UTsnow FAQ

In an effort to cut down the number of posts asking the same questions, please check below to see if your question has been answered.

  • I have a trip planned for three weeks from now. Will there be good snow?
    • We don't know.
    • In the last 2 years, it has been 70 degrees in January, and dumped a blizzard in April. You can check the NOAA weather forecast or OpenSnow but anything more than a few days out is impossible to predict.
  • Will there be traffic/is the resort going to be busy?
    • Is it a pow day? --> Yes
    • Is it the weekend? --> Yes
  • How do I get to the resort?
    • The ski bus is a safe bet no matter the conditions.
    • Rental cars don't have snow tires, so don't count on being able to drive up unless it's a clear day.
  • How do I reserve parking?! Can I go without a reservation?!
    • Every resort is different.
    • Call the resort, or asking in the weekly megathread.

Question (No Location) Uintas backcountry camping and skiing.

My partner and I are thinking about trying to do a Uintas backcountry camping and skiing trip one weekend this coming season. Both experienced campers/backpackers and backcountry skiers, but this'll be the first time we've combined the two. Wondering if people might have advice or thoughts on easy trips to try it out? I have one kinda planned (below), but would also love to hear about other's trips that worked well!

Currently looking at camping below Hoyt Peak and then skiing that peak. Not sure how far you can get up the FS past the neighborhood, but it looks like about a 5mile skin to the base of the peak staying on the FS roads.

Snowbird - Alta First Time In Utah

Hi, me and a few buddies are planning a trip to SLC in mid February. We are looking to stay in SLC and taking the ski bus into Brighton/Snowbird/Solitude (skier and snowboarders). Can anyone give any insight on the ski busses? I know the schedule isn't out yet for this year, but previous year experiences would be appreciated.

Also does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay in SLC? We don't wanna spend a ridiculous amount, but still wanna be able to get to the ski bus/ restaurants/ a bar without having to walk a super far amount.

Thanks!

General Discussion First time visiting Utah!

I am happy my family is finally going to visit the beautiful state of Utah! I have been researching and reading all I can, I even put together a spreadsheet of the ski resort with % of green runs, elevation, do the lifts have foot rests, etc.

However, it is always good to confirm with real people on their experiences. I am leaning towards Deer Valley because my two teens have never skied in their life, and they seem to have a lot of good green runs for them to learn on. I also liked the beginner lift ticket prices for them because they truly are beginning. I personally have not skied in 10 years, and my old knees would appreciate a resort with footrests on the lifts.

My husband does snowboard after a few days skiing so he will be traveling to other mountains in the area like Park City, if we go with Deer Valley. He is not opposed to driving an hour if a mountain is a must do.

Powder Mountain and Brighton sounded good as well. I know people have their favorite slopes for various reasons such as cost, crowds, etc. Would love to hear real peoples thoughts and experiences!

We will also be driving down to the big National Parks. Brian Head is around there, but the elevation concerns me since we are coming from a low altitude and my oldest child got altitude sickness years ago. Out of the 5 main national parks, which is a must do?

Thank you and can't wait to visit a new state!

General Discussion Research on Outwear Brands

Hey all, I’m in a marketing research class and my group is doing a project on ski and snowboard jackets and gear.
We put together a short survey about how people pick what to buy and what they think of a few brands.
It takes about 5 to 10 minutes and it’s anonymous. You don’t need to be an expert or know any specific brand, we just want honest answers from people who ride.

Would really appreciate it if you have a few minutes. Thanks!

General Discussion What combo of passes to get this season?

Planning to spend most of the winter in SLC again and trying to figure out the best pass combo.

I've snowboarded for ~15 years and got back into skiing last season after a long break. I'm intermediate on skis now and planning to ski more this year, so Alta/Deer Valley are much more useful to me.

Last year I had Full Ikon + Epic and did around 30 days. I ended up at Solitude a lot because it's unlimited, but got a little bored going there so much.

I'm leaning toward Full Ikon + Brighton Off-Peak, maybe Epic too. I work remotely, so being able to hit Brighton after work sounds great and would let me save my 7 Ikon Brighton days for full/weekend days.

I'm also tempted by a Snowbird Summit pass since I really like Snowbird, but Full Ikon + Brighton + Summit starts feeling like overkill.

For those doing 30–40+ days around SLC, what pass combo are you running?

Anyone doing Ikon + Brighton Off-Peak? Is adding Snowbird Summit overkill?

Anything else I should consider?

Snowbird - Alta Anyone have Freeloader passes available?

