Hi reddit,
I'm a 30-year-old woman living with my parents, and I'm struggling with feeling like I have no control over my own life.
I previously worked in a government job, but I eventually reached a point where the stress became too much. At the time, I was also in an extremely toxic relationship that drained me emotionally. I made the difficult decision to leave both the relationship and my job because I needed to get myself back to a healthier place. I also live with a mental health condition, which has influenced some of the challenges I've faced.
Currently, I'm living in a small room at my parents' house and working a government contract job. My parents are very protective of me, but sometimes it feels as though they still see me as a child rather than a 30-year-old woman who needs the freedom to make her own decisions.
My parents believe I should finish my current contract before pursuing permanent employment. However, I've already had opportunities to interview for permanent positions, and they've discouraged me from accepting them because they want me to complete my contract first.
I understand that their concerns probably come from what happened with my previous job. They worry about whether I'll be able to manage independently, given how things unfolded in the past. But I feel like I'm being judged by my past rather than being given the opportunity to show that I've learned and grown from those experiences.
The reality is that I desperately want to move out and build a life of my own. I want financial independence, my own space, and the freedom to make decisions without feeling monitored or needing permission. At the same time, I don't currently have the financial stability to move out comfortably, so I'm stuck between wanting independence and needing to be realistic about my circumstances.
It's frustrating because I feel old enough to navigate my own life, make mistakes, learn from them, and take responsibility for my choices. I don't expect everything to be perfect, but I want the chance to prove to myself that I can do this.
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
How do you establish boundaries with parents who are genuinely concerned about you but whose protectiveness is starting to feel controlling? How do you begin building independence when you don't yet have the financial means to leave?
I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have had to rebuild their lives after a difficult period with their mental health and have eventually managed to become independent.
I don't want to make another impulsive decision just because I'm unhappy. I want to make a realistic plan that allows me to move forward without feeling as though my life is on hold indefinitely.
