Hey everyone. I'm preparing to run a Worldseeker Wizard in an upcoming game and have been reading up on the Planar Ally spells in preparation. Exactly how it works and how much control you get over the outsider you call is giving me some trouble.
The flavor of the class is as such: the Worldseeker wizard has a experience walking the planes, and dealing with outsiders. This allows him to call outsiders with the Planar Ally spell, like a cleric would, rather than just planar binding (which is what wizards traditionally do).
Now a cleric makes sense: she beseeches her god for an outsider, and the deity sends one. The deity should understand the cleric's need and send something appropriate for the task at hand, likely of the same alignment or a close one at least (ie. Iomedae might send an angel or agathion, or maybe even an aeon if the situation called for it).
But how would this work for a wizard who a) is an atheist, or b) maybe worships a deity but isn't all that serious about it. The planar ally spell says
If you serve no particular deity, the spell is a general plea answered by a creature sharing your philosophical alignment
Which to me seems more restrictive. It seems to say that a CG wizard can only get CG outsiders responding. The spell also says
If you know an individual creature's name, you may request that individual by speaking the name during the spell (though you might get a different creature anyway).
But what counts as knowing a creature's name? Is this specifically their True Name?
Now what about a wizard that worships a deity, lets say Desna. Is that enough to treat this like a cleric where you could feasibly get other, non-CG outsiders?
Overall I get that the DM is meant to be the stand-in for the deity and make a choice here, I'm just wondering if there's more RAW rules about this sort of thing I'm missing.
EDIT:
One final question I have that I forgot. The final bit of text in the spell reads:
Due to cleric spell alignment restrictions, if a cleric with an outsider subdomain wanted to create a calling diagram to improve her chances, she could enlist the aid of another caster to cast the required magic circle spell.
This confuses me greatly. The Magic Circle spell is referenced as being an option for Planar Binding, keeping the outsider in place until an agreement is reached, but this seems to go against what Planar Ally is about. Also what is this about it requiring an outsider subdomain?