Is anyone not using their freeloader passes (under 18) at Snowbird? My 15 and 13 year olds fell in love with skiing but they've outgrown the Ski Utah 4-6th grade passes a couple of years ago. Last season was a bust and they’re hoping to ski a few times this year, but I'm at a loss at how to afford their skiing this season. I know it’s a long shot, but can anyone help?

Question (No Location) Ski Trip Advice

Me and my buddies are looking to do a ski trip in SLC mid December and want some advice on resorts to go to. We have collectedly decided that both snowbird and alta are too expensive. I was looking at brighton, snowbasin, and solitude. We are all intermediate skiers/snowboarders and like steeper runs. Which resorts should we pick? Honestly though any 3 day pass or combination of resorts under 300 dollars would be amazing. Also wanted to add that we would be skiing Tuesday-Thursday. We are all from the east coast and really want to escape North Carolina. Thanks!

General Discussion Ski Groups?

Hey all, new-ish to SLC, in my 30s, and heading into my first full winter season here. Are there any groups you all know of to help meet people to ski/ride with in the area? I love skiing solo, but sometimes its fun to share the day with others too.

Edit to add: I went overboard with passes this season - Altabird, Ikon, and Brighton off peak. I'll figure out my favorite spots this season and be more reasonable next year. Aiming for ~100 days. Skier, but happy to go with boarders as well.

Deer Valley F&F codes

Hi! My partner and I are planning to ski Deer Valley February 3–5, 2027, and are hoping to find someone with an eligible Ikon Pass who has any unused Friends & Family discounts to share. We’d be very grateful! Happy to coordinate through the official Ikon system. Also, willing to pay if needed! Thanks so much! 🎿

Question (No Location) Dentist for mouth guards recommendations?

Hi all, I’m moving to SLC for the winter to teach snowboarding. I’m looking to get a mouth guard to make sure I don’t bite my tongue + reduce concussions.

Looking for recs for people experience with dentists in the area that works with riders

I think I’d have to pay out of pocket

Thanks

Snowbird - Alta Meet the Tech Startup Bringing Drone-Powered Cloud Seeding to Utah's Ski Resorts (and is already working with Snowbird)

This is the same company that created 19 million gallons of rain over Homer, AK, in just 3 hours with two drones. Now, it wants to partner with every ski resort in Utah.

If drones can help solve the water crisis in the West, I'm ALL IN. But color me skeptical... Cloud seeding has been around forever, and there's probably a reason why most resorts aren't investing heavily in it.

But I could be wrong. Curious what other people think.

Question (No Location) Looking for beginner adult ski lesson recommendations

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I think I'll book 3 days at Alta.

Hello all. I will be in SLC area the first week of January and would like to learn how to ski. I am thinking of doing a 3-day group lesson. I've been doing a good amount of research but can't decide.

  • I am a 35 y/o female skiing for the first time
  • Looking for great instructors that will help me progress quickly
  • I will be staying in South Jordan with family so I'll be commuting from there daily (less than an hour drive each way would be ideal)
  • Price is not a factor

Thanks for the help!

Snowbird - Alta Anyone with an unused Summit Snowbird Freeloader pass willing to pass it on?

Hello everybody! I know this is a long shot, but if anyone still has a Snowbird Freeloader pass they haven't given away and doesn't think they'll end up using it, I'd be incredibly grateful if you'd consider passing it on to me!

If you don't know what a Freeloader Pass is, its a free season pass for people 18 or younger that comes with the purchase of any Summit season pass (that isn't Young Adult).

I'd really love the opportunity to get out skiing more this season, and it'd genuinely mean a lot to me. I know these passes are valuable, so absolutely no pressure if you'd rather keep yours or have someone else in mind.

Either way, thanks for being part of such a great ski community, and thanks for considering it!

Snowbasin/Powder/Nordic Refunds from last season

I purchased a day pass for SnowBasin last year for a day the resort ultimately was not open due to the terrible snow year last year. I grew up skiing there and like to go back once a year. Sadly I can't afford to buy an ikon pass or get away from work commitments more than a handful of times a year so a day pass is pretty precious to me I've tried to call the resort and emailed [ticketsales@snowbasin.com](mailto:ticketsales@snowbasin.com) and have not heard a peep back. My way of thinking is if the resort was not open the day you purchased due to lack of snow they would be willing to work with customers to arrange something the next year. Has anyone had any luck getting a resort to work with you in a situation like this or am I just out $225 or whatever I paid? If that is the case I will never spend another day or cent at Snowbasin.
