Ask Pakistan Why Pakistanis are so obsessed with asking about martial status?

I moved out of Pakistan in 2017 and practiced as a doctor in the uk and some other European countries. Never in my entire professional life did my colleagues ask me if I was married or not, not especially in first interactions. It's been a year in my current workplace, and no one has ever asked me about my marital status or dating life. Only time I was asked about this out of Pakistan was when i met pakistani Dr's or pakistani origin patients during consultations.

Just after the first wave of covid, I moved back to pakistan to relax and not focus on work. Quickly got bored and thought I could find jobs in hospitals in my city just to kill sometime. Even in my interview, they asked me about my Marital Status and also lectured me about the importance of marriage.

On my first day at work, almost all of my colleagues asked me about my Marital Status, again got lectured by them about the importance of wedding.

After a few days, I assisted a surgeon, and he lectured me about benfits of marriage in the whole procedure, and it was my first case with him.

Why we don't have basic etiquette of not asking personal questions at least in very first meetings.

Discussion Is tipping culture getting out of hands in Pakistan?

We visited Pakistan few months ago and we took our families out for dinner. We reserved the place in advance and all was good. Bill was around 40K PKR and additionally, I think 8-10% services charges. Where we live everything is included in the cost and no tipping/service charges culture here.

We settled the bill and as we were about to leave, staff started asking for tip, my husband said we already paid and they said we didn't pay, my husband said we paid the service charges, they said that's not tip, that's service charges. My husband said, please explain the tipping then, isn't tip means appreciating the services, so what's the difference between tipping and service charges, then they said, Sir, wo tu management k liye hai, hamara tu alag hisab kitab hota hai. My husband said, go and fight with management. We already paid 4000 extra, what else are you expecting from us.

We had a good time in the restaurant but the ending left a bitter taste. What would you guys had done? It's not about being cheap, it's about there should be a limit? There was one person standing at the door, for opening/closing, expecting tip, there was a security guard, trying to open the car door, expecting tip. there was a gate keeper, saluting and expecting the tip.

I mean, where's the end? The experience was different for us. We also felt some judgement from the surroundings, it's like Pakistanis have accepted this culture and don't argue or fight back. If there were no service charges, we would had happily tipped but once service charges are included, then why tip?

Discussion unfair treatment at home

i will never understand why mothers of all people are so horrid to their daughters. most of us already have fathers who don’t care, brothers who are torture us and mothers who add their own abuse into the mix.

For context, i am 25 female. i have 4 brothers, 23, 20, 18 and 12. Right off the bat it’s an understatement to say my mom loves her sons, she WORSHIPS them. They treat her like crap and she still treats them like royalty. Me on the other hand, simply breathing gets on her nerves.

Firstly, i want to make it clear that i do everything for my mom. She knows my brothers will deny, so she doesn’t ask them for anything. Everything from inside the house and outside, i do it. And my brothers are praised for doing nothing. My mother swears at me, constantly, curses me, sexualises me in front of everyone (i dress modestly, i hate tight and revealing clothes) abuses me. My brothers and i used to be close but she’s ruined my relationship with them by abusing me so much that now my brothers do it too.

My father is good to my mother, he has loved her, given her everything he had, but she’s done nothing but abuse him. In this house, my father and i are the target of her abuse. Everyday she fights with my father and then straight away jumps onto me. My mother says very dirty things to me, wishes bad upon me, competes with me even though she’s the prettier one, she will not spare a moment where she won’t humiliate me and my looks. To her i’m a tool that just gets things done.

My mother has also isolated me from both her side of the family and my dad’s side through humiliation, lies and abuse. If my mom fights with my dad or a rare sight of her arguing with my brother, i am punished for it. She won’t allow me to eat afterwards even though the fight has nothing to do with me and isn’t even about me.

i am typing this right now, sitting on the staircase after my mother just fought with my dad and two of my brothers about literal car keys. They’re all eating dinner now and i’m sitting on the staircase while they eat. She does this all this time. No i do not work, because the job market is horrendous and i have been applying daily only to face rejections. Yes i have a degree in business and it’s not helping me. i’m unemployed, therefore i have no income, i rely on my father and even that has finished now because my mother does allow me ti ask my father for anything.

Discussion What is your backup plan if the undersea cables are severed?

Hey everyone!

As we all know, Iran said it might cut the underwater cables in the next round. So I wanted to ask how you all are preparing for that? To live these days you need information, and without the internet, there will be no information like we have now. I'm a total newbie to building an 'offline internet,' so that's why I thought to ask here and ask the pros.

