META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Sawyers Arm Road Tree?

Post image

Does anyone know the history of this awesome tree in Sawyers Arm Road? I had to do a U turn when I saw it - excellent work by council arborists, shaping the tree around the power wires instead of lopping it off...

Why does the council plan roadworks that close roads such that their detours are also under traffic management?

With Malcolm Ave being closed, I decided to go via Centaurus, which has stop go lights at the moment which would have been a useful detour. This isn't the first time I've seen this in Christchurch either, is there really that much road works happening that they have to do this?

Who is everyone’s preferred Ilam electorate candidate?

Greetings,

I'm reasonably new to the area. Wondering which left of center candidate people are voting for in Ilam? I am aware it is traditionally a strong National seat, so which of either Labour's Rata Jamieson or the Green's Mike Davidson is in a realistic position to challenge for the seat? And would left voters all get behind either/or to increase that candidates chances of beating the incumbent?
Cheers

Was out with a friend yesterday when she got a phone call from a volunteer from the Green Party. Wondering how common it is.

Has anyone seen this on the shelf recently? Been looking everywhere and just can't find it.

It's still on the Watties website so guessing it's not discontinued?

Thanks all.

Hidden dinner gems under $20pp

Heading into Christchurch(CBD) tonight for a highschool prizegiving, trying to think of something more exciting than the standard takeaway options for an early dinner to celebrate an amazing year, but can't justify over around $20pp. Any ideas for someone that doesn't delve into the city too much (doesn't have to be the CBD but coming from from North Canterbury so would rather that side of town). The award winner is vegetarian so better keep her happy too.

Was too late checking the likes of first table/bookme

Tidal View - is it a one way street?

I’ve started going to Anytime Fitness and I can’t figure out if Tidal View is a one way street or not.
Both street ends have an entrance/exit but the street seems very narrow for 2 cars.

I got an odd look using the street when leaving the gym. I think I’m in the wrong and maybe have missed some signs saying it’s a one way street….

Christmas in CHCH - lunch / dinner recommendations please

Gidday People of Christchurch, We (wife, 14yo son & I) are doing a quick holiday lap of the south over xmas & new year, and will be in your lovely city on Christmas day.

I'd love some recommendations of places for a wonderful Christmas lunch or dinner ?

Not essential as he doesnt always get his own way, but as with many 14yo boys, he does love a good buffet. All suggestions appreciated - any cuisines, any budget - where would you take your family for Christmas lunch/dinner ??

Tru Gym

Has anyone been to the new women’s only gym that’s just opened in Cranford St?
I’m interested in joining but their social media seems only to feature hot insta gym girlies, which is definitely not the look I bring to the gym.

The gym itself looks pretty nice and the people running it seem friendly, but I don’t really want to workout around people who are taking ass photos in the mirrors.

Don't bring your pungent weed on busses please for the love of god.

I don't care what you do in your spare time just don't make it my problem, if you're bringing your stinky ass weed on public transport, keep it in an airtight container. I just got off a bus where the smell was so strong it filled the whole bus and was so bad I actually threw up as I was getting off it. I've smoked it enough to green out before and it didn't smell that strong even then. I'm not talking about a hint of it on your clothing, that I don't mind, just don't want to still smell it half an hour later. Thank you.

Christchurch dating pool grim?

Is it just me or do any other humans feel like the dating pool in Chch is pretty grim right now? Like why is it so hard to connect with someone in their mid-late thirties that isn’t a bogan, pleb or broke?

Employers to avoid? (in hospitality industry)

Hello guys! I have been changing jobs a few times after leaving the job that I worked for so long because I needed a change. However, I haven’t had much luck with employers and so it would be nice to know which one to avoid to save my time and mental. (For your own legal safety, please avoid mentioning the full names, just a hint of the area or first letter would be ok).
Please feel free to also share any good workplaces! Lets focus on positivity too. Thank you in advance.

Little Port Cooper access

I'm heading to Camp Bay tomorrow and keen to walk out to Little Port Cooper (and return the same day). I'm wondering what the deal is with access at present? I know there is an AirBnB out there, but can't ascertain whether the public can access the bay as a daytrip. Info online appears to be quite outdated, so I'm hoping for some up to date intel! TIA

Social Looking for tutors! Y12 NCEA STEM

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am a current Y12 student(m) at Burnside High, living in the Fendalton area, looking for math/physics/chem tutors to help me revise before externals start in early November. I have a pretty solid grip on the foundations for all 3 subjects, but my math knowledge is a little shaky for the algebra/calculus externals coming up, and my physics is much of the same.

Would appreciate any help finding anyone available, my parents seem to prefer private over company tutoring. In-person or online is fine, although of course in person seems to be better.

Cheers! :D

Politics My experience voting in chch today

Advance voting is open now. I noticed one of the shops near my local Bunnings was set up as a polling station, so figured why not exercise my democratic rights before grabbing some timber for my fence? It's pretty convenient that I didn't even need to look for somewhere to vote.

It was quick and easy, took about 15 minutes in total including some time waiting in a queue. Showed the worker my easy vote email and it was a straightforward process from there. No worrying about IDs or other stuff. Ticked two circles and dropped a form in a box. Done.

A couple things: I'm glad we have elections that are relatively easy and safe to participate in. They could always be better, of course, and recent changes to late enrollment are problematic.

Also, I was in the queue with and briefly spoke to a group of 4 young people casting what was for most of them their first votes in an election - it was nice to see the next generation getting involved and being excited about democracy, especially when there's a pervasive narrative about youth disengagement that usually just blames them for being apathetic.

I'm not sure what way this election is going to go. It's tightly contested and there are several variables that could swing things one way or another. But make the most of your chance to be part of the decision that will shape our country for the next 3 years.
