[Discussion] Finally played Mario Bros. 2 for the Famicon - I was disappointed

Post image
• Upvotes

I was pretty excited to get into the Famicon version of Mario Bros. 2, having played the American version for most of my life. Man, I hate to say I was really disappointed. The game relies on some cheap tricks to get you to lose lives and can be brutally hard.

Nintendo of America made the right choice in skipping it and just reskinning Doki Doki Panic. That game, while still being the oddball in the Mario franchise, is such a better game all around. What's the consensus here? If you've played both, which did you prefer?

[Help!] Pikachu Edition N64

My Pikachu Edition N64 is missing its Pokéball power switch. Was wondering if anyone knew where I could find an STL file online to 3D print it, or knew the dimensions of it so I can make one, OR does anyone have a broken version they are willing to sell parts for?

[Discussion] Best Plug and Play console with the highest number of games for 4K TV in Europe

I have been playing a lot of retro games since I was younger like the Super Mario series and the Sonic series and more, I'm looking for a retro all-in-one console with a European plug, with the highest number of games as possible, I'm looking for FPGA if possible, which is the best home choice, if you want to answer a handheld all-in-one one, I like about a big widescreen screen one, if not windscreen, please tell the screen ratio.

[Question] Do you listen to NES soundtracks outside of playing? What’s your go-to?

Do you put on NES music while working, coding, studying, running, or doing something else? Which soundtracks do you keep coming back to?

I’m also curious how you listen—YouTube playlists, music apps, dedicated websites, or local files?

And do you prefer a whole soundtrack playing through, or one favourite level theme looping for ages?

[Homebrew] Shockwave: I wrote an anti-gravity racer for the Vectrex, a vector console from 1982

The Vectrex has no frame buffer and no sprites—every line drawn costs brightness and flicker. Push past a hard hardware budget, and the picture wobbles.

A racer is a tough fit. Speed usually means drawing more, but here it means the opposite: finding the fewest lines that still read as a road rushing at you.

What worked was giving road segments their own perspective scaling and keeping the horizon fixed. Six track lines and two ships eat up most of the budget. Everything else—the banking, the near-misses, the sense of speed—comes from timing rather than extra geometry.

Clip is off real hardware, not an emulator. The edge flicker is the actual beam, which is part of why it feels fast.

Happy to go into the drawing routine if anyone's interested.

[Question] I’m not sure what to add to the collection¿

So I’ve been building my gaming collection for a while now, I don’t just collect I also play everything I’ve never added anything that didn’t work (I never understood why ppl did) and I got quite a good amount of games, a lot of modern and retro (I still have a huge backlog😭)
My dilemma is idk wether to get all versions of games, like I’ve been thinking I have an o.g Xbox so it feels required to own original Halo but I’m the type to get a whole series not just pick and choose so I’d have to get all of them however I own the Master chief collection
Before I would’ve just gotten the originals anyway but now I’ve been thinking on wether it’s worth it to have both versions
Another example is the metal gear solid collection which comes with the first 3 games in a bundle, idk if i should get a collection of them or try to find the original ones

I’ve notice retro/modern-ish games are getting re-releases and I’ve been one for playing the classics/originals for the feels yk
This is my issue idk if others had something similar but I guess I just wanted to vent a little and ask for advice 🤷‍♂️

[Help!] Help with retro gaming setup.

So I've just somewhat recently started collecting retro again after about a decade and want to get a setup going so I can play. After some research and disappointment knowing I threw my trinitron away all those years ago and seeing how expensive they've become I have decided to go the route connecting to my modern TV.

I have a megadrive, n64, ps1/2/4/5, gamecube and a couple of mini consoles. I expect I'll add a wii and xbox/360 and more aswell. My TV is a Sony model XR55A80JU.

My questions are as follows..

  1. Am I better off buying individual cables for each console or buying something like the retrotink 5x etc? (I have enough doubles to trade in so money isn't an issue per se)

  2. I want to eventually have every console set up ready to go so will need any splitters I'm already assuming a hdmi splitter at least?

  3. Will any specific cables provide better quality (I remember my megadrive cable stopped working so need a new one) or does that only matter when using a crt tv?

I appreciate any help and thankyou

[Discussion] The concept of a kill screen is quite interesting

Lately I was looking at that one design aspect of arcade games where if the player goes too far into the game, the game eventually crashes as it prevents the player from continuing.

One of my favorite games that uses that design choice is the original Donkey Kong as I read somewhere how going too far into the game basically causes the game’s timer to get so small that the game effectively becomes impossible to beat as I always wanted to learn how that works.

Hey everyone.

As a long-time redditor, I just wanted to say thanks. This is a genuinely good community, and I really appreciate the vibe all of you bring to it. So many subreddits are seemingly mean for no reason at all no matter what someone posts or comments, and it's nice that this one bucks that trend.

Let our shared love for retro games continue to help the community grow.

[Just a Thought] Interesting look at dithering on Sonic R on Sega Saturn

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

I recently picked up a Sega Saturn for $70 off FB Marketplace. While waiting to order my standard SCART cable from RetroAccess, I picked up a cheap Amazon SCART cable and a cheap Mcbazel S-Video/Composite cable to mess around with in the meantime.

I wanted to put together this quick educational post for anyone who might not be familiar with dithering in retro games and how dramatic of an impact your video signal choice has on how these titles actually look on different displays!

