Born and raised in Berkeley. Stayed in Monterey Market and the original Berkeley Bowl as a kid.
Took my adult son with me to grab somethings from Monterey Market. Didn't know they started checking receipts at the door. Wouldn't have been able to tell either.
Noticed a lady standing there as people with bags and carts left out. Didn't see her stop anyone. Didn't see her ask for a receipt.
Until my self and my son, only outwardly appearing black shoppers, were leaving. Smh
We were reached across by people, and stepped over in the most dismissive rude ways. Berkeley is a shell of itself.
Edit to ADD:
What I don't think is being understood or was well conveyed from my original post:
The employee checking receipts standing at the exit. I actually observed for more than a passing moment. As I waited for my son to finish chatting with someone and catch up. And when I noticed her apron and realized she worked there. I wondered the purpose of her station. And while all this is occurring people were coming and going, no one was stopped for a receipt. She nodded good bye to some folks. No one was holding a receipt up to be checked. Just passing her by.
Which is why when we were stepped infront of and directly asked for a receipt upon leaving. I became aware they HAD started checking receipts and noted that I HADN'T SEEN ANYONE ELSE GET CHECKED during MY OWN visit TODAY
