'm posting because the 5 other threads I looked at had a lot of comments (that were usually hilarious) but that weren't really covering the situation I want something for
I don't want a device that's for the "hey I'm a bike passing you" for the common pedesterian
I want a device for the "hey this person is looking down at her phone with headphones on and stepped into the bike lane without looking up and we're about to collide" situation
Or the "Hey this oncoming person on an e-bike is looking down at their phone and has headphones on and they're drifting into my "lane" and I need to get their attention and shouting isn't working"
These aren't situations that are like "oh just go slower" (I'm already going slow in these situations, like ~5mph) or "I recommend you don't hit pedestrians" 🙄🙄 (obviously, duh, that's the priority)
It's the "almost collision" situations I'm looking for a sound device for that others have found to work well
Amendment: I'm looking for an additional sound I can use in supplement to my yelling
Yes I understand about evasive maneuvers? Duh? If I'm yelling, then I do have time to also simultaneously ring a bell, and that's the thing I'm asking about. 😑🫠
thank you!
(another amendment: removed my side question)

Is it normal to get super emotional after a car hits you?
Saturday I was riding to work, and a car didn't see me at the roundabout, until it was literally on me.
It is the second time the same scenario happens, and if it was not for the previous trauma I had, and the fact that I anticipated the scene and turned 90 deg when I completely understood the car was gonna hit me hard (it was a big Range Rover), I might have had it way worse, under the car, maybe dead. Not sure. My bike is completely broken and gone. But I got by without any bad injury, just my legs full of bruises and a bit of backpain.
After it happened I bursted in tears. Even if inside I almost fell "normal", my body response was so tragic and emotional.
I arrived at work, and when a colleague asked me "are you okay?" I bursted in tears again, it was such an emotional turmoil I couldn't handle it, which is not very typical of mine. The whole Saturday I felt somehow down, and yesterday I felt almost depressed, which is unusual. I was bed ridden, not even the energy to take a shower, or cook, barely eaten, and some intrusive thoughts. I called some friends to keep myself busy, but I can still feel this shit is affecting me.
I am wondering if other people experienced the same. I feel like others that went through this reacted way better, and I am not usually a dramatic person. So I somehow would like to know others experiences.
Ps: the woman that hit me was super nice. She hugged me and offered to bring me to work and buy me a bicycle whenever I feel ready to. She gave me her number and even sent me the pictures of the accident with her car+tag and my bike under it. So at least it was nice of her. And I can replace my shitty bike with something nicer. She was extra rich

What to do Specialized Hard Rock
I just picked this up today and it's going to be my transportation for a while. I live in sober living, and in a town that doesn't have good public transportation. What upgrades or changes do you recommend me making? This will mainly be a city bike. I would have got a hybrid or something else, but my budget sucks right now. It turns out unscrewing your life is expensive. Any advice is appreciated.

Looking to replace my car, need options
I have been toying with the idea of slowely replacing my vehical with a bicycle for several years now but am not sure where to start. My reasons are for financial, environmental as well as health. I plan to slowely replace my work commute and back and forths to the grocery store with a bike and eventually retier my vehical or keep it and only use in emergency situations. Does anyone have good bike recommendations for me?

Advice upgrade, tips workouts and essentials…
What's up, folks? I just bought my first road bike and wanted to ask a couple of questions. It's a 2016 Giant Defy 3 Aluxx. I'm pretty new to the sport, but I run I want to make sure I take proper care of my bike. What wanted to see which upgrades I could make or adjustments might be necessary and highly beneficial. It's a 9x2 Sora tips for gears how to use what combos to start with...
I'm pretty fit; however, what types of workouts can I do to increase my pedaling efficiency and build up to longer distances? What's an ideal weekly distance, and how should I increase my mileage?

Question about biking the suburbs at night
Howdy! I've recently gotten a new job around 5 miles away from where I live. It's very low-paying- it'd take a year of pay or more to buy a car, let alone maintain it - so I'm considering biking instead. However, my parents are very worried about the safety of it, especially since plenty of my shifts will be ending after dark.
I live in a fairly suburban area without sidewalks, a bit closer on the spectrum to rural than urban. They're fairly sheltered folk, so I'm taking their caution with a side of salt, but I want to make sure I keep safe. Aside from the obvious (front/tail lights, reflective gear, mirror for visibility, doing research on the specific route), what should I look out for when preparing? Is this even a good idea, or should I take their advice and just buy a car?
I'd appreciate any help or advice on the matter. Thank you!
EDIT: Thank you, everyone, for the help! But sadly, I can't exactly move forward with this. My father started screaming about how bad of an idea it is when I brought up being dropped off at the local bike shop, before threatening to not drive me to work. So, I don't believe I can pursue this right now for my own safety. Still, I greatly appreciate the help.
