Recommendation
Hi. I am a software developer looking to finally get into the Apple side of things.
I wanted to know what would be a better device for me. I do occasional AI stuff, but most of the stuff would be object oriented programming, and application/web development.
Is the M5 MBA ok do those all these things, or do I have to necessarily get the pro? Even an older gen could be recommended.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Letters I key in keep becoming lowercase on Safari
For example, while I wanted to type “JPMorgan”, it automatically became “jpMorgan”
It still persists even though I turned off Auto-Capitalization
What should I do please?

Pro14 vs air15 16 vs 24gb ram
Hello!
Im looking to buy a MacBook. My use case Will be work and studying that consists of browsing, typing and minor ai stuff. Also a bit of media consumption. So very light work i guess, but with alot of tabs open. I live in Sweden
What im considering (all m5):
MacBook Pro 14”. 16gb ram 1TB on sale for $2300
MacBook Pro 14”. 24gb ram 1TB for $2850
MacBook Air 15”. 24gb ram 512gb for $2150
Im not sure What would suit me best. I have looked on both models at a store and like them both.
Im afraid with the air model that im not gonna stand only 60hz (i have an oled panel 280hz for my pc)
And im afraid thar 16gb ram would not last 5 + years.
Any advice?

Looking at an Apple laptop
I’m looking at buying an Apple laptop for work, documents, working from home / not in the office, video calls, research, videos, lectures, emails etc. I might end up caving and putting a couple of games on there too, but not the main aim here.
Haven’t had a laptop (it was non-Apple) for over 15yrs, and simply doing uni work it sometimes sounded like it was a plane taking off (the fan).
I can’t afford the 16” MacBook Pro, so not even entertaining that. But tossing up between the 15” Air (where recently I’ve read it can heat up, slowing it down, might need cooling pads) and the 14” MacBook (including new M6).
How loud is the fan? I’m guessing much quieter than my previous experience? Would it bother people around me, eg someone next to me in a library?
I know I should look for myself, and I’ll get there, but is there that much difference in size between the two? “Ugh, about an inch.” Yeah, I know. But is it noticeable? Cause there’s not much weight difference either.
Any other thoughts? (I think base 14” has better resolution, battery and 1TB, but Air was cheaper and bigger screen. Anything else?)
Thank you very much.

Mac Book Air M1 Questions
Hi,
I have a Mac Book Air 10,1 that I can get for 100 Euros, I have it on sale or return at the moment.
It doesn't have a charger, so I need to get one, can I charge it from USB A from an old Mac Pro 5,1? Or do I need a dedicated charger?
There is also a fault where vertical black lines appear on the right of the screen. Is this a common fault with M1's? Is it fixable and if so does anyone know roughly how much it would cost?
The current owner assures me that the external HDMI works ok, but I don't have a USB-C to HDMI cable to test it myself.
The reason I ask about the charger is because I don't want to buy one if it's going to cost too much or is impossible to fix the graphics. It's currently at 21%
Thanks a lot

Java in system settings
Hello: I am a former Windows user from Spain. I have no experience with Macs. I recently purchased a MacBook Air M5. I have macOS "Golden Gate" installed, with the latest updates. I had to install Java 8 (Oracle) update 511. The question is quite simple, though I haven't been able to get an answer. I am concerned.
Is it normal for the section created by the Java installer within the Mac's System Settings to be completely blank, preventing the Java Control Panel from appearing? Java seems to be working correctly for me. Is this a bug in Java or its installer? Could it be an issue with my macOS installation? Should I restore my Mac to factory settings via the System Settings to try and fix this?
Thank you very much for your replies. Best regards.

RAM Usage so high
Guys, I just bought this MBA M5 24 GB/512 GB. I'm just confused why the RAM usage is so damn high when I only open a single app; Microsoft Edge...

Air 15” M4 24GB vs AIR 13 M5 16GB
hi, i can have new Macbook Air 13” M5 16GB and not much very used (battery has 1 cycle) Macbook Air 15” M4 24GB (it has a warranty for 6 months).
Both for 1300€.
I want to replace my traveling machine - my current Air M1 8GB would be awesome having 16GB, I would not replace it.
I lean towards M4 mainly because of the 24GB RAM.
Bonus is the bigger screen - I’ve read the heavieness in the bag is negligible and I don’t have brilliant sight so bigger is better.
I just need a laptop for traveling on a train or when I go to my gf’s family or smth like that.
Btw, I am devops engineer.
Btw2, I got a PC at home - Intel 270K Plus, RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, 64GB RAM - so i don’t need maxed specs of macbook, but i want to keep macbook for a long time.
Should I go with that M4 as I want to?
Thanks.

Macbook not charging when connected to charger.
My macbook is not charging when connected to charger but it's light on the charger cable is on when connected to mac. I tried turning off Optimized Battery Charging option and restart method i saw on YouTube for a fix but it still doesn't work. This issue started after i installed an update yesterday, it was working fine till then. I also tried charging with my phone's charger brick but it doesn't work and light on the cable won't turn on. What might be the issue?

