Hi everyone!! PLEASE NO SPOILERS. I’m on season 4 of my very first ever watch of the show - I really love it, I think it’s wholesome, funny, etc.
BUT I literally had to stop watching it because Phil pisses me off. He’s kind of just awful to Claire, right? The constant jokes about other women ehhhhh :( He made a joke about having an affair with a receptionist during a yard sale like out of the blue and I think that was my final straw. It’s just hard for me to enjoy him being a good father or friend when he kind of takes Claire for granted.
Should I just get over it and finish the show? Does he ever get better or redeem himself?
If I ever have a husband like Phil - SHOOT ME 😂😭

It all depends whether they started “falling out” or separated before their divorce in 2003 but in season 5 episode 8, jay says “I did make out with Rita once but it was 15 years ago”. Season 5 took place between 2013 and 2014 which means jay was married to Dede. In another episode Earl say that he had sex with Dede. Some people may see it as him making something up but Earl seems to be the type of person to do something that horrible. Plus the show has a history of justifying stuff by making the other person do it as well. Tbh it doesn’t really change my opinion of either. They are both great characters.

I know it’s been posted before but after a quick read, I’m a bit bothered by the “she’s 23, she’s an adult” perspective. If you know the human brain, you know the frontal lobe doesn’t close until 24-25. So she’s actually not a full functioning adult. She still has child like symptoms bc of this. I’m not saying her parents shouldn’t let her, but why not sit her down and talk about how this older man is literally taking advantage of her younger body knowing she’s still not fully mature and mentally developed?? I get this is “modern” family, but there’s literal scientific proof that shows people in their young 20s still have impulse control, risk taking tendencies, difficulty prioritizing, mood swings and not reading social cues - hence dating a 22 older man. It’s just not ethically right. Thoughts on this perspective?

I saw the post about new content. Not sure if this has ever been asked, but what are the characters’ middle names? I know that I have heard most of them on the show, and I think I’ve heard Jay addressed by two different middle names. But can we create a conclusive list?
Please list full name and episode in reference.

And let’s switch it up
I’m on season 2 Someone to Watch Over Lily, and when Alex is freaking out in the car now that she snuck in the school and skipped a class. It reminds me of Claire and Phil. Hayley being Claire and Alex being Phil
Now usually people would say Luke and Phil have a lot of similar traits but I wanna know
What are some similar traits Claire and Luke has together and what are your favorite uncommon mentioned moments they have together
Same with Hayley and Alex and Phil, what traits of Phil do you see in his daughters? And underrated moments? I can tell because I’m watching for the first time I think Phil loves Hayley and loves how she’s a popular girl. That’s what I picked up on.
What are your thoughts?

At least in the first few seasons
I'm doing my annual rewatch of the show and I just got to the episode where cam makes a mess in the kitchen after cooking w lily in s3 and then leaves it all day because he just expects mitch to take care of it all because he "doesn't like cleaning up" because it's "sticky, messy and gross and all (he) wants to do after eating is lie down". And it got my thinking about how terrible a partner he is throughout the course of the show. Of course, mitch isn't great either and their relationship is toxic but Cam is just downright emotionally manipulative on a regular basis and gets to play the "fun dad" to lily while mitch is left to do the actual disciplinary actions for lily to give her some stability. Even in the episode where lily doesn't want a baby brother and Mitch assumes it's because of how much Cam coddles her it 1) wasn't an unreasonable assumption because she was only being possessive towards Cam and not Mitch and 2) even when Mitch learnt that it may be because if his issues sharing, Cam immediately took it that his problems coddling lily weren't issues anymore and pinned all the blame on mitch.
Tldr; Cam is manipulative AF and even tho mitch is the furthest thing from perfect, I still don't think he's quite as bad as cam
EDIT: I think he's a very bad partner but he's still a great dad to lily and generally a pretty good member of the larger family.

all right i’m not trying to start a war here or anything, and i get that i’m probs in the minority here, but seriously are you guys not tired of posting the same ol’ shit every day?
i don’t understand why a majority of this sub is only ever talking ab “oh, haley should’ve / shouldn’t have ended up w dylan / andy” or “claire was right in the grocery store incident” or “who’s more toxic: cam or mitch?”
like, there are 250 episodes of this series, have we seriously not found something more interesting to discuss by now? there are a million different people posting the exact same posts every other day, except some happen to have pictures. and it isn’t just on this sub, it’s ALL of them 💀 again, ik i’m probably in the minority here, and i wouldn’t ever want to censor anyone, but man i just miss all the silly posts and having actual discussions w people about my favorite shows. it used to be way more fun here. obvs this doesn’t apply to everyone. we still get some entertaining things flying around this sub sometimes, so thank you for that.
and i’m not saying it’s wrong to make those types of posts, obvs we get new people in the fandom every day so there are bound to be some repeat posts, but that isn’t the case for all of them. some of these i see (in this sub and others) are posted weekly by the same people, and only slightly different. it’s just so boring.
okay, rant over. sorry for the mini tantrum 😪

First, he literally knocked Claire’s cart down just to talk to that lady. Then, instead of apologising, he turned his own kids against their mother, called her crazy, and spent the entire episode taunting her for being “obsessed with being right.” And when Claire FINALLY got the proof she needed, he had the audacity to say there was something intrinsically wrong with her?!
LIKE, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? The man couldn’t even bring himself to apologise for being wrong.
Honestly, if I were in Claire’s position, I’d have done the exact same thing. When your own husband and children are treating you like you’re a fucking maniac, are you just supposed to shut up and accept it?

The base formula for most shows is
Take someone unlikable ----- then, make them likable!
I gave it four seasons to see some improvement. I don't mind her neurotic, controlling mothering. My mom was like this so I'm familiar with it. I realize Phil does little to assist in the parenting and house work department.
It's the never ending desire to take Gloria down. To humble her. Embarrass her. Wanting Gloria to look as ugly as Claire feels and behaves. The constant competition with Gloria for male attention and validation when Gloria isn't competing and doesn't even care.
It's pitting her two daughters against each other. Intentionally manipulating everyone so she gets her way. It's still being nasty towards Mitch, even though they're grown adults.
True to sitcom, no character is perfect, but each of them has at least one redeeming, charming quality. Not Claire.

This show is probably one of the funniest shows I’ve watched, and I’ve watched some pretty funny shows. It’s funny, stupid, wholesome but I’m really fucking fed up on how the show uses sexual stuff as a plot device or how it frequently has cheating. Alex’s first kiss was her getting SA’d, and then she got SA’d by Ruben and then the show had the audacity to make them a couple. Andy was supposed to be this wholesome, loyal character but then they made him a cheating scumbag to match with haley. And tried to justify it by making his girlfriend a cheater as well. I don’t like how haley treats Dylan like shit, gets with Andy and then ends up with Dylan. This doesn’t get in my way of enjoying the show. I don’t need to hate the show because of a Hitchcock or two much sure makes me angry.

I was watching the Payton Manning episode and right at the end of the episode I realized we have a Payton Manning Broncos poster right behind the tv.
