I brought GPU acceleration back to my 2010 MacBook Pro — now I’m using modern browsers, editors, and AI coding tools on Monterey

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m still using a 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro (MacBookPro7,1): GeForce 320M, 16 GB RAM, a SATA SSD, and an upgraded Core 2 Duo T9900. It runs macOS Monterey through OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

I tried Ventura, but using it on this machine was painful. Monterey still feels surprisingly responsive, so I decided to stay. Then I started rebuilding the software I use every day.

The problem isn’t just apps dropping macOS 12. There are also CPU instruction requirements, and this Mac’s GPU doesn’t support Metal. In the Chromium-based apps I was using, losing the OpenGL rendering path left the CPU doing rendering work the GPU could handle. A browser and a few Electron apps were enough to make the laptop hot, loud, and miserable on battery.

So I rebuilt Brave 1.98.60 and Electron 45.0.0 for Monterey, restoring OpenGL support and automatic renderer selection: Metal when available, OpenGL otherwise.

The difference on the GeForce 320M has been huge. GPU-accelerated rendering works again. The fan no longer sounds like a spacecraft, the laptop runs noticeably cooler, and battery life is much better in everyday use. I can keep several apps open and comfortably multitask again.

That turned into a larger project to keep my daily software usable:

  • Brave: a modern browser with working GPU acceleration on the 320M. I also fixed a bug where elements near the top of web pages wouldn’t respond to clicks. I’d seen the same issue in the official Brave release based on Chromium 150, too. With the fix, those elements are clickable again.
  • Zed: I adapted it to use OpenGL, giving me a fast, modern editor instead of having to stick with older JetBrains releases that still work on this machine.
  • OpenCode: I compiled it for this Mac, so I can use a modern AI coding agent with some great free models. The models run remotely; the old Mac runs the client.
  • T3 Code: I forked it, lowered the macOS requirement, restored OpenGL rendering through my custom Electron runtime, and kept in-app updates working by pointing them at releases in my own repository.
  • Stats: I added support for monitoring GPU load on this setup, so I can see what the old NVIDIA GPU is doing alongside CPU and memory usage.

Cursor was another surprisingly good result. Codex and Cursor still work on my Monterey setup for now, but launching Cursor used to hammer the CPU. On my own Mac, I replaced the Electron runtime inside the installed Cursor app with my custom Electron 44.9.0 build with OpenGL support. That gave me a significant speedup, both at launch and in how responsive the interface feels.

The same approach can work with other Electron apps: keep the app’s code, but replace its bundled runtime with a Monterey-compatible, OpenGL-enabled build. Compatibility depends on the app and its native modules, so it takes testing, but you don’t necessarily need to rebuild the whole application from source.

Some of this work is about bringing software back to Monterey. Some is about making software that already launches run comfortably on older hardware.

I didn’t expect to end up using a modern editor, browser, and AI coding tools on a Core 2 Duo MacBook this comfortably. But here we are.

I haven’t done controlled performance or battery benchmarks yet. These are observations from daily use, but the improvement has been substantial enough to make this laptop useful to me again.

I’m collecting these unofficial builds, patches, and instructions on a small website. This is my own project; I’ll leave the links in a comment.

Anyone else sticking with Monterey on an older Mac? What software are you struggling to keep running?

Problems with Java in system settings

I'm a former Windows user who recently bought a 15-inch MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage to escape the hell that Windows has become.

I love this computer.

I currently have the latest version of macOS Golden Gate installed.

I installed Java 8 (from Oracle) update 511, and it added a section in the bottom left of System Settings, but when I click on it, it's completely blank, and I can't see any options in the Java Control Panel.

Are you experiencing this?

It's a bug?

Is there a solution?

Because I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't fix it.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

MacBook Air 2023 Black Display Screen

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey guys. This is my MacBook that my brother bought new in 2023. He gave it to me yesterday because I start uni in a few months. First day of owning it, the screen stops working. Nice.

It was working completely fine, I closed it for a few mins then opened it again and it has just been black ever since. I’ve tried charging it, holding the power button and it just does nothing. The keyboard light does come on. What should I do? At this stage im guessing it needs a screen replacement

2015 Macbook Pro -- What can I best do with it?

I have a perfectly working 2015 Macbook Pro, formerly owned by a family member, which is currently sitting idle because the apps I wanted to run on it (e.g. Microsoft Office) needed a more up-to-date operating system than that 2015 can now receive from Apple. (I instead got a 2025 Macbook Air M5.) What do folks recommend to get the most future use out of that 2015? Thanks. (EDIT: I replaced the battery recently, before I realized the OS issue was there, so I'm not concerned about battery life of an 11-year-old machine.)

2019 MacBook Air to MacBook neo

Hi! I have a 2019 MacBook Air, 13in, with 8GB of memory. It seriously seems like it’s going to die on me soon. The fans run so loud, I can’t use Google Chrome and any other app at the same time without the computer getting hot and the fans going crazy. I have to use SPSS and other stats software for my degree, and it can just barely do it. It also is very, very slow. It takes a noticeably long amount of time to load pages or apps, even just to open settings. Watching YouTube on it is a nightmare lol.