MacBook Air 2023 Black Display Screen
Hey guys. This is my MacBook that my brother bought new in 2023. He gave it to me yesterday because I start uni in a few months. First day of owning it, the screen stops working. Nice.
It was working completely fine, I closed it for a few mins then opened it again and it has just been black ever since. I’ve tried charging it, holding the power button and it just does nothing. The keyboard light does come on. What should I do? At this stage im guessing it needs a screen replacement

I brought GPU acceleration back to my 2010 MacBook Pro — now I’m using modern browsers, editors, and AI coding tools on Monterey
I’m still using a 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro (MacBookPro7,1): GeForce 320M, 16 GB RAM, a SATA SSD, and an upgraded Core 2 Duo T9900. It runs macOS Monterey through OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
I tried Ventura, but using it on this machine was painful. Monterey still feels surprisingly responsive, so I decided to stay. Then I started rebuilding the software I use every day.
The problem isn’t just apps dropping macOS 12. There are also CPU instruction requirements, and this Mac’s GPU doesn’t support Metal. In the Chromium-based apps I was using, losing the OpenGL rendering path left the CPU doing rendering work the GPU could handle. A browser and a few Electron apps were enough to make the laptop hot, loud, and miserable on battery.
So I rebuilt Brave 1.98.60 and Electron 45.0.0 for Monterey, restoring OpenGL support and automatic renderer selection: Metal when available, OpenGL otherwise.
The difference on the GeForce 320M has been huge. GPU-accelerated rendering works again. The fan no longer sounds like a spacecraft, the laptop runs noticeably cooler, and battery life is much better in everyday use. I can keep several apps open and comfortably multitask again.
That turned into a larger project to keep my daily software usable:
- Brave: a modern browser with working GPU acceleration on the 320M. I also fixed a bug where elements near the top of web pages wouldn’t respond to clicks. I’d seen the same issue in the official Brave release based on Chromium 150, too. With the fix, those elements are clickable again.
- Zed: I adapted it to use OpenGL, giving me a fast, modern editor instead of having to stick with older JetBrains releases that still work on this machine.
- OpenCode: I compiled it for this Mac, so I can use a modern AI coding agent with some great free models. The models run remotely; the old Mac runs the client.
- T3 Code: I forked it, lowered the macOS requirement, restored OpenGL rendering through my custom Electron runtime, and kept in-app updates working by pointing them at releases in my own repository.
- Stats: I added support for monitoring GPU load on this setup, so I can see what the old NVIDIA GPU is doing alongside CPU and memory usage.
Cursor was another surprisingly good result. Codex and Cursor still work on my Monterey setup for now, but launching Cursor used to hammer the CPU. On my own Mac, I replaced the Electron runtime inside the installed Cursor app with my custom Electron 44.9.0 build with OpenGL support. That gave me a significant speedup, both at launch and in how responsive the interface feels.
The same approach can work with other Electron apps: keep the app’s code, but replace its bundled runtime with a Monterey-compatible, OpenGL-enabled build. Compatibility depends on the app and its native modules, so it takes testing, but you don’t necessarily need to rebuild the whole application from source.
Some of this work is about bringing software back to Monterey. Some is about making software that already launches run comfortably on older hardware.
I didn’t expect to end up using a modern editor, browser, and AI coding tools on a Core 2 Duo MacBook this comfortably. But here we are.
I haven’t done controlled performance or battery benchmarks yet. These are observations from daily use, but the improvement has been substantial enough to make this laptop useful to me again.
I’m collecting these unofficial builds, patches, and instructions on a small website. This is my own project; I’ll leave the links in a comment.
Anyone else sticking with Monterey on an older Mac? What software are you struggling to keep running?

Spec comparison, advice needed
So I’m coming from an M1 mini 16gb configuration and most of my work is video editing (vlog type content) and music production (film scoring). I’ve been wanting to get a macbook and im deciding between the m5 and M6 (24gb both) but i don’t really know what the core difference means. Is 12 core a big jump from 10? Or is it unnoticeable from each other?
Note: i don’t know much about specs of apple, i just bought the m1 cause i knew it was leagues better than my intel air and ive only started trying to understand now.

Problems with Java in system settings
I'm a former Windows user who recently bought a 15-inch MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage to escape the hell that Windows has become.
I love this computer.
I currently have the latest version of macOS Golden Gate installed.
I installed Java 8 (from Oracle) update 511, and it added a section in the bottom left of System Settings, but when I click on it, it's completely blank, and I can't see any options in the Java Control Panel.
Are you experiencing this?
It's a bug?
Is there a solution?
Because I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't fix it.
Thank you very much.
Best regards.

2015 Macbook Pro -- What can I best do with it?
I have a perfectly working 2015 Macbook Pro, formerly owned by a family member, which is currently sitting idle because the apps I wanted to run on it (e.g. Microsoft Office) needed a more up-to-date operating system than that 2015 can now receive from Apple. (I instead got a 2025 Macbook Air M5.) What do folks recommend to get the most future use out of that 2015? Thanks. (EDIT: I replaced the battery recently, before I realized the OS issue was there, so I'm not concerned about battery life of an 11-year-old machine.)

2019 MacBook Air to MacBook neo
Hi! I have a 2019 MacBook Air, 13in, with 8GB of memory. It seriously seems like it’s going to die on me soon. The fans run so loud, I can’t use Google Chrome and any other app at the same time without the computer getting hot and the fans going crazy. I have to use SPSS and other stats software for my degree, and it can just barely do it. It also is very, very slow. It takes a noticeably long amount of time to load pages or apps, even just to open settings. Watching YouTube on it is a nightmare lol.
I am stuck between the MacBook neo and the MacBook Air. I would like to be able to game on it, but it’s not a necessity, it would mostly be for school work. I really would like the best investment, which I think would be the MacBook Air, but I also am a broke grad student who would love to just get the Neo if it’s worth it. I just want something that runs better than my current MacBook. However I do love the haptic track pad/back lit keyboard, and I am very indecisive about this.
Any thoughts would be awesome, thanks :)
