EPISODE DISCUSSION FOR FIRST TIME WATCHERS

Please adhere to the guidelines in the series hub.

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out

Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.

- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?

Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!

- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?

There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.

- I've just finished the show. What now?

Check out the epilogue. Click here for a thread of additional content. Or the FAQ archive which consist of various questions about the show.

SEASON 6 Funniest scene in Lost

By far the funniest scene in the show is Desmond gearing up to hit poor wheelchair bound John with his car for the second time in a week. It's so absurd and unexpected I couldn't stop laughing.

First time doing a pumpkin carving that was more complex than a normal jack-o-lantern and it turned out great I think! A couple pieces fell off but don’t tell anyone.
I carved it with my girlfriend who is binging it for the first time and is currently on the season one finale. Can’t wait for her to find out what this is😆

Why does no one have a shred of loyalty among the main cast???

I'm halfway through season 4 and I cannot watch without posting this first

What is it with the main cast of this show and their inability to stay loyal to one partner

Let's start with Kate, the Queen of disloyalty. She starts off stuck between Jack and Sawyer, kissing Jack first and then Sawyer later, and in season 3 she chooses to sleep with Sawyer, and then Jack stays behind so they can both escape. But then when everyone regroups she's giving Jack eyes while being with Sawyer. When Jack has eyes for Juliet instead she decides only then to sleep with Sawyer again because she can't have Jack and wants Jack to want her. She also gets mad at Sawyer for calling her out on it and begins gaslighting him. Later when they're on the way to the radio tower she's giving eyes to Jack, then crashes out on Sawyer who also insults her, and then gets upset that Jack has eyes for Juliet instead. Now we're in Season 4 where even though Jack is clearly attached to Juliet, she's smiling and flirting with Jack knowing this. Now to make it super clear why I'm annoyed, I am on Season 4 episode 10, where she told Jack he can't have her unless he also wants Aaron, and after doing exactly what she asked, she goes to do things for Sawyer behind his back, which is insane to me because respectfully Sawyer can't go more than 5 seconds without being an asshole to her, which is funny because he's actually nicer to Hugo and Claire than her now. And of course all of this is on the Island and after. We on top of all of this have the numerous boyfriends she had while on the run, of whom she got all of them into trouble. And I know people have responded to me on this before saying the best friend chose to get in the car, but she chose to go involve him knowing she's bringing him into trouble, she uses her looks and flirts to get what she wants then acts like a victim when something bad happens to those people.

Let's move onto Jack next. He is not as worse but still bad. At first he seemed loyal with the wife he helped heal and all. But then he has eyes for the next lady crying to him for a surgery? And had the audacity to be upset with his father giving him genuine advice based on what he literally saw happening? His ex-wife is no better because while Jack is cheating on a very small scale and immediately regrets and walks away when it became real, and then immediately was honest with his wife with what he did, she was cheating the entire time and only told him when he decided to be honest. The difference being that she didn't regret cheating and unlike him didn't want to fix anything and just left. On the island he has liked Kate from the beginning and that's clear, but again she sends mixed signals because her mentally deranged mind can't settle down for more than 5 seconds, and when he sees her with Sawyer in the cell he makes his decision and settles for Juliet. But then Kate keeps giving him signals until finally he does settle for Kate as we see in the future, only for her to do the same thing his ex-wife did and again she's only upset she got caught. The audacity on this woman to tell him she doesn't want him around "her son" in a state she caused him to be in on top of everything he's going through, when she isn't even biologically related to Aaron.

Sawyer. He hasn't cheated on the Island, but he had obviously terrible loyalty before it. The issue I have with him is his need to always have something wrong. That when the other shoe doesn't drop he takes off his own shoe and drops it. He ruins anything good going for him again and again. Although Kate is where I can't 100% blame him because he has a right to be upset that she's just using him.

Juliet is just a victim in most of this, yes she was the affair for Goodwin, but Goodwin is the cheater, and Juliet is the homewrecker, and to be completely fair his wife had a terrible attitude. But then the poor girl has Goodwin die, only because Ben wants her all to himself. Then she has Jack but again she is just a pawn because he's only with her because he can't have Kate.

In all honesty Sawyer and Jack both should've just left Kate's ass single on the Island for all 4 seasons so she could learn her lesson because they must have no self respect to want a woman that keeps jumping between 2 men. Juliet poor girl should've also set her line or maybe even gone for Sawyer because she knows what she wants and I think she could fix him.

I love Sun and Jin, but I hate that Sun cheated. But I completely see where the writers went with Bernard because killing people for a living is definitely worse than cheating, and therefore I guess I can't be too upset with Sun but at least Jin was honest about what he does for her father and she never planned on being honest with Jin about the affair. It's actually funny because she has the audacity to slap Juliet for telling Jin something he deserved to know, and that she should've told him herserlf but never planned to and even lied to him about. That is slapping the same woman who is the reason you know you're pregnant, that the baby is Jin's and that is genuinely trying to keep you alive.

