[Pelissero] Colts are trading three-time Pro Bowl DL DeForest Buckner to the 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
r/Colts • u/TheAthletic • 4h ago
[James Boyd]: The Indianapolis Colts’ fire sale is officially underway. Who could be traded next?
Jonathan Taylor, RB
Unlike Nelson and Buckner, Taylor is not on an expiring deal. The star running back just signed a two-year, $44 million extension in August that keeps him under contract through 2028.
Being more than a half-year rental should make Taylor the Colts’ hottest commodity at the trade deadline, especially since the 27-year-old is still playing at a Pro Bowl level. Since entering the NFL in 2020, only Derrick Henry has more rushing yards than Taylor, and he’s on pace to rush for another 1,400-plus yards and 19 touchdowns this season.
Josh Downs, WR
Downs, 25, is in the final year of his four-year rookie deal. The 2023 third-round pick might seek a more stable quarterback situation and better offensive infrastructure if the Colts keep him past the trade deadline, which would allow him to become a free agent next summer.
Downs has shown flashes of being a game-changer in the slot, but his skill set is limited due to his size, at 5 feet 9, 171 pounds. He claimed he could play more outside this season.
However, without deep threat Alec Pierce, who is sidelined indefinitely with a left heel injury, it’s been harder for Downs to get open. He has recorded just 26 catches for 307 yards and zero touchdowns through seven games, but he’s still averaging a career-high 11.8 yards per reception.
Grover Stewart, NT
Stewart isn’t the club bouncer he used to be along the interior defensive line, but he’s still one of the better run stoppers in the NFL.
The 33-year-old is in the last year of a three-year, $39 million contract extension he signed in March 2024. Stewart has been remarkably durable, missing only eight games in 10 seasons. Six of those were because he served a six-game suspension in 2023 for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, which he said was an accident.
Stewart has never had any other trouble on or off the field since the Colts drafted him in the fourth round in 2017.

Discussion [James Boyd] #Colts RB Jonathan Taylor’s wife, Ayanna: “So, I’m out running errands when I see that Quenton Nelson has been traded to the Seattle #Seahawks . I’m sorry, what?!” “Will we make it to game day? Or was last week the last time my husband will be putting on a Colts jersey?”
x.comIt getting uneasy in the Taylor home.

Reminder: Christian McCaffrey was traded at 26 years old for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.
I want a first-round pick for JT as much as everyone else, but if he’s traded, I cant imagine we get more than a the McCaffrey package.
Caff did have some injury concerns at the time but team control years and percent of the salary cap obligations are pretty comparable.

Quality Post So Shane is basically getting fired at the end of the season?
Shit post Biggest wants this offseason?
Obviously whoever the GM is needs to figure out the QB situation, so I'm not going to talk about it.
My personal want is for them to go find a linebacker that can actually play, and lead this defense. Buckner, Zaire, Kenny Moore, Bynum, whoever you wanted to point to as leaders on the defensive side were great players (good/decent in Zaire's case), but this defense has been a mess since Shaq Leonard and Bobby Okereke left. Leonard was the last true guy we had on defense that we could count on to make a play in a big moment.
Ballard definitely struggled to find pass rushers, but was typically pretty good at drafting linebacker talent.. For that reason, and for the fact that Lou historically hates rookies, is the only reason I have some hope for CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher.. but we won't know if they are actually any good until the are consistently on the field.
Whoever takes over as GM will hopefully know what he has with them by the end of this year, and go get someone if they aren't the answer. I'm so sick of watching the linebackers be the worst group in the league. It's easy to blame the pass rush, but it all plays a factor. How many times over the last 3-4 years have you felt like it's a given they give up a slant over the middle on 3rd down? I expect it almost every time, and it's hard to blame the pass rush when the QB gets the ball out under 2 seconds because the middle of the field is just wide open.
Other than that, obviously I would love for them to find a premiere pass rusher to compliment what looks like a rising star in Tomi Adebawore. JTT has shown some flashes, and hopefully we see a heavy dose of Gumbs, and Curry for the rest of the year.
What's you're biggest want for a rebuild?

Hate to state the obvious but I’d be feeling a hell of a lot better about these moves if we had our 1st
