Comics Kara is the most innocent and honest in the Super-family. Perhaps because she wasn't raised on Earth.

Question Intelligence/education

Does anyone else think the CW show seriously underestimates Kara’s intelligence?
I’ve been rewatching Supergirl and something has been bothering me more and more: the way the show portrays Kara’s scientific/technical intelligence sometimes seems completely inconsistent with her established background.
I’m not saying Kara should be smarter than Winn at everything. Winn is an extremely intelligent Earth technologist, and it makes perfect sense that he’d be better than Kara at certain areas of Earth-specific computing, hacking, engineering, etc. My issue is that the show sometimes portrays Kara as if she has basically no scientific or technical knowledge unless Winn explains it to her.
That doesn’t really make sense when you consider what we know about Kara.
Kara was born and raised on Krypton and received a Kryptonian education. At one point in the CW show, she mentions that Kryptonian children are doing advanced calculus at around four years old. Kara didn’t leave Krypton until she was around 13, meaning she potentially had another nine years of increasingly advanced education after already reaching the point where she was learning advanced calculus.
And Krypton wasn’t just another civilization. It was vastly more technologically and scientifically advanced than modern Earth.
On top of that, Kara wasn’t from some random family. She was the daughter of Zor-El, a prominent Kryptonian scientist. So she presumably grew up around scientific thinking and advanced technology from an early age.
Then she comes to Earth and gets an Earth education and spends years living with the Danvers family. Alex is a scientist/biologist, and Eliza and Jeremiah are also scientists. Kara therefore has basically spent her entire life surrounded by advanced science and scientists from two different civilizations.
Yet there are scenes where the show makes her seem strangely helpless with basic scientific reasoning.
The one that really got me was the scene where Kara sends Winn a water sample. Winn analyzes it and tells her that it’s an advanced chemical compound, then explains what the compound does without even really giving Kara the compound’s actual identity/composition.
And I’m sitting there thinking:
Why wouldn’t he just tell Kara what the compound is?
Kara has an Earth education. She knows chemistry. She grew up on Krypton learning science at an absurdly advanced level. If Winn gave her the molecular composition or structure, she should at least be able to reason about its properties herself, even if Winn knows more about the specific Earth technology involved.
There’s a huge difference between:
“I don’t recognize this Earth technology.”
and
“I don’t understand the scientific principles involved.”
The first makes perfect sense for Kara. The second often doesn’t.
I actually think the show could have had a much better dynamic between Kara and Winn. Winn could be the Earth technology/computer expert, while Kara could have an enormous amount of Kryptonian scientific knowledge that Winn doesn’t possess. Sometimes Winn teaches Kara about Earth technology, and sometimes Kara completely blindsides Winn with something she learned on Krypton.
That would make both characters look intelligent.
Instead, it sometimes feels like Winn has to be made the “smart one” by making Kara temporarily forget that she’s an incredibly well-educated Kryptonian who was exposed to advanced science from early childhood.
And this isn’t even about giving Kara some ridiculous “IQ of 200” just because she’s Kryptonian. We don’t have a canon IQ number for her. I’m talking about education, accumulated knowledge, and demonstrated ability to learn advanced concepts.
Kara has essentially been educated by two civilizations.
So I’m curious what other people think:
Am I overthinking this, or does the CW show genuinely undersell Kara’s intelligence in order to make characters like Winn and Alex fill the exposition/science roles?
I’d especially like to hear from people who know the comics/Kryptonian lore better than I do. Is Kara generally portrayed as more scientifically/intellectually capable outside the CW show, or is this just how she’s usually characterized?

Discussion What do you love the most about Supergirl ?

I'm not the most knowledgable on comics but I'd say I like the fact that she's an actual alien compared to Superman who was raised on Earth - as in, she was born and raised on Krypton, her life and opinions were molded by her experiences there and she remember its destruction

Question How do you feel about the DCU using Kara's Silver Age origin instead of her Post-Crisis origin?

Honestly, not a fan. I'm used to Kara being older than Clark, but becoming younger because of reasons (time dilation, stasis in her pod, or stuck in the Phantom Zone), as that is how it is in every other iteration.

Even Woman of Tomorrow, which the movie is loosely based on, has her older than Clark.

It just adds more to her character. Her baby cousin who she was supposed to take care of, grew up and is now older than her; being raised by people who most likely did a better job than she probably would have.

It's my biggest issue with the DCU version of Supergirl.

Hell, even Barry Allen had an origin change after Crisis. Pre-Crisis, both his parents were alive and well. Post-Crisis, his mother was killed by the Reverse Flash and his father was framed for it; and that origin stuck. It's now just integral to his character, just like Kara's Post-Crisis origin.

The Post-Crisis origin gives her an interesting dynamic with her once-younger-now-older cousin, who she used to babysit and take care of when he was an infant. She lived on Krypton while he only heard stories of it from the Fortress archives. However accurate those archives are about Krypton, they feel impersonal. When Clark meets her, he finds someone who lived there and tells him stories about his home planet; someone who makes it feel real.

With her being younger than him in this universe and only growing up on a chunk of Krypton, they lose that fun dynamic; with him just being her older cousin, full stop. And even she doesn't know Krypton fully, just hearing stories about it from the other Kryptonians around her.

Well, these were my thoughts. Feel free to tell me yours.

Discussion Recently, we've been lucky to get diverse takes on Supergirl as a character. Which has been your favorite? I really liked Kara in My Adventures With Superman. She has a connection to Krypton much different from her cousin's, and that creates a character that's comedic, tragic and inspiring.

VIDEO: What if SUPERGIRL (1984) was GOOD?

After Superman's third cinematic outing, audiences were introduced to the Man of Steel's cousin in the ill-fated 1984 spin-off.
Staffed by industry pros and promising newcomers, the resulting film somehow lacks any coherence or basic storytelling sense, and thus Supergirl was banished from the big screen for decades.
But what if, following a revamped SUPERMAN III where the girl of steel could make a proper debut, her first solo adventure received a heavy rewrite and more room to breathe?

Artwork Kara Zor-El & Toyman (FANCAST!!) plus a bit of info on some character changes and personality of Toyman! 💥⚙️

Art drawn by me!!

Okay so, there are some things I changed about him. So I went for steam-punk with 1800s toymaker!
Also he's a heavy drinker. He drinks to forget of his childhood traumas while also trying to remember the positives of his past as well (it doesn't work) so he's actually angry lol
Now the most obvious thing is that he's younger than the usual Toyman look (early 50s/late 40s) idk I just wanted to lol. Also he's played by Jeremy Jordan because in CW supergirl, his character's father, is ToyMan so it's basically one big call back to the show.
I have more stuff to say but it'll be a too long on this post, so l'll say more on a different post but for now this is it. I hope ya'll like him
But I will answer any questions about him like his design and things like that!
Hate comments will be reported. I don't play, i'm not dealing with jerks rn.

OH AND HE HAS A SPLIT PERSONALITY DISORDER. ONE PERSONALITY IS HIS CHILDISH MIND. THE OTHER IS HIS ADULT!!

I love the dynamic between Ruthye and Kara

Post image
72 Upvotes

I've seen Supergirl over 20 times, and one of the film's most beautiful aspects is the dynamic between Kara and Ruthye. Kara risks everything to prevent Ruthye, who is driven by revenge and wants to kill Krem, from falling into the abyss she would if she killed Krem. Kara takes on the dirty work and carries the burden on her shoulders. A true heroine.

Ruthye wants revenge, and Kara is doing everything she can to stop her. I love this aspect of Kara so much.