I am stuck between the MacBook neo and the MacBook Air. I would like to be able to game on it, but it’s not a necessity, it would mostly be for school work. I really would like the best investment, which I think would be the MacBook Air, but I also am a broke grad student who would love to just get the Neo if it’s worth it. I just want something that runs better than my current MacBook. However I do love the haptic track pad/back lit keyboard, and I am very indecisive about this.

Any thoughts would be awesome, thanks :)

macbook m5 pro wont stop going to 100% battery

Ive always kept it at 80% limit. I know it has to go to 100% occasionally. Today, it will not stop. Ill let it get to 100 for a little, unplug it, let go to 70, plug it back in, and then it goes right back to 100. If I leave it plugged in, it stays at 100. What gives? I tried restarted, I updated to the latest update.

Switching MacBooks

So currently I use a MacBook Air M2 with 8gb ram and I have the chance to swap to a pro with an m2 chip and 8gb ram too it’s just that the battery health is at 97% whilst mine is at 100.

I’m not sure if I should do it any tips ? And as for what I use the MacBook for mostly movies and games. Not high intensive games, mostly pixel games on steam and crossover too to play some games.

MacBook M4 Pro Apple refurbish OR brand new MacBook Air M5 - same pricing

I’m quite lost here. I really only need a computer for web surfing, some resume work but mainly watching streaming etc I know the Pro is a workhorse and a little heavier, but is the screen THAT much better for viewing? The Air is nice and sleek but the screen is bleak by all reports? I use headphones so speakers aren’t an issue.

Which would best suit a novice like me?? 14 inch pro or Air 15 inch. Some travel but more cafes and up and down stairs at home lol

I am NOT a professional user. But do enjoy my entertainment/social media viewing.

Interesting story to read(Water spill related)

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is just to share information and only one suggestion asked.I might be sharing this post to other related sub.

Any issue found by this post should be informed by the admins to me,then please delete... Please don't delete the post without my knowledge

This is a story of my friend, not mine.

So,What happened is few days ago,Friend done replacement of display and keyboard of his MBA...After 5 days, He spill(8-10 sips) the water(RO drinking water) of his MBA mistakenly...then he drained out...Tried to dry it by hair dryer..It seemed that the mac is dried...He tried checking this with closing the display/laptop...When he opened the mac,He found water inside display, then he kept in this position(90 degree as we use the laptop) in around 3 days,The water dried slowly and gave this device to Apple authorised service center when there very small bubbles inside the display and service center told that they will change the display...

Now that have checked the device throughly but didn't find any issue in it including liquid damage...In due process,Apple has a policy to check minutely if the device has corrosion or liquid issue...So they found none.

My question here is Should he check the device with official apple repair center or should he accept that the service center is correct...He/I doubt that the technician might have missed anything,Any person who can help me in this decision..

Is a 13-inch MacBook with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage enough for marketing and Adobe Creative Cloud?

Hello everyone!
I am looking at purchasing a MacBook and would appreciate some advice from people who work or study in marketing, communications, graphic design or other creative fields.

I am currently working in childcare but am exploring a future career in marketing, with an interest in brand strategy, communications, media and PR, and potentially event planning.

I recently spoke with someone from a marketing team who mentioned using Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications. This got me thinking about what laptop would be best to invest in as I work towards this career change.

The MacBook configuration I am considering is:
• 13-inch display
• 16GB unified memory
• 512GB SSD storage

I already own an iPad, so I am leaning towards a MacBook because I like the idea of having everything within the Apple ecosystem and being able to work between the two devices.

I would mainly want to use it for things such as:
• Adobe Photoshop and other Creative Cloud applications
• Marketing and communications coursework
• Graphic design and brand development
• Social media content creation
• General business and productivity tasks

I am not sure yet how heavily I will use creative software, particularly if I eventually move into more design-intensive work.

My questions are:
1. Would 16GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage be sufficient for these tasks?
2. Is a 13-inch MacBook practical for marketing work, or would a larger display be worth considering?
3. Would you recommend a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for this type of workload?
4. Is there anything you wish you had considered before purchasing your own laptop for marketing or creative work?

I would appreciate honest advice, particularly from people who use Adobe applications regularly or work in marketing professionally.

Thank you!

Looking for a brand new MacBook (need advice)

Always a Windows user, so would be my first Mac. This laptop will not be used for gaming or video editing, but rather the “stationary” programs - purely for work (marketing) and school.

My current work day looks like this:

Programs opened: Slack, Thunderbird email app, Excel (1-2), Word (1-5), SPSS, and Chrome (or 2 Chromes); the Chrome have constantly 5-15 tabs open, which are mainly AI, Magento, Shopify, Klaviyo, Akeneo, Meta platforms manager, TikTok manager, Google docs, YouTube, and social media accounts, occasionally Figma.

