Hiii! I'm trying to figure out what's best for my younger brother, who's currently in 8th grade, and I'd really appreciate advice from people who've faced a similar dilemma.
My main goal is to help him come out of his shy bubble, become more confident, improve his social skills, and develop his own personality. I also want him to grow beyond the typical pendu mindset and the social conditioning that's so normalised around us. Ideally, I'd like him to study in a co-ed environment so he can become more comfortable interacting with girls naturally, too.
My parents don't plan on moving abroad, and honestly, neither does he. They want to settle in Pakistan. Lekin as his older sibling, I want him to have opportunities I never had and to be prepared for different situations in life.
He's currently enrolled in another private school that seems good on paper, but the academic workload is affecting his health. He also hasn't really been able to fit in socially. The environment feels quite restrictive, and I feel like a lot of the kids don't get much room to develop their own identities or personalities.
Now, here's where I'm confused.
We currently live in Sargodha, and our first option is ABICS. It's close to home, seems safe, and they've recently introduced a new O Levels batch. The fee is around Rs. 20,000 per month, excluding examination fees, which we're comfortable paying.
The problem is that we're tentatively planning to move to Islamabad in around two years. I've looked into Cambridge-affiliated schools there, and many of the options seem to be outside our budget. If we enrol him in O Levels here, we might have to stay in Sargodha for the next five years to avoid disrupting his education, and honestly, staying here that long isn't ideal for our family.
So now I'm torn between two options:
- Switch him from Sargodha Board to Federal Board at ABICS, which would give us more flexibility to move to Islamabad in a couple of years.
- Commit to O Levels in Sargodha and potentially delay our move for the next five years to give him what I think might be a better educational and social environment.
I'm not necessarily looking for the most prestigious option. I care more about his confidence, personality development, social exposure, mental and physical well-being, and future opportunities.
For those who've studied under both systems, have children in either system, or have made a similar decision for their siblings:
- Is O Levels genuinely worth the extra commitment, or can a good Federal Board school offer similar opportunities?
- How much difference does the school environment actually make in terms of confidence, communication skills, and personality development?
- Would switching boards or schools again in two years be a significant problem?
- If you were making this decision for your own child, which option would you choose and why?
I'd especially appreciate advice from people familiar with the education scene in Pakistan, particularly Sargodha and Islamabad. Please share your honest experiences, not just the usual "O Levels is better" or "Matric is better" arguments.
Thank you!
