SPORT Casual football 5 to 8 a side

Hi there, I (31, male) have just moved to Wellington from London. Wondering what the causal 5 a side or 7 a side (don't mind so much what size game) scene is like here. Keen to find a regular game and quite flexible on timings. Do people just play through groups of friends, is there an app, people use facebook?

Used to play a good amount of games through Footy Addicts back in London which was very convenient.

WELLY Coming to welly for the day

Hey hey im coming down to welly for the day!

Anyone know piercing or jewellery shops in wellington (city or surrounding places, as long as a train/bus goes there) that i can go to? Not Michael Hill or whatever type jewellery, but i also dont want Lovisa type stuff. Usually its the stuff sold at piercing shops (if its got a specific name i cant think of it).

Anything fun i should go or do or see or places I should eat while im there, as well? I wish I could bring my lil doggie with me to the city. She can go on buses in my city but she cant go on commuter buses or the train even if shes in her little bag. One day I will show her the coast line and watch her lose her shit.

HELP! Dog/puppy cafe.

Kia,ora.

I'm new to Wellington and had a look online where i could find a place where you can hang out with dogs sadly to no avail, but I'm wondering if there is any grassroots knowlage that anyone has about local areas that does have a place like that in a cafe setting, i know there a cat cafe but i love dogs so it would be nice to find a place to hang out with them for an afternoon.

POLITICS I Voted Stickers

Is there a shortage of 'I Voted' stickers, or is only a Brooklyn issue? Might seem a small thing, but I think it encourages others to vote.

HELP! Sedated dog groomer

*EDIT: Found a local groomer whiling to help retrain him with grooming, minus doggy drugs. Appreciate the quick response from people who knew what I was after :)

*EDIT: I missed details: vet/groomer combo. My vet has both and assumed all vets did.

Hey I have a Maltese x shitzu 5 year old with aggression with being touched. This had lead to a lot a behavioural training etc.

His fur gets matted and he gets more annoyed the longer it gets. I can’t brush him let alone try to trim him. Just wondering if anywhere locally does sedated grooms? I’ve been quoted $800+ from my vet however I have done this twice before and they don’t groom him, more trim around his paws and doesn’t resolve it. It’s just a lot of money and I’d rather spend that where he can get a full body trim.

Any recs? Cheers

HELP! Bass Guitar Rental

Kia ora! I'm looking at picking up bass guitar to learn and play Rocksmith with.

Are there any places in Wellington City that offer bass guitar rentals?

There's a couple places that do it via delivery, but I'd rather hand it back in person, to avoid any damage through courier.

Any advice is appreciated!

INCOMING Moving to Wellington for uni in November. Short-term accommodation first or find a flat before arriving??

Hey Wellington!

I'm 26, single, and moving from Southeast Asia to Wellington this November to study a Master of Global Business at VUW (Pipitea campus). My student visa and enrolment are all sorted, but I still haven't figured out accommodation haha.

It's 27 October and I'm still overseas. International orientation is on 10–12 November, and classes start on the 16th, so things are getting pretty close.

Honestly, after months of paperwork and preparing to move abroad, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. My biggest concern is committing to a long-term rental without seeing it first. What if the room is damp, the flatmates aren't a good fit, or I just don't feel comfortable living there?

Would you recommend booking somewhere flexible for 2–3 weeks and looking for a long-term place once I arrive? Or would it be better to arrange everything before leaving?

I'm also unsure whether VUW halls, a private flatshare, or a studio would suit me best. I value privacy and independence, but I'm open to living with friendly flatmates.

Where would you recommend looking for accommodation? Any reliable websites, neighbourhoods with easy access to Pipitea, or rental red flags I should know about?

And if you were in my position, how would you plan the next couple of weeks? When would you aim to arrive and start looking for a place?

I'd especially appreciate hearing from current or former international students who've been through this, as well as Wellington locals who know the rental market.

Thanks so much for any advice! :)

P.S. I took down my earlier post because it was way too long and didn't really get to the point haha. Sorry for reposting! I'm genuinely looking for some advice from Wellington locals, so I'd really appreciate any tips or personal experiences. Thanks again!

INCOMING Moving to Wellington in December with a baby and a dog. Where should we live? (beach + trails + walkable village)

Kia ora r/Wellington,

My family is relocating in Dec/Jan and we’re trying to figure out where to land. I’d love some local takes.

About us

  • Couple with a 8 month old baby and a very active Lagotto Romagnolo
  • My partner will be working in Lower Hutt
  • I’ll be going to Vic’s Pipitea campus in early 2027, so I’ll be heading into the CBD regularly
  • We’re outdoorsy. Hiking, running, swimming, biking, and dog walks are a big part of our daily life

What we want within walking distance

  • Trails or bush tracks, ideally just a few minutes from the door
  • A beach we can walk to with the pram and the dog
  • Village life: cafés, a supermarket or decent shops, a gym, and a real sense of community where you get to know your neighbours
  • Good train or bus access is a big plus

House-wise

  • Open to renting first or buying straight away. Opinions welcome on which makes more sense for newcomers
  • Strong preference for something modern, warm and dry: newer build, heat pumps, low maintenance, standalone with a bit of yard for the dog

What we’ve looked at so far

  • Eastbourne: looks like it ticks the beach, bush and village boxes. Is it too cut off, and how is the commute to the Hutt and town in practice?
  • Petone: Jackson St, the beach and the flat walkability are appealing. How do people feel about the flooding, liquefaction and tsunami risk, and how close are real trails?
  • Porirua area: we’ve looked at Aotea for newer builds near the train. Are there better pockets nearby for beach, trails and village feel? Plimmerton, Paremata or somewhere else?

Questions

  1. Which suburb would you pick for us, and why? Feel free to suggest somewhere not on our list.
  2. What’s the downside of each of the three above? We’re thinking wind, sun, commute, hazard zones, and anything else a newcomer wouldn’t know.
  3. Renting vs buying for the first year: did you regret either one?
  4. Which suburbs have the best community feel for young families? Good playgroups, friendly streets, dog people.

Thanks heaps. We’re looking forward to being your neighbours! 🐕