At least we have Rose and Bernard to show us what a real healthy loyal loving couple is like. And Charlie and Claire towards the end and beginning, since we have the middle portion where Charlie was tweaking. Oh and Alex and Carl, poor Carl I really didn't expect 3 people to die, Danielle has been here since Season 1 and I really thought we'd explore her backstory at least once before she died but oh well.

A few ridiculous bits and pieces

For the most part I have enjoyed Lost but there have been a few ridiculous bits and pieces.

- Sawyer running the exact niche scam that had his family killed and also keeping with him an old tear stained letter he wrote when he was a kid. While I can see what is happening narratively. It seems clumsy and contrived. And then Kate coming up with a full psychological theory behind his actions and attributing good to this guy who has only terrorized them the entire season. She also did the same psychological breakdown when Sawyer stole the guns in the long con.

Kate staging an elaborate bank heist to obtain a toy plane that hurt several people.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Character-based rewatch

Post image
22 Upvotes

Currently watching my way through Desmond-centric and Desmond-heavy episodes. He’s my favorite character and, to me, the most important on the show. So I wanted to follow his journey more closely! After this I’m diving into Lost: Circle to completely rewire my brain lol.

Anyone else ever do a specific character-focused rewatch? Learn anything new?

FIRST TIME WATCHER Season 1 feels more like a Soap Opera than a Drama

I seriously hope it gets better in the later seasons, but right now it feels interesting, disjointed, and boring all at the same time. Currently on the 18th episode, and I'm already over the Korean couple and Sayid's forced accent. Michael started interesting but fell off, and so did Claire. The mystery and intrigue of the island is still there, though the tension is constantly interrupted by all the flashbacks. So far it's a 4/10.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Why didn't Desmond tell about the time when he didn't push the button?

I'm on my 15th or 16th or 20th rewatch, Idk, I've lost count. But one thing that's always annoyed me, is that in the beginning of season 2, when Jack keeps insisting that nothing will happen if the button isn't pushed.

Why didn't Desmond tell Jack "Well, FYI Brotha, there was one time when I didn't push it in time. Everything made of metal was flying around the room, and the Island was shaking." Obviously he wouldn't mention the plane crash, because he didn't know about the logs.

I guess that leads to a bigger question. Why was Desmond willing to along with Lockes plan and not pushing it?

It shouldn't take the logs to convince him that pushing the button is real, he's experienced first hand what happens if you don't.

Discussion Charlotte [Spoilers for the Whole Show] Spoiler

On my umpteenth rewatch, and I just got to Charlotte's death. It got me thinking.

I'm fully aware that basically the entirety of the show, and especially the events of season 5, ultimately serve the purpose of fulfilling a perpetual time loop and placing our main characters into their cosmically ordained positions in order to bring about the events at the end of the show. Everything that happens was always meant to happen, and everyone has their role according to Jacob's/the island's grand plan (for sake of convenience I will just say "the island's" going forward).

But watching Charlotte join the cast, not do anything consequential towards the island's plan, and then die and get lost to the flashes, made me wonder what exactly her role truly was in the grand scheme of things.

Obviously, her death is what motivates Daniel to change his views on time travel, setting him on the path to get killed by Eloise, and setting the group on the path to detonating the bomb at the Swan. Two of the most major points of the plan, caused by Daniel's desire to change the future and maybe reverse Charlotte's death.

But my question is: is that it? Her entire role was to die and be the motivation for a more important character? Please, if you have more insight or a different perspective, or any points that I missed, I would love to read them. But to me, it seems like a textbook case of fridging.

This is nothing against the writers, and absolutely nothing against Charlotte or Rebecca Mader. I love them both to death, I greatly enjoyed having her character in the show. I want to make it clear that I'm talking about her role in the island's plan, not her role in the story.

Anyway, this train of thought has led me down an interesting rabbit hole that I will explore more deeply in a follow-up post. Expect big things in the coming days.

Thoughts on seasons 3-5 during my re-watch

I am in the middle of season 5. I feel like the show went up to another level at the middle of season 3 and from there to season 5, it's a lot more enjoyable than the first two seasons. We got so many answers during this period.

FIRST TIME WATCHER Season 5

Just started season 6.
Season 5 is clearly the worst right?

Sawyer and crew spent 3 years with Dharma a significantly longer amount of time then with the plane survivors so realistically thats their people. Only Jin has a reason for being more loyal to the crash survivors because of Sun.

Kate was really only with Sawyer for a few weeks yet spent years with Jack and all of a sudden the show treats their relationship like they were madly in love.

Sawyers the man for getting 3 of the best looking girls on the show.

