Report recommends permanent hourly Te Huia upgrade with brand-new Hamilton central city station
Paywalled. For a bypass, use https://smry.ai/https://www.waikatotimes.co.nz/nz-news/361102049/report-recommends-permanent-hourly-te-huia-upgrade-brand-new-hamilton-central-city-station
Looks like there might be potential for continued service regardless of which bloc gets in, in a few weeks.

Hamilton people, would you use a map to find garage sales?
I see cardboard GARAGE SALE signs all over Hamilton on weekends. I've missed quite a few because I couldn't read the signs in time, and sometimes I drive to a sale without really knowing what I'll find there.
It got me thinking that it'd be handy to have a map showing garage sales around Hamilton, with some information about what's being sold before heading out.
So I've started building HopSale: https://hopsale.co.nz
Just to be upfront, there are no real listings on the site yet. Any listings marked SAMPLE are just examples. It's still early days, and I'm posting here because I'd like to get some local feedback before taking it further.
Browsing and listing a sale are free, although adding a listing currently requires signing in with Google.
Would you use something like this? And if you were organising a garage sale, what would make you list it on a website like this instead of just putting signs on the road or posting on Facebook?
I'm genuinely interested in honest opinions, including reasons why you wouldn't use it.

Resident house repairs
We're the new homeowners.
Recently we discovered some cracks along the joints of the fiber cement weatherboard panels. We would like to repair them professionally.
Can you recommend some company who does small repairs for resident houses in Hamilton?

[Waikato River] Huge congratulations to the brave boaties who targeted a 4yo child at Day’s Park today
EDIT / UPDATE:
First of all, thank you all so much for reading, sharing in my anger, and offering such warm support and helpful advice. I am doing everything in my power to track this vessel down and ensure this asshole faces full legal accountability for what he did to my boy.
To clarify any confusion regarding the timestamp: This incident happened on Saturday, 24th October. I originally posted this on r/newzealand right after it occurred, but the post was removed by moderators who advised me to repost here on r/thetron instead. Because of the delay in reposting, the wording "today" was carried over from yesterday's draft.
Also, I apologize for the AI tone. I know some of you dislike AI-generated posts. As a non-native English speaker, I used AI assistance simply to make sure I conveyed the accurate facts and context clearly during a very stressful time. But seriously, why would I make something like this up? If you were a parent and something like this happened to your small, precious child, I don't think anyone would blame you for using every tool available—AI or anything else.
For those who don't believe this happened, here is a photo taken at Day’s Park sandbar right before this asshole almost caused a life-threatening accident. As you can imagine, I couldn't take any pictures after that happened as I was focusing entirely on checking my boy.
Thank you again to everyone in the community helping to keep our river safe!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,
Posting here in hopes that someone might have seen this or has dashcam/CCTV footage around the river today on 24th October.
At around 4:45 PM on Saturday, 24th October at Day's Park sandbar (Chartwell), my 4-year-old boy was playing safely in knee-deep water right at the edge of the riverbank.
Out of nowhere, a white motorboat/jetboat came charging in dangerously close—literally 1 METER from where my little boy was standing. They executed a sharp drift/turn right in front of him and deliberately sprayed a massive wall of water, mud, and sand straight into his face. ON PURPOSE.
There was a shirtless white guy on the bow of the boat, LAUGHING his head off.
Big congratulations to you guys! Hope blasting mud and sharp rocks directly at a 4-year-old baby really made your day.Must feel like absolute heroes, right? What a truly impressive, high-class hobby you’ve got—picking on defenseless toddlers 1 meter from the shore while laughing about it. Truly inspiring stuff.
The force of the wave completely knocked my boy over onto sharp stones and sand. He sustained cuts and scratches all over his face, was completely soaked, and left absolutely terrified. Thanks to you, my poor boy was left with sand completely filling his ears, mouth, and hair—it took forever just to wash it all out. The boat immediately sped off heading South towards Town.
Does it make you feel like a big man spraying rocks and mud at a tiny baby while laughing? You are absolute losers, bottom-feeders, and cowards. Everyone using this river deserves to know who you pathetic scumbags are.
We’ve already lodged official reports with Police and the Harbourmaster to review CCTV around boat ramps like Pukete:
- NZ Police Report Ref:
OR-2957630N - Waikato Harbourmaster Ref:
SRC0494330
If anyone was near Day's Park, River Road, or any boat ramps around 4:45 PM today and saw this white boat or its tow vehicle, please contact NZ Police on 105 quoting reference OR-2957630N, or report it directly to the Waikato Harbourmaster.
Please stay safe out there, and let's keep the river safe for our kids. Thanks heaps.

