Hi folks,
Been working on a small project recently called “Landonix”.
( that is, Landon+Unix ... Can’t say I’m the best at naming things. :-] )
It’s a real, fully bootable kernel, filesystem, and userland/shell with a few of your standard Unix-like utilities and a few ports of Unix applications (namely awk and Vi)...
This is a private project for now... I essentially got this idea to see how much of a Unix-like system could realistically fit onto a 128K Apple //e. As of 0.12, boots straight off a Disk II drive without Apple DOS or ProDOS, and has fork/exec, pipes, logins, users and permissions. There’s also a version for a 64K ][+ with a language card that is a bit slower, (given) but it does retain all the main features...
As stated above, it uses its own filesystem with directories and file permissions, and journals its writes so an interrupted save won’t corrupt your files. The shell supports pipelines, variables and functions, and there’s cat, more, less, wc, man and a handful of other utilities. Vi has a 16K text buffer with undo, search and replace, and runs in either 40 or 80 columns on the //e.
I just finished version 0.12, and have many plans for upcoming versions....just wanted to see what you guys think..Let me know. :-)
