Travel Advice Visiting Utah in February

Hi Utahns, we are 4 guys (24) from Denmark coming to Utah for a road trip in February 2027 (7th-28th). We were hoping to get a bit of a glimpse into some real American culture. We really want to meet locals and try some local experiences. We are looking for suggestions for what we should do, see and where we should go.

If you or someone you know has suggestions about local experiences or events, we would love to hear from you! It could also be trying to work on a ranch, ride horses or something completely different. We are open to all ideas.

Q&A Where to find rough cut lumber in Northern Utah?

I have been doing some woodworking using lumber from big box stores. Last year I built custom shadow boxes using lumber from Ash trees that fell at my in-laws place that I milled and dried myself. They were beautiful.

I have the tools and the desire so I am going to replace all the cabinets in my house.

I would like to find a supplier for rough cut lumber and maybe lower prices on sheet products. I have found lots of shops that want to make me cabinets, but none that just provide wood. I have also found plenty of places that sell construction grade wood. Also not what I am looking for.

What other suppliers are out there? I would love something north of Salt Lake if possible.

Other Do you have Milkweed or Alfalfa at home?

Hi guys!

I have a college biology project due this Saturday, and for my project, I need to photograph a Milkweed plant, bugs interacting with an Alfalfa Plant, or Monarch Butterflies. There is a website she provided me with, but I don't really have the time to scout the entire state of Utah for these items.

I am wondering if anyone in the valley within 30 miles of Kearns/West Valley has these plants planted in their yards that I would be able to photograph. I am aware that they might be dying or dead, but these are the only requirements for my project.

Thanks in advance!

Other Should I have received a ballot yet

Salt Lake County.

First time Utah voter after moving over the summer...trying to get a sense of what's normal.

Registered in like May and my voter registration shows as active. Zero indication that my ballot has been mailed yet on any of the trackers. Is this normal or should I be calling the county clerk? Is it dependent on the city I live in?

UPDATE: I called the clerk. I'm opted out of a mail ballot (even though I re-registered to opt in after I realized my screw up). I have to vote in person and they can apparently change to future mail voting there.

Press Release

For Immediate Release 10/26/2026

Indivisible Ogden

Local community Activist, David Belnap, was arrested on Sunday for placing signs identifying the locations of ALPR AI surveillance cameras, known commonly under the brand 'Flock'. Information regarding surveillance technology such as location and use of cameras should be freely available to the public. Mr. Belnap, by placing signs, ones that do not obstruct the use of the camera, was providing information which should already be accessible to the public.

Hundreds of AI Surveillance ALPR cameras are operated by agencies across Weber County, such as Weber County Sheriff, various municipalities, and private businesses. These cameras are leased from companies including Flock, Motorola, Axon, and others. There is no official registry of ALPR camera locations, with community advocates struggling to get information agency by agency. Significant gaps exist within Utah's ALPR policy as an ever interconnected world provides more avenues for abuse and misuse. According to information released by the Utah Civic Compact, the Weber County Sheriff’s ALPR data was searched five million times, with 96% of those searches coming from outside of Utah, with a shocking 125,719 from federal agencies. Utah law offers some protections against agency misuse of this technology, but none that limit how the companies themselves use the data analysed from ALPR systems.

Local community activists were notified of sheriff deputies harassing Mr. Belnap while placing these non-obstructing markers identifying the location of AI surveillance cameras. Activists arrived at the location to find Mr. Belnap's car being towed and Mr. Belnap arrested. The County has not yet made bail available to Mr Belnap.

We demand that the Sheriff department not arrest people who simply want to clearly mark when civil rights are being endangered by privatized surveillance.

We are asking community members to speak out against injustice. Contact the Weber County Sheriff about the arrest of Mr. Belnap, your state representative to ask for clear policy governing ALPR companies and agencies, and your mayor or city councilor about not spending tax dollars on AI surveillance technology.

On Monday, Oct. 26th, join us at 4 p.m. to stand in solidarity for our valued colleague. We will gather by the road that leaves the jail, on the NW corner of 12th and Depot Drive (700 West 12th Street), to demand his release!

Then join us on TUESDAY, Oct. 27th, at 6:00 p.m. for a Community Forum on FLOCK cameras, at Pleasant Valley Library, 5568 S. Adams Ave., Washington Terrace, in the Black Box Theatre.,

Other First speeding ticket - Out of state driver

Seeking Advice: First Speeding Ticket in Utah (Out-of-State Driver)

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some advice regarding a speeding ticket I recently received in Blanding, Utah.

I'm a Delaware resident and was pulled over for allegedly driving 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. However, I'm fairly certain I was traveling around 38 mph. The speed limit changed suddenly as I entered the town, and I may not have noticed the change immediately.

The officer stated that I was going 47 mph, and I chose not to argue at the time.

This is my first traffic stop and speeding ticket in nearly 10 years of driving in the US, so I'm unfamiliar with how to handle this situation, especially as an out-of-state driver.

My main concern is avoiding points on my driving record and any increase in my car insurance premiums.

I'd really appreciate advice on the following:

Is it worth contesting the ticket or hiring a traffic attorney in Utah?

Are there options like traffic school, a plea in abeyance, or a reduced charge to keep this off my driving record?

Could this ticket affect my Delaware driving record and insurance rates?

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation in Blanding or San Juan County, Utah?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Travel Advice What is the More Scenic or Fun Drive?

Making plans to head to Brian Head for an event next July.

I really have two different options, and I'm wondering which one is the more scenic or fun drive:

  1. Fly into SLC and drive to Brian Head.

  2. Fly into Vegas and drive to Brian Head.

Won't really have time to make a lot of stops, but if one route is just a better driving experience, I would lean towards that.

I've spent a lot of time in SLC for work, so I know that airport and the immediate surrounding area. Never been further south than Midvale, though.

Been to Vegas a few times, but of course never made it off the Strip.

I know SLC to Brian Head is further, but I'd trade off if the drive is better.

Utah actually has 3 federal wildlife refuges, but the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge has to be one of the top birding destinations in the United States. It's a great spot for photography, too.

Q&A Beware of salvage/rebuilt/ hail damaged cars

Trying to buy my daughter a new car and we ended up looking at a rebuilt title car. We liked the car but found out Allstate will not insure rebuilt title cars. Also Goldenwest Credit Union will not give you a loan for a rebuilt title car bought from a dealership but will if it is bought from an individual.

We are looking at a hail damaged car (GP Motors)and we still are not sure if it will have a clean title or not.

How do these large dealerships like AutoSavvy sell cars if you can’t insure them or get a loan on them?

September was the biggest month on record for ICE flights through Utah.

One man who was taken to California joked that the chains around his hands, feet and waist made him feel as important as the drug lord El Chapo.