Te Rapa Road Intersection (and my basic Roundabout Proposal)
Kia ora koutou, the following is my proposal for a Vic' Street-like renovation of the Te Rapa Road - Vardon Road Intersection I recently made and presented to my Engineering class.
Any Questions you have, I'm happy to answer.

Main Changes:
- Widened Cyclist-Pedestrian Footpaths which can be decreased to add extra lanes
- Added a crossing to Te Rapa Road (Left)
- Medians and Crossings Circumventing the Roundabout, they are all Cyclist-Pedestrian friendly except Garnet Avenue Roundabout Entry and Exit as it is too thin and therefore dangerous
- Central Roundabout Island with Curtaining (Road-level Curb) to give Buses and Heavy Vehicles more space
- Additional Trees, Fauna and overall Greenery
Miscellaneous Changes:
- 2 Accessibility Parking Spaces, 2 Cyclist-Pedestrian Crossings, 1 dedicated Pedestrian crossing (Carpark), and a dedicated Bus Stop Lane on Garnet Avenue (Bottom Left)
- Dedicated Crossing and additional parking for Te Rapa Road Service Lane (Left)
- Dedicated Bus Stop for Te Rapa Road (Left)
- Slip-lane (priority to Cyclists and Pedestrians crossing) for cars entering Te Rapa Road from the Catholic Church (Top Left)
- Dedicated U-Turn Lane for Te Rapa Road (Top Left)
- Reversed Church Carpark movement direction and Angled Parking (Top)
- 1 Cyclist-Pedestrian Crossing, 1 Dedicated Pedestrian Crossing and a Median Right Turn / Loading Zone on Vardon Road (Top Right)
- Median Parking for Te Rapa Road (Bottom Right)
- 2 Pedestrian Crossings for Te Rapa Road (Bottom Right)
- Gave the Shopping Centre Service Lane directional arrows (Bottom Right)
- Cars entering / leaving the Service Lane can use the Te Rapa Median as a Roundabout (to and from the far lane)
If you are interested in this proposal or you haven't got a reply (because I am still an Engineering Student) you can contact me by my Personal Email:

Does anyone know a good place to repair Xbox Controllers?
So basically, I have this Xbox One Controller that has pretty bad stick drift. I wanted to get it replaced at this one place, but they quoted nearly the same as buying a new one, which feels kinda wasteful. If anyone knows a place that can repair it, trade-in or just give it in for refurbishing so I can get a new one, would be much appreciated!

METEOR CARPARK SECRETS
I've been extremely curious over the years as to what sits behind this green retaining wall. It looks like a plywood shutter. I've heard stories of a tunnel connecting to the police station or the court house but nothing certain. Does anyone know?

Builder's report recommendations
Can anyone recommend a builder for a building inspection in Huntly for a first home buyer? No idea who to call or what green/red flags to look for on a builder's website!
I'm looking for a nitpicky inspector who will try find a reason to chicken out on my home ownership dream :') JK, but I would like to go in with my eyes wide open to the realities of the house. I'm on a pretty small single income to be buying a house and don't want to get completely fucked by something that was a problem pre-purchase.
If you've had a good (or bad!) experience with someone can you drop their name please? Not just in the Huntly area but someone local to Hamilton area.
Cheers team :D
