DISCUSSION Clark and Lana’s final goodbye sucks Spoiler

Post image
99 Upvotes

On my third, or fourth maybe, rewatch of the series and I hate CLana’s final goodbye more and more each time, it was a fine goodbye at the end of S7, with Lana leaving because she was moving on, and Clark eventually starting to move on on his own as well as slowly but steadily falling for Lois, all for Crybaby Lang to appear out of the blue and Clark is a clumsy, angsty highschooler again. Man it sucks so bad.

DISCUSSION Michael Rosenbaum Set the Bar Too High for Zod

I loved Michael Rosenbaum as Zod at the end of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6. He had that commanding, intimidating presence you’d expect from a Kryptonian general. His fight with Clark in the Season 6 premiere was fantastic, and “Kneel before Zod” was the icing on the cake.

Callum Blue just didn’t work for me in the same way. His Zod often comes across as whiny and petulant, almost like he’s perpetually on the verge of tears. I struggle to buy him as a major commanding his army, and I never found him particularly intimidating next to Clark. No disrespect to Blue, but I just didn’t feel that same sense of authority or menace.

Even with my issues with Man of Steel, Michael Shannon gave us a much more convincing Zod. Smallville got so much right with Michael’s Lex Luthor and James Marsters’ Brainiac, but I think Zod was a missed opportunity. I wasn’t particularly sold on Davis Bloome or the Doomsday monster either, but Zod disappointed me the most.

Maybe Rosenbaum simply set the bar too high, but his Zod was genuinely terrifying. Callum Blue’s? Pretty mid, IMO.

And I know that he’s a clone from before 20 years from the destruction of Krypton but still. They should’ve had him play it differently or cast a more intimidating/commanding actor.

QUESTION Da hell is this

Post image

I'm currently watching Smallville on Amazon Prime and just finished the 11th episode, which was unusually long at almost 1.5 hours. However, when I moved on to the 12th episode, it turned out to be the same episode but only 40 minutes long. I'm not sure if this is a glitch or something. What should I do?

DISCUSSION Clark and Lana wouldn’t have worked out, even if she hadn’t absorbed kryptonite.

Post image
• Upvotes

Clark and Lana never admitted how hard their relationship actually was. I know that they both felt it, and that tragic goodbye felt just like that, like they were being forced apart. But if you really think about it in retrospect, they could have found a way out of it. They could have. And they didn't voice what they were truly feeling and the reason why they chose to let it happen. The writers just kind of left us with a tragic ending. And a lot of younger people, maybe people who are seeing the show for the first time, interpret that goodbye as a sort of Romeo and Juliet moment. But it wasn’t that because breaking up was a choice. Being around Lana has hurt Clark, and it always did. And that's the point. It has been that way since season one. She was wearing kryptonite around her neck. And while that’s not her fault and she didn’t know, it’s a metaphor for how Lana literally IS Clark’s kryptonite and how being around her emotionally drains him. And I think it’s kind of poetic that the relationship ended the way that it started, Lana’s kryptonite hurting Clark. And in the end, it was just a more permanent version of that kryptonite necklace. And it honestly couldn't have been less of a shitty script that the actors were given. Because the breakup shouldn’t have been so tragic, and it should’ve offered closure. Clark and Lana should have been more honest about why they couldn't continue the relationship. And it wasn't because of no kryptonite blood. It was because they had BOTH been hurting each other emotionally, intended or not. They could have worked through it, but they didn't. They didn't because they were exhausted of each other. And they knew that it wasn't a healthy relationship. None of them wanted to say it because if they said it, then that would make everything that they went through seem futile and pointless, and like they were wasting their time trying to save something that was already dying.

But I guess what I’m trying to say is: they aren’t good for each other and the goodbye that they had should have been written differently. Even if they were both human, they’re not meant to be. I think some people have a hard time accepting that, but I understand because the ending is very hard to interpret.

Im not trying to say that I hate Clana, because honestly, there’s something beautiful about their tragic relationship. It teaches us that the right kind of passion shouldn’t feel like you’re slowly dying for one of those “good” moments. Love shouldn’t feel black and white, it should feel golden. Like it is with Clark and Lois.

