Politics Green party cold call - how did they get my number?

A few days ago I got a call on my mobile from someone claiming to be a volunteer for the Green party - the number came up as a landline in Waiouru. Besides already knowing my name, they only asked a couple of fairly innocuous questions - what issues are important to me, have I decided who I'm voting for, etc.

I didn't think to ask until after the call ended - how did they get my phone number? The Electoral Commission says they don't give out phone numbers or email address to parties or candidates, and I'm generally pretty careful about posting personal information anywhere.

*edit - Turns out I signed a petition 5 years ago that I forgot about. Mystery solved.

Discussion Green stone

Kia ora,

This is my first ever reddit post and I am looking for some advice!

I am australian (20 F) and I have recently visited Bali. While at my villa I found a greenstone necklace in the drawer of my bedside table. I asked my best friend who is from New Zealand and she told me to bring it home because it would probably be safer in my care. I am originally Irish and have 0 lineage to your beautiful country.

I was wondering if anyone on here could help me out with what I should do with it (just to preface, I have not put it on out of respect).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated:)

Thank you for your time

I recognise the other flags used in the film from, but not this one.

I know hand prints are popular among the Ringatu/Tuhoe so I kind of thought it was just a Tuhoe thing but idk.

Never seen anything similar before, not in old paintings or photos or in the modern day.

Discussion The weather on News sites

I have just noticed the neither Stuff nor 1news have a weather section. Rnz does but only New Zealand weather is mentioned. I have also noticed that on the tv news not much world weather is covered. (Exception being the Nepal flash flood). Significant weather events have been taking place, such as two 'triple' hurricane events in the north east pacific, floods in Africa, typhoons affecting japan and east Asia - caused by the el niño which has been dubbed Godzilla by other news agencies such as the BBC. This weather pattern is going to have some long term effects and I would have considered it newsworthy. Come on media, you can do better. (Our pollies should be thinking strategies also.)

Shitpost Another Trademe Rant...

Looking for a new car and have found a few I like on Trade Me Motors, but no one seems to want people to come and have a look at their cars! What’s the damn point of selling a car on Trade Me if you’re not going to let potential buyers inspect it?

Where else do people look for cars these days? Surely there’s got to be a better option!

Politics Opportunity

There’s a lot of scaremongering about opportunity in the Facebook comments from boomers (only boomers comment on Facebook). The left say that opportunity will go with national and the right say they will go with labour. In my opinion I think they should and will go with the Labour Party as the aspirational goals of a land tax and UBI are fundamentally different from the national parties “no new taxes” mantra. In addition the only way I see that the government can be changed is through the election of the opportunity party.

I’m tired of both labour and national and their attitudes to a new party. I watched Erica Stanford and her smug attitude to them on Duncan Garners podcast and was extremely put off. It seems our election has now gone down to schoolyard bullying tactics. The confidence and arrogance of both labour and national is unfathomable to me given how unpopular they are as reflected by the polls. In particular the overconfidence of Luxon given his recent train wreck interview where he was schooled on his own policy by a university student that was more articulate than him. How can national be so confident when they tried to oust their troubled leader three times and failed. Remember this is the lowest these parties have polled since the National party was formed in the 30s.

I also do not agree with the right discrediting Chloe swarbrick as inequipped to be finance minister because of her qualifications being some university papers in economics. What about Nicola Willis and her background in English literature and being a lobbyist?

David Seymour also had a mind numbing argument about TOPs apparent contradiction regarding electoral donations, despite receiving electoral donations themselves. Clearly electoral donations donations are unfair given the ACT party received millions in donations far more than any party including TOP.

Please share your thoughts respectfully.

What problem does this actually solve? “Privacy conscious” indeed, it’s literally storing kids bowel movements in a database next to a photo of their face

Politics Are we on the ‘fast track’ to becoming America?

I am sure there are a ton more examples and it needs to be noted Labour is still kinda limp on anti corruption laws.

Clear lobbying, such as:
- Cozying up to Ciggie companies - Cheers National
- Sacrificing ecosystems for mining for political backers - Cheers NZF

Privatisation
- Intentional Push Towards user pays healthcare - Thanks National and co.
- Charter schools - Cheers Act

Pandering to bunny boilers
- Abortion and gender bullshit - Cheers NZF

Selling of media companies to billionaires
- Newstalk ZB is full Fox now. TPU want us to sell rnz.

Excessive use of Fast Tracking
- Thanks a lot NACTNZ

Big money donors
- There are promises behind Acts fundraising.

Honestly I think New Zealand First is a massive issue, Shane Jones in particular. But the Fast Tracking law is what gets me.

The more I look at it the more we seem to be striving to be USA. And honestly I thought we’d be better than this.

I’m personally (obviously) left aligned, without an adult in Greens since Shaw left I’m no longer a fan.

Am I stupid for thinking that NACT are getting in and throwing my vote at top? I feel like the best play is watering down NZFs influence but honestly they seem kinda weak. Any one else voting primarily against a party?

Discussion I find it kinda cool how Australia and NZ culture is very similar to the UK. Apart from what I mentioned what are other simularities vs differences? Also correct me if I got anything wrong

Similarities

  • all countries english is based on british english (all countries say words like ''holiday'' ''holidaymaker'' ''fortnight'' ''mate'' ''bloody'' etc)
  • fish n chips
  • going to the pub
  • drive on the left side of the road
  • use some swearwords in a similar way for example 'cunt'
  • boxing day and easter monday

Differences

  • different hemisphere
  • speed limits in kph
  • people in australia and new zealand weighs themselves in kg now whilst uk still uses both kg and stone n pounds
  • people in australia and new zealand use some words brits dont use like ''dunny'' for toilet and brits use some words aussies and kiwis dont use like ''fag'' for cigarette.
  • bonfire night and bank holidays only in uk

Other R/NZ vs OTHER COUNTRIES MAIN SUBS

Hi people of r/nz Have you ever checked out r/Australia or r/Unitedkingdom? They seem to be mostly non-partisan national subreddits. Mainly news and interesting/funny things happening. There is very little self posts on politics and tales of woe about how politicians ruined your life. Could the Aotearoa New Zealand subreddit be like that one day? Or is this it forever?

Discussion Is this road markings new legislation?

Thumbnail

Hey nz, I’m a relatively new driver here. So this might either be a really dumb question. But was just wondering if these road markings are new legislation or something? I have never seen a give way intersection like this before. And why didn’t they just connect that center line with what appears to be the lane divider? Why did they mark it to the center? Is this something like you can go here but you also need to check? Someone please elaborate. Thanks in advance

Discussion Anyone ever benefited from Variety or Kidscan sponsorship as a child?

Just curious if there are any anecdotes of people who had been sponsored as a child and how much it might have helped them. I intend to sponsor a kiwi child and I’m trying to gauge impact beyond the charity adverts online.

Update: Thanks everyone for your input! I have now sponsored a Variety child. If anyone else is thinking about it, I also got notified upon sign up that you get 33% back in tax credits. So all up it’s quite cheap to make a small difference in a local child’s life. $600 a year but you get $198 back so only costs you $402 a year which is about $15 a fortnight. You can also optionally send extra for birthday and Christmas presents and can send messages to the child which they can reply to. Wholesome thing to do if you earn a decent wage and don’t have kids of your own (my situation!)