God damnit why is John Locke still alive… I keep cheering that hes dead yet another fake out death.

Annoying that Sawyer doesnt understand that if Jack and co. didnt come back the time skips wouldnt have ended and they would all be dead.

Desmond is the best character on the show, I just wanted him to be happy with Penny yet he gets dragged back in, just let him live and be happy!!!

Richard is the man, guys cool as a cucumber

Discussion Rewatch questions

I just finished a rewatch and I kept track of little questions or thoughts, when I finished, I deleted things that got answered to my satisfaction and got left with a cheeky 15 questions. I understand there is most likely no actual answer to most of these or up to interpretation but would just like to hear people's thoughts or ideas anyways. Do not feel obligated to answer all of them, that would be awesome! But feel free to pick and choose.

  1. What are some of your theories about who Jill is, the lady helping Ben in the regular world?

  2. Who do you think is shooting on the outrigger during the time jumps?

  3. Why is there a rope in the ground after the well disappears, just attached to the timeline because Sawyer is holding it?

  4. Who created the pendulum that locates the island?

  5. How does the whole summoning the monster from Ben's room work (almost like a mini heart of the island), and what do you think he meant by it summoning him instead?

  6. Why did Eloise leave the island?

  7. Why does MIB say he is disappointed at

everyone on the beach after knocking out Richard, he brought them all to the statue and had them wait?

  1. Why is MIB stuck as Locke?

  2. Who do you think killed all the ajira passengers?

  3. Why didn't Flocke just let Jack die on the beach when mortars came?

  4. Why do you think the heart of the island light is so bright in "Across the Sea" but dimmer in the finale?

  5. Why do you think they changed up the words when Mother was passing on to Jacob her role, she said "same as me" then with Jacob to Jack he says "now you're like me" I know it's a subtle difference but it seems like a conscious choice since we see the changing of the guard 3 different times.

  6. What do you think the chant Mother and Jacob means when passing the torch? Even though it is just symbolic.

  7. Whose skeleton down at the cork?

  8. Why didn't Desmond or Jack become a smoke monster, messing with the heart of the island?

Thanks!

Ranking Characters from Most to Least Interesting

Post image
0 Upvotes

Ranking based on the best acting, best back story, and how interesting I found each character. Some higher entries with less screen time are character whom I’d have loved to have seen more of.

Unpopular take. Never cared for Charlie. He whined way too much, and was often pretty thick and selfish - until his part of the story came to an end. Frank is also overrated on this sub. He contributed very very little to the story other than being the figurehead for a mode of transport and the odd sarcastic remark.

Will assume 90% of people will disagree as Redditors love to do. But still, let me know who’d be in your top tier.

Discussion Which Female would you say had the best backstory and who had the worst backstory?

Kate’s was the best for me. Loved how we found out she was the fugitive on the Plane and the whole Mystery of wondering what she did and then finally finding out about it then continuing on with her Connection to Sawyer by knowing Cassidy mixed with of course her love story with her Childhood Friend Tom. Say what you want about Kate but I did love learning more about her as the Show went on. The worst would be a tie between Shannon and Libby just cause Libby really didn’t have a flashback we just knew she knew Hugo from Santa Rosa and then Shannon only had one episode to tell her story and then she died so there really wasn’t much more to it then what we got.

Character Analysis Michael Emerson’s here-and-there pronunciations of “whhjy” and “whooen” elevate his acting

I don’t know how to write out the phonetics, but I hope you guys catch on what pronunciations I’m talking about.

The marking of the “wh” with a j-ey sound or a double O.

The fact that he not always pronounces like that, helps emphasize his scenes and deliveries when needing to mark his emotions or power dynamics.

Character Question I really miss Season 1 Locke

Hey, first-time Lost watcher here. I'm 5 episodes into Season 3 and this has been bothering me for a while.

I absolutely loved Locke in Season 1. He was such a great character and his dialogue was consistently excellent. He had this ability to understand people almost intuitively and help them grow. There was a certain contemplative depth to him that made him really compelling.

But since Season 2, especially with Eko around, I feel like Locke has gradually lost that side of himself. I like Eko but he doesn't quite fill the same space. Locke also seems to have become less central to the story and at this point I sometimes struggle to recognize the character I loved in Season 1.

For example when he goes after Eko in the bear cave and tells Charlie not to follow him because bad things happen to people who spend time with him. BRO WHAT. That sounds like something Hurley would say not Locke lmao.

The flashbacks feel a bit disconnected from his island storyline too. Him working on a cannabis farm? Okay, but what are we supposed to make of that in relation to what's happening on the island? And what was the point of that ending in the flashback? How does cleaning up a mess connect to saving Eko? It feels like a pretty flimsy thread holding the two storylines together.

I really hope things pick up again because Season 1 Locke was genuinely one of my favorite parts of the show. Does he ever regain some of that depth?