What do you guys think?

DISCUSSION The reason why Clark didn’t tell anyone about his powers

Post image
• Upvotes

In the show, Clark will have a lot of reasons for why he “can’t tell this person yet.”

Those reasons would be:

-It could put that person in danger
-They might tell others
-What if they don’t accept it?

I think that the main reason Clark doesn’t want to tell anyone is because Clark doesn’t accept HIMSELF.

Throughout the whole show, Clark does things to try feel more ‘normal’ or ‘human.’ You can see it in his eyes, the look of sadness and existential dread he always harbors. He resents being different and voices this many times, especially in the earlier seasons.

But Clark’s friends and family continue to support him no matter what and have proven again and again their loyalty. Despite this, he feels like he can’t tell them and this frustrates viewers.

Kara has no problem flaunting her powers, and not because she doesn’t understand the ‘danger’ of doing that. It’s because she is proud of her kryptonian heritage.

Clark never tells anyone directly because he doesn’t even want to acknowledge that having powers is apart of him. He wants to pretend it doesn’t exist and create a whole separate identity, not just to draw away suspicion, but to make him FEEL like he’s normal.

Clark denies his destiny again and again in Smallville and that affects his confidence when it comes to sharing his secret. Even with people he KNOW would understand, he doesn’t want to tell because he hates that he is Kryptonian and that it is a part of him.

It’s not until the later seasons that Clark visibly gains confidence because he’s not just accepted himself, he’s embraced himself.

He’s able to tell Lois the truth because through finding himself, he found HER and saw her clearly for the first time.

Lois uplifts Clark and makes him want to embody Kal-El because she doesn’t treat him like a burden or a superior, but as a partner.

In the end, Clark still hides his secret, but he doesn’t hide it like he’s ashamed of it. That’s the biggest difference between season one Clark and season ten Clark.

It’s perfect. Everything about it.

DISCUSSION I have finished Smallville season 4 and am done with the High School arc, so here's my review/thoughts.

General thoughts: All around it was good, but like the other high school seasons, it's not without it's problems.

Clark: (Note: This is based on episodes 1-20). Clark this season was good. After spending a lot of season 3 angsting, season 4 kinda fixed that by having him be a regular teenage Superman. First was his short arc with football, which had a nice end and helped Clark feel like the future Superman he'll become. Next was him and Lois, which is leagues better then Lana and Choice, purely because they FUCKING HATE EACH OTHER! Which aside from being funny seeing as these two will become endgame, means we won't have to worry about the love triangle becoming a love square. Episode 21 Update: Nothing. Finale update: He's in the north pole now, does this mean what I think it means?

Lana: (Note: This is based on episode 1-20). Lana was alright but her storyline was super disappointing so far. Mainly because of the witch stuff, which felt like a very bad silver age comic being dragged out for 5 years like the Clone Saga, and her romance of cancer with Clark is like american politics. Boring! Ass! Shit! Although her episode with the fast aging kid she raises with Clark was super sweet and gave me hope for these two. But why is she mad at Lex for firing a pedophila, I know she's a teenager, but come on. Episode 21 Update: Nothing big, but Jesus the gore. Finale update: Oh, her and Clark are a thing now? Again?

Lex: Is still the goat, the legend, the best character, and my favorite! Between him and his Father's new dynamic with Riddler reformed, to the clone episode letting us see how evil he could and will be, to... the kiss with Lana... "sigh", FYI, Lex is 24 or 25 in season 4, while he has known Lana since she was 14. And with Jensen Ackles... oh, wait, yeah, that's right! He outed a pedophila! Lex Based Luthor, am I right? Also, I'm writing this after episode 20, so I'll write down what happened in episodes 21 and 22 before posting this hahaha! Episode 21 Update: So the Ackles plotline is finished. Finale update: Guy has gone almost full on villain and is trying to take another man's woman! Lex "Cuck" Luthor, am I right?