I personally have downloaded a bunch of things like all of Wikipedia, MedlinePlus, wikiHow, Khan Academy videos, the Survivor Library, offline maps of Pakistan, and some other stuff (using Kiwix) that I'll need. I also got the Qwen 70B model up and running on my MacBook, and it's linked to all the data sources that I mentioned above, so I have my own online-like AI but working totally offline.

I do have a ton of smart home stuff, and thankfully all of it runs offline, and I have everything added in Home Assistant. So there hopefully won't be days where the lights aren't turning on just because there is no internet. I'm curious to know what you have set up and how you're gonna operate without the internet. I might have missed something really important.

To be fair, it's not really about if Iran cuts the cables or not, it's about preparing for the worst. Just today I asked this question to a few people and they were like, "Inshallah Iran won't cut them" or "Hopefully not all of our cables go through the strait"—stuff like that, which shows they are quite unserious. I think you should be prepared for the worst to some extent.

Your thoughts? And please correct me if I'm wrong.

Social House help deserves better

Domestic workers deserve better

I have seen a general trend of measly compensation being given to domestic workers in Pakistan. We all think inflation is hitting us hard - with all the resources we have been blessed with Alhamdu lillah, what about them?

The discrepancy between salaries of white collar workers, and domestic workers is astronomical in a lot of cases. We spend so much on luxuries / recreation, surely we can designate a small portion of that money to add to the salaries of our workers so that they have a relatively easier life.

You being generous towards them (or at least giving them what they rightfully deserve for the long hours they put in) will insha Allah benefit you as well as the benefits of being generous and helping the poor are well documented in Islam. I have witnessed this firsthand as well, Alhamdu lillah.

Discussion Will obsession with marriage ever go away?

Will the pakistani societal insane fixation on marriage ever go away?
- larka bara nahi ho raha, shadi karlo
- larki bari ho rahi hai, shadi karlo
- beta shadi nahi ki?
- shadi karado bus iski ab
- jaldi shadi karado time nikal jaega
- shadi karado theek hojaega
- shadi ke baad tou sab theek ho hi jate hain.

Like the obsession with marriage is insane in our society. It used to be toxic and insane in 1900s, it is toxic and insane even now. When will we get over this?

Ask Pakistan BMS for small-medium business

Thumbnail

A while ago, a relative asked me to build a POS-style business management system for their business. They needed the usual POS functionality, along with some additional features to manage day-to-day operations.
I built that application and handed it over. Later, I took the same codebase as a starting point and developed it into BMS — Business Management System.
The current version has 10 modules covering areas such as sales, inventory, purchases, customer credit, deliveries, expenses, employee management, and reporting.
A few things about BMS:

  • It works offline.
  • It's available for Android and Windows.
  • The core application is free.
  • It's designed to run on ordinary, low-end hardware.
  • It doesn't require an online account or recurring subscription to use the local application. The idea is to give small businesses a straightforward way to manage their operations without having to pay for expensive software or depend on an internet connection. I've attached screenshots from the actual application so you can see how it works. BMS website: https://bms.barqpash.com/ Feedback and suggestions are welcome, especially from people who run small businesses or work with business management software.

Discussion Why do Pakistani politicians treat rich people, celebrities, and foreigners better than ordinary citizens?

I noticed that whenever Pakistani politicians and ministers meet wealthy people, influential businessmen, celebrities, cricketers, or foreign visitors, they treat them with so much respect, hospitality, and VIP treatment.

But when it comes to ordinary Pakistani citizens, I often see politicians behaving arrogantly, dismissing people, or acting like they are above everyone else.

I live in Canada, and from what I have observed, politicians here generally seem more approachable and willing to interact with ordinary people. Of course Canadian politicians aren't perfect either but I feel there is a noticeable difference in political culture.

What bothers me is that politicians are supposed to serve ordinary citizens not just wealthy or influential people. A farmer, labourer, student, or shopkeeper deserves the same basic respect as a billionaire or celebrity.

Why does this double standard seem so common in Pakistan? Is it because of VIP culture, class differences, political connections, or a lack of accountability?

Has anyone personally experienced this behaviour from Pakistani politicians?

And for those who have lived abroad, have you noticed the same difference?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

Discussion How much would you realistically pay for a good-quality pair of jeans in Pakistan?

I’d really appreciate detailed answers. Please answer based on what you would actually spend, not what you think jeans should cost.

A little about how you shop:

  1. Where do you usually buy your jeans from? For example: Levi’s, Outfitters, Breakout, LAMA, Khushposh, local/unbranded stores, thrift stores, imported brands, etc.
  2. What is your usual budget for a pair of jeans? Basically, what price range are you normally comfortable shopping within?
  3. How much does quality/longevity affect what you’re willing to pay? For example, would you rather pay Rs. 8,000 for jeans that fit well, look good and stay wearable for years, or Rs. 4,000 for jeans that might lose their shape, fade badly, or become unwearable much sooner? Basically, do you believe in the "girl math" idea that an expensive item can actually be the better deal if you wear it a lot? Think cost per wear — something expensive that you wear 100 times could be better value than something cheap that you only wear 10 times.
  4. Are you male or female, and what problems do you usually face when buying jeans? Please be specific here. It could be length, waist-to-thigh proportions, inconsistent sizing, rise, fit, lack of certain styles/washes, poor fabric, jeans losing their shape, limited sizes, etc.