Sometimes I connect a second monitor, but that doesn’t increase the apps/tabs open, just that some of the current ones move to the other screen.

I do a lot of uploading already edited videos (or generate through web AI), or edit text files.

I was thinking about the Neo, since Air seems a bit excessive for what I do - I have a 16gb RAM Windows laptop at home, as well as a proper gaming desktop PC, and a PS5 for games already. Neo seems a good option because according to ChatGPT it’s gonna cover my work, and what I mainly want from my new Mac is a longer battery life and a better feeling trackpad.

I would like my new laptop to last hopefully 5 years (or even longer would be super nice).

I would appreciate Your responses, especially from people who use my aforementioned programs/apps, because I lack knowledge in tech. Lastly, price is a sensitive thing for me, and paying extra 600-700 for the Air over the Neo should really have a solid justification.

Thanks in advance!

Final hypothesis: the touchscreen MBP will have an iPad magic keyboard-style hinge and be able to fold screen-up on top of the keyboard.

Earlier I had shared my hypothesis that the touch MBP would have dual screens, including one on the outside of the case, so that it could be used as a tablet when closed.

But one major problem is that the rumors keep talking about the new MBP being thinner and lighter than the current ones, so two screens doesn't really make sense.

Today I was reading some comments on a Mac Rumors article about tomorrow's MBP announcement and someone suggested it might be similar to a Microsoft Surface. I tried to imagine an Apple Surface-style product and it didn't really make sense to me for a couple of reasons, one of which is I don't see how a tablet computer connected to a keyboard would be thinner and lighter than the current MBP's while retaining their performance capabilities.

That's when it hit me: a super thin OLED touchscreen display connected to a hinge similar to the one on the iPad magic keyboard could be designed in such a way that you could fold the screen to fit neatly on top of the keyboard, screen facing outward. You'd basically have a tablet that feels like a tablet and a laptop that feels like a laptop.

Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.

M1 Max vs M3 Pro vs M3 Max vs M4 Pro for local AI and app development?

I’m planning to buy a MacBook Pro in India for local AI models, text-to-speech (TTS), and app development.

My options:
M1 Max — 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD — ₹1.7L
M1 Pro — 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD — ₹1.3L
M3 Pro — 36GB RAM, 512GB SSD — ₹1.9L
M3 Max — 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD — ₹2.7L
M4 Pro — 48GB RAM, 512GB SSD — ₹2.6L

My main use cases:
Running high-quality TTS and other AI models locally.
Developing Android and iOS apps using React Native and Expo.
Running Android emulators, Xcode, VS Code, and local backend services.
Experimenting with open-source AI projects and voice models.

My questions:
Which offers the best performance for the money?
Is the M1 Max with 64GB RAM better for local AI than the newer options?
Is the M4 Pro worth ₹2.6L compared with the M1 Max at ₹1.7L?
Which would you choose for the next 4–5 years?
I’d appreciate real-world experiences, especially with local AI inference and TTS.

I want to purchase a MacBook Air 15 but I’m not sure if I should wait until Black Friday to purchase one since it’s right around the corner already. Do they drop in price during those days? I’ve never done shopping on either day.

Charging speed randomly dropping to ~13W

I noticed that in the last month or two my Macbook occasionally ( happened three times so far ) downgrades charging speed to around 13 watts. This is not enough to keep up with what I do, so it effectively runs on battery, despite being plugged in, and I only notice when it pops up the warning that the battery is at 10%.

Replugging the charging cable fixes it. I don't fiddle with the cable, everything is perfectly stationary, so it's not a bad connection.

Is it just me or it's a known problem?

I'm running Tahoe 26.7.1 on MBP M3 PM.

Ideal case MacBook Pro M5Max that gets hot with sustained use?

Hello,

I got this MacBook Pro M5 Max 18/40 core with high RAM for local AI/gaming/general work.

It gets very hot with sustained use in the fan stay on almost indefinitely, sometimes a few hours straight if gaming especially or local AI (MetalFX HUD temp goes between Nominal to fair)

Considering this, I don’t know if a case would be very good?

I do have Apple Care three-year plan, so dropping wouldn’t be the end of the world, but with quite expensive specs, but want to keep it in good shape/scratch free and might sell in 2-3 years before Apple care runs out .

I have a couple questions, if anyone has suggestions:

  1. does anyone have experience removing the full cover skins like Dbrand or some of those bigger names that are consistent with adhesive?
(I know I’d need to cover it near 100% to offset any sunlight subtle changing color over the years?)

  2. I imagine a silicone case would definitely insulate some heat right? But would I be OK putting a carbon fiber something like an ultra thin Pitaka or Aramid type carbon fiber woven case on it?
(Like in some of the pics is what I’m thinking)

Thanks a lot! 🙏 appreciate any insight or suggestions of new products!

Neo or Air for college?

I need a new laptop for college. I’ll be using it mostly to access online assignments, message boards, research, and word processing. I need something I can throw in my bag when I go to class, but that is also comfortable to use on longer assignments. Reviews I read are mixed in the Neo, but I also am on a budget.