Jensen Ackles: (Note: This is based on episodes 1-20). Pete's replacement in the season 4 intro and like Pete... this guy was underwhelming. Aside from just being there to add fuel to Clark's and Lana's cancer of love that is there romance, and having some shit going on with his mother, some witches, Lana, and pulling a Kamoshida Persona 5 and DATING A STUDENT! WHY???? He was fucking meh, and felt like The Boys season 5 when it came to wasting JENSEN FUCKING ACKLES! I didn't even call him Jason, just Jensen Ackles. Episode 21 Update: Oh, now he's dead, lol. Finale: wait he's alive oh wait he might actually be dead this time lol.

Choice: Was a far better character than in seasons 2 and 3. They cut back on the crush Clark, she finally learns Clark has powers, her connection with Lois is honestly great, and she's all around just much better written. Hopefully this continues into season 5 and beyond. Finale update: Didn't do much but might tell Lex about Clark's powers, who knows.

Riddler Luthor: The De facto main and best villain, speending the first half in prison, and swapping bodies with Clark, (which was a great episode for Tom's and Golver's acting skills, btw), to spending the second half out of prison and reformed too. His dynamic with Lex is still going strong, and that scene in episode 20 with Ackles's mother. Chief's kiss! It really shows that despite being reformed, and revealing he really does love Lex, Riddler is still a villain at the end of the day. Episode 21 Update: He killed Jensen Ackles! That Bastard!

MARTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Was fucking awful this season, purly because of the Unsafe arc. I mean come on, bitch! Your son was raped and you're reading him the riot act about marraige?! Go die in a hole for all I care, it's disgusting how SA is treated in this show.

Jontham: He's been getting better and better every season, season 4 is no exception. Aside from that shit during the date rape arc, he improved a lot this season. Him and Clark having a fight in episode 21 about Clark's choice of college felt really real and down to earth, and the talk with Martha was both heartwarming and tearjerking. I sadly know he's dying next season cause I watched a smallvile video years ago. It was my Movie Flame.

Lois: Lois was a fun character this season. She was really likable, her connection to Choice is great, the fact her and Clark hate their absolute guts yet have to live together, it's honestly the best version of the ship aside from the DCU. And knowing the show ends with their wedding (Again blame Movie Flame), it's just the best romance in the show aside from Lex and Clark. (We all know people ship them)

Unsafe/Date rape/Victim blaming/FUCK THIS PART: Smallville has a serious SA problem! There is so much forced kissing in this show it makes it feel like one of the show's writers has a teen age rape fetish and Unsafe is the worst one I've seen! First Clark is drugged by and is forced to make out with a girl who tired to kill someone! After that, MARTHA!!! goes on some speech what Marriage although Clark had any choice in the matter, and the episode tired gaslighting us into thinking Clark was in the wrong even though HE WAS FUCKING RAPED!!! WHAT WERE THEY SMOKING?! THE SAME PEOPLE BEHIND THE STUPID LOVE SUBPLOTS?! THE NOT-FUCKING MYXLPLYX EPISODE? IS THIS SERIOUSLY WHAT MEN GETTING RAPED STORIES PEOPLE THINK OF?! WHY! WHY!! WHY!!!???

Krypto: HE'S SO FUCKING CUTE!

Graduation: A lot less graduation focused and more on the death, huh? Also, wow this show has a budget. Think they used this much budget on actual good character writing but hey I don't make the rules.

Closing Thoughts: So all around it was good, but it wasn't peak or anything. But I've been told seasons 1-4 are the worst seasons of the show so I better get ready for peak after this. Hopefully no more SA but I can't be that hopeful. 8/10.

DISCUSSION What is the ship thing

I've been diving into the Smallville fandom for a few months now, and I've noticed something really puzzling. I'm enjoying the show and have just reached season 9, but I can't help but see this intense divide among fans, especially when it comes to shipping.

It feels like there's so much passion around pairings like Clana, Clois, and Oliver and Lois, but at the same time, there's a lot of negativity towards these ships and their supporters. I see comments and discussions about how some fans believe there shouldn't be debates over these ships at all, which makes me even more confused.

Why is there such a strong aversion to certain ships? Is it just personal preference, or is there more to it? It really seems like some fans take it personally if someone supports a different pairing, and I can't wrap my head around why that is. It would be great to hear others' thoughts on this!