My Usual Setup vs. This Test

Normally, I’m a big fan of the razor-sharp image you get from SCART cables. My usual gaming setups range from a collection of consumer CRTs to high-end PVMs, as well as my retro consoles running through a RetroTINK 4K Pro into an LG C1 OLED. But testing this Saturn on a consumer tube was a great reminder of how signal clarity interacts with developer tricks.

What is Dithering?

In the 32-bit era, true hardware transparency and alpha blending were memory-intensive. Developers on platforms like the Saturn and Genesis frequently used dithering, a technique of alternating pixel grids (checkerboard patterns) of solid color vs. black, to simulate soft shadows, transparency, and color gradients. Dithering relied entirely on the signal degradation of 1990s composite video to blur those pixels together in your eyes.

The Comparison (Tested on Sonic R on a Toshiba CN36H96 CRT):

(Note: In an ideal test, I would eliminate the RetroTINK RGB2COMP transcoder from the chain entirely, but I didn't have any of my other TVs readily set up that could handle SCART natively. Still, this setup clearly illustrates the huge difference in signal handling!)

RGB (via SCART into RetroTINK RGB2COMP -> Component into CRT):

Result: Sonic’s shadow displays as a harsh, ultra-crisp checkerboard pattern with zero transparency effect. Because RGB provides clean, uncompressed color separation with no signal bleed, the optical illusion completely breaks down.

S-Video (Directly into the CRT):

Result: You can still easily make out the harsh checkerboard pattern. On a sharp display like this Toshiba CRT, S-Video retains enough clarity that the individual pixels don't smear enough to smooth out the shadow.

Composite (Directly into the CRT):

Result: The only signal where the dithering actually worked as the developers intended. The natural signal crosstalk and horizontal blur of composite smear adjacent pixels together, blending the grid into a smooth, translucent looking shadow.

It's a great example of how a "sharper signal" doesn't always equal the intended visual effect for every retro title, as high-end setups often expose the clever hardware workarounds of the era.

I still prefer the sharpness of SCART, but I usually always prefer it retro gaming on a CRT and when not playing on a CRT, but instead playing using my RetroTink 4K Pro to play on my OLED, I'm always applying CRT filters.

How do you prefer to play?

[Just a Thought] If you could choose a game for Nintendo to preserve on their digital retro consoles so new people can play it, which would it be?

Not sure if this is allowed here, no hard feelings if the mods nuke it.

Nintendo has their digital retro consoles on Switch/Switch 2. I wish desperately that they'd add Lufia: The Legend Returns, my favorite Gameboy game of all time. I love the notion of new people getting to discover it.

Chrono Trigger is the obvious SNES choice as well.

What would you pick?

[Discussion] For the past few days, my favorite hobby has been tinkering with a Windows 95 virtual drive emulated via DOSBox-X.

And having a blast of a time! Windows 95 is very nostalgic for me. That period from the mid-to-late1990s is, in a way, a "missing link" in gaming when it comes to Windows isn't? Naturally some most profitable titles are kept alive to this day by the companies that own them. As for games that also ran on DOS, DOSBox usually does a good job (much to the delight of digital storefronts that sell classic games). However, a great deal of software that relied on Windows 95 simply won't run on newer versions. For instance, my old Civilization 2 CD absolutely refuses to run on a 64-bit system. My Steam copy of Balls of Steel (with the Duke Nukem table) worked well until recently, but some stray Windows 11 update completely messed up its physics, rendering it unplayable. There are always blessed souls like Carl Norton (Carlmundo), who resurrected Worms 2 with his Worms 2 Plus patch (so I didn’t have to run it from a Windows 95 drive, yay). Or GOG user Crossgen116, thanks to whom I can once again enjoy the satisfaction of playing Interstate '76.

But officially or not, quite a few things ended up falling into a limbo. Like 'Lose Your Marbles', which Segasoft proclaimed "better than Tetris or your money back" (lol). Or my main objective for this endeavor: to play again that wonderful version of Puyo Puyo Tsuu — which is far superior to the arcade version — the way it was meant to be played.

And what about you people? Do you have a beloved game from the Windows 95/98/XP era that you can no longer play due to technical limitations?

[Discussion] Which video game franchise had the most profound impact?

If we were to look back at the history of video games and reflect upon the echelons of the hall of fame of the gaming world, and you could only pick ONE gaming franchise that has had the greatest impact and influence, whether for you personally or for the gaming industry at large, which one would you pick and why?

I feel like many people would choose between Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, arguably the top 3 in this list, which I would have no problem agreeing with. I personally played Pokemon and Mario, but haven't touched a single game of Zelda yet!

If you could pick only ONE, which one and why?Which video game franchise had the most profound impact?

u/ : lol nobody cares weirdo

b/: that sounds like a YOU problem?

[Article] Alien 3 Is Getting a Second Chance on the Amiga CD32, More Than 30 Years Later

I've written a little-little article about Alien 3 CD32 Edition, a new fan-made overhaul of the original Amiga game by Mister_Grave, featuring improved AGA graphics, parallax scrolling, reworked audio and a bunch of other enhancements.

What caught my attention was how it reminded me of the film itself, and the extraordinary lengths fans have gone to over the years to revisit and improve David Fincher's pretty troubled Alien 3. From the official Assembly Cut to fan restorations like the Legacy Cut, there's something fascinating to me about how people keep returning to this particular entry in the series.

This is not my usual space to write articles, but I've been having fun with NeoCities these last few weeks, and this one felt pretty appropriate to go there. I just go into the new CD32 version, what's changed, and why I think there's an interesting connection between the game and the film's complicated history.

I have no doubt all of you here are far more expert on the topic and know the game already, but for anyone interested, here it is!