Now for the actual pricing questions.

Imagine you found a pair of jeans that you really liked in terms of design, fit and style, and they appeared to be genuinely good quality.

Q1 — Too expensive:
At what price would you think, "No, that's too expensive for a pair of jeans" and no longer consider buying them?

Q2 — Too cheap:
At what price would they become so cheap that you'd actually start questioning the quality? As in, "At this price, I doubt these are genuinely good jeans or will last very long."

Q3 — Expensive, but still worth considering:
At what price would you think, "That's expensive and right at the edge of what I'm willing to spend," but after thinking about it, you'd still buy them if you really liked them?

Q4 — Bargain:
At what price would you see them as a genuinely good deal for the quality — cheap enough that you'd think, "Yeah, that's a bargain"?

Would especially appreciate if you answer all four prices in PKR.

Education A working for students against child abuse

So earlier this year, there's a school in my neighborhood. I also get my matric done from that school and it's a horrible env their, sticks uses on every single mistake, teachers beat student as they were beating animals (that part is rare one), and that's not the end.... One teacher watch bad videos with students also named students after Jonny.... Etc Sooo after I done my matric and in college an organization start working their e.g: competitions, programs, and more physical activities... So they got to know everything about it and choose to take action, my younger brother who's still in that school (8th class)... He gathered testimonies and written statements. Once enough proofs gathered we went to the higher authority, they took our concerns seriously and immediately fired teacher that named students, warned every other teacher for not using sticks, fired principal too (principal is a friend of that teacher and also beat students and frequently says: "<school name> ne rkha hi humee Marne ke Liye hai') we're happy everything good not a single teacher can beat students but that's all lasted for just a week. After that week principal came back in school (safarish), we didn't took immediate actions we waited, after a month a principal beats student and locked the staff room with the student to beat him. So we got to work again and did a massive campaign against him. I posted a post here on reddit at that time and get contacted by a person who's willing to help me in any matter, they helped me contact with child abuse NGOs their lawyers are ready to handle it... But me myself fear going to court cuz of the Pakistan's judicial system and main problem is my exams... So what our team thought wait... If no one listened to us so we'll take them to court. I told everything to my father gave them copies of testimonies and videos, my father said wait and let me do my work, I was like okay do it... And after months waiting the principal changed and a new principal came who burned the sticks, gave sat holiday (ex-principal stopped it while the system allows it), did reforms on punishments. I may told it as it all happens in 1 week but this all took a year of struggle. But I'm not stopping here... We will end the child abuse from every school of Pakistan, and you yourself may do this the gov have laws on it, and no teacher have authority to slap a student.

Honourable mentions:

The organization: Islami Jamiat Talba

My younger sibling who get caught and on the principal's target.

A person who guarantee me the support of NGOs and media.

My father.

And my other friends.

Cultural Made a Flag for Punjab need suggestions

Post image
6 Upvotes

The motifs are from a Khes design. The background colour seemed more reasonable and makes it look majestic, no other reason than that. I was going to use green bg (as yk fertile land stuff). Five Motifs symbolise five rivers, and obviously a River at the bottom; too many of these zigzag lines might've made this flag look over filled. Any suggestions? Though it is complete it still feels off, I really am not satisfied with my own design.

Discussion Has dating and hookup culture become normalized in Pakistan? And is it harder to find someone with no past?

I've been wondering about something lately, and I'd like to hear what people think.

Is it just me, or has dating and relationship culture become increasingly common in Pakistan, especially in big cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad?

Pakistan is a Muslim-majority country, and while I know that not everyone practises their religion the same way, I feel like relationships outside marriage, and perhaps even hookup culture, have become much more normalized over the past 2–3 years. It seems like almost everyone has an ex, has dated someone, or has some kind of relationship history.

There's another aspect I've been thinking about. For someone who has never been in a relationship and wants a life partner who hasn't either, does that preference make things significantly harder today? Are people who choose to abstain from relationships until marriage becoming a minority, particularly in urban Pakistan?

I'd genuinely like to hear people's experiences and perspectives. I'm not looking to shame anyone for their past or start a religious debate. I'm interested in understanding how dating culture has changed in Pakistan and whether those of us who choose a different path will find it increasingly difficult to find a compatible partner.
