University math 104 vs 110

• Upvotes

i’m debating on which math class to take next sem, I’m currently taking 113 as my first upper div and doing fine in it. Got an A in 55 and A+ in 54. I’m inclined towards taking 104 because I’ve heard lots of negative things abt the prof teaching 110 next semester, but I’m also worried that 104 would be too hard, especially since i’ll be taking eecs 126 together with it. How much harder is 104 compared to 110 and 113? If I take 104 I’ll probably be taking it with zhenhao li (he is new I think, so I can’t find any reviews on him, and this seems to be the case for most of the 104 instructors for next semester)

Politics go register + vote YES on RTM to save BART and avoid massive cuts!

summary: if RTM doesn't pass (it's polling really close), BART service will be cut 70% + AC transit bus service cut. go vote, you can still register in person!

Currently, BART + local transit (ie AC transit buses) are facing major service cuts next year. There is a ballot measure RTM (Regional Transit Measure) that will prevent these cuts by adding a 0.5% sales tax (excludes groceries, utilities) to fund transit

If RTM doesn't pass:

  • 70% cuts to BART, 15 stations closed, all of BART closes 9pm
  • cuts to local transit (including AC transit buses)
  • Red line (line to SF) will be reduced to only during peak hours (currently is all day)
  • service to Oakland decreases to 1 orange train every 30 minutes
  • traffic will be ass (BART estimates westbound morning traffic would increase 73%) due to transit riders now on the road

voting info (voting day is TUESDAY, a week from today)

  • how to vote: for a student who hasn’t registered yet: go to eshleman and register + vote there. if you have the ballot, drop if off at a box asap
  • on campus: this lists 312 eshleman hall as its campus early-voting / election-day site for this election. it’s open oct 31–nov 2, 9am–5pm, and nov 3, 7am–8pm
  • even if you're registered at home, it literally takes like 15 mins to show up there, register, and vote

it's actually really close right now: only 48% say voting yes in polls. we need over 50% for RTM to pass

in conclusion,

  • YES on RTM! go register + vote! save bart!

University Easiest 4 unit course?

Any recs for the easiest 4-unit course at Berkeley? I'm taking a pretty heavy workload (3 tech courses at 3 units each) as an ORMS major, and I need an easy 4-unit course to meet the 13-unit threshold.

Other Math 16B with Emiliano Gomez — workload, exams, and advice?

Hey everyone!

I’m looking into taking Math 16B with Emiliano Gomez and wanted to see if anyone here has taken his class before. Should I take it next sem or gamble and pray for a "better" prof fall 2027? Thoughts & opinions?

Events/Organizations East Bay 40+ Events Discord Group

Hi Everyone,

Some time ago there was a thread in r/bayarea that ended up going crazy with comments and one of the things that came up was that people wanted a place where those who were our age, 40ish+, and who maybe were a bit more introverted could meet other people in the east bay to be friends with go to events with, etc.

I will clearly state here. This is not a dating thing. If you meet someone and hit it off then fuckin A I'll send you a toaster at your wedding, but don't be creepy.

So far we are 120ish strong and the chat is getting going and people are feeling each other out.

I would love for anyone who feels like they would like this group to join, BUT I would love for people who have events they are hosting, outings they would love to invite people to, and more to join so we can all share that East Bay Love!

Got an art exhibit coming up? We have a channel for that. Advertise the hell out of it!

Got a podcast? Post that shit! We'll drop some follows and pump those #s up!

Come and meet your fellow 40+ East Bay residents and find some cool stuff to do!!

(Note: It's fine if you are in your 30s.)

Link to join! https://discord.gg/YgUR5re94x

rmp gives me hella mixed reviews for each. one review is a 5 and the next review is a 1 like what.

if it depends on my studying/chem knowledge, im willing to put some time in this class. im finding chem 1a really chill right now as i took chem in highschool but i know NOTHING about ochem. i also really need a good grade...

mainly prioritizing the grade tbh. but i dont want to drown myself in work to get to it yk?

University masds and other master's programs

hi!! i'm a second year undergrad at ucsd studying math+cs, graduating at the end of this year.

i'm looking to apply to a master's program at berkeley (in particular, i'm looking at the MASDS program). however, given my circumstances, i don't have any internship or much research experience, and my letter of recommendations are somewhat mediocre. i do have high course rigor and a flawless gpa however, if that means anything.

i'm really not sure if i have a super good chance at MASDS and everyone i've asked seems to not know. could anyone with any knowledge about this whole process give me some insight on this topic?? and if i'm not qualified enough for MASDS, are there some alternative programs at berkeley that could be a bit easier to get into and still fit my profile? any sort of suggestion or information would help me a ton at this point, even if it's only tangentially related.

thank you guys so much :)))))

University I’ve been trying to recover my alumni email for 2 years but I get harassed for donations in weekly calls, letters, and emails instead

Post image
24 Upvotes

I’ve had my alumni email for multiple years after graduating, but was inactive during a stretch of time traveling / working and missed emails about its proposed deletion.

My childhood photos, documents, job prep, and 4 years of coursework were all on that unlimited drive storage which I wasn’t able to recover before I lost access. I’ve been trying to recover my alumni email for 2 years emailing and calling every department I could find, and always get rerouted or rejected outright.

Yet simultaneously, I get spammed by weekly calls, letters, and emails from the university asking me to donate - finally saw today’s text and sent this. I wonder if I’ll finally either hear back about my alumni email or if they’ll finally stop harassing me 😔 at this point I’m willing to pay for my alumni email just to get my files back.

Edit: Some commenters are completely missing the point of my post: I know the students aren’t tech support 💀 I wasn’t asking the student to recover it themselves. I was asking whether they could connect me with someone at the university who could actually help, since I’ve spent two years trying to find the right person. I’m not upset that they asked me for a donation; the irony is that the university has been very successful at contacting me for donations while I’ve been unable to get a response about this longstanding issue.

University DSP Reasons - Likelihood of Getting DSP

What are some common reasons to apply to DSP? I see people complain about it being lax and people giving bs reasons to get in. I'm assuming those people are saying things like anxiety or depression? What would the documentation needed and how long does it take to get approved?

University Stern Hall

I'm a spring transfer, and I received a housing offer for a double at Stern Hall. I wanted to hear about other people's experiences living there. I've heard that it's very quiet, which I don't mind at all since I'm introverted and love having a quiet space. However, I'd love to know more about a few things, such as the age range of residents (I'm 22 and would love to live with people closer to my age), the overall quality of life, and general cost of living. I'm also curious about how easy it is to make friends, since I struggle in that department, lol. I'd love to hear from other transfer students, but if you're not a transfer and have experience living at Stern Hall, I'd love to hear from you, too. Thank you :)

University transfer @ berkeley

Is anyone else having a difficult time making friends here? I’m a transfer student and this is my first semester here and I have yet to make a single friend that I could hang out with outside of work, clubs, or class. I work on campus, I’m in one club, full time student, and I’m constantly at the rsf so you’d think I’d make some sort of connection with someone that would stick. I’m hoping to make some friends this weekend with halloween events though so wish me luck.
just posting to see if anyone relates

University Doubling Data science + environmental economics and policy?

Hey I’m tryna figure out a double major going into my second semester sophomore year. I’m currently data science and was wondering if eep would be good to double with especially with the rise of ai in the future because I’ll have a background in programming as well as environmental policy and I feel like that could be good for the future job market as well as Econ so I can have a finance background. please let me know any tips or advice yall have!
