Showcase Cross Reddit Collab : Audio Visualization Monthly Megathread - Post a track / inspire a video.

Hi all, /r/vjing mod here:

I'm trying something new to spur some creative collaborations across reddit music production subs and visual art / creative coding / new media subreddits.

Now that Reddit supports video comments / replies, I thought it could be a fun opportunity to a collaboration call / response format.

The idea:

Musicians, dj's, producers or anyone musically inclined: post a link to a track or mix that you have rights to and are open to having visual accompaniment to.

VJs / live visualists / creative coders: post a response to a track that inspired you with a video comment, or link to an interactive experiment you made!

If you are an AV Act that makes your own music or video, feel free to post here too for inspiration.

All genre's, styles, techniques, skill levels are welcome.

This isnt a contest!

There's nothing to win (unless anyone knows sponsors haha) other than learning of new musical or visual act, meeting a potential collaborator and making awesome stuff and having a good time:

Stay curious and creative!

Below are some subs I'll be cross posting / sharing this with - feel free to cross post to any i've missed:

Music Subs:

Visual Subs:

Mod's of any of the above subs - sorry if this comes across as spammy!

I thought about asking permission from each of ya'll but that felt onerous and slow (ask forgiveness etc etc). If you have suggestions or any feedback do not hesitate to reach out! Was thinking of something like this monthly pinned on /r/vjing where i have video comments enabled - would love if yall could help spread the word!

Discussion Flair cleanup is live (trial) + New Rules

The poll passed, 21 of 26 for the full version, so it's live now as a trial. If you want the background, here's the original thread. Pick new flairs from:

  • Discussion
  • Question / Help
  • Showcase
  • Loops / Clips
  • Realtime / Generative
  • Projection Mapping
  • Analog
  • Hardware
  • Software / Tools

The (not so very) old AI, Commercial/Promo and Open Source/Free flairs are retired. That moves into the title now, via two tags: [Promo] and [AI]; the reason for this is that a post can't have multiple flairs.

The new rules

Tag anything for sale: [Promo] If your post sells or monetises anything (paid app/plugin, commissions, store links, Patreon, donations), put [Promo] in the title. Untagged promo may be held for review or removed. This isn't anti-selling but keeps promotional content visible.

Your own app/suite: one post per month Sharing a tool you made (paid or free, including vibecoded projects) is limited to one post per 30 days per person. Talking about other people's tools (Resolume, VDMX, TouchDesigner, indie tools made by others, etc.) is not limited; post about those freely.

Flag AI-made work: [AI]

If a post shows content that has a significantly AI-generated component to it, add [AI] to the title so people know what they're looking at before they click. This is especially required when you're also promoting/selling it. AI-made and AI-assisted work is welcome here, but flag it. This includes (but is not limited to) vibe-coded materials, vibe-assisted materials, gen-ai content with manual edits etc.

////

AI work is welcome, made or assisted, no problem with it. If you're just sharing a project or messing about with something new, the only real asks are to flag it if there's a significant AI component, and to add [Promo] if you're selling or allow for donations .

///

We are also experimenting with automod/modbot. There's also a report option now for promo that goes up untagged, and automod will quietly flag posts that look like they're missing a tag so we can take a look. It won't remove anything on its own, a person still checks first.

///

It's a trial, same as last time. If the wording's off or something feels wrong, stick it in the comments and we'll sort it. Cheers.

Software / Tools 👋 Ten minutes for a website study, first impressions wanted (unpaid, anonymous)

 [Promo]

Hi all. I work in marketing at Ventuz Technology, and we want to find out how our website reads to people who work with projection, screens and show control. I am deliberately not saying what we do. The site should tell you that, and whether it does is the whole point of the study.

How it works: you open the site, look around for a few minutes, then answer a short questionnaire. Anonymous, about ten minutes, in English. You do not need to know the company. First impressions are what we are after.

Question / Help First VJ gig in 1 month. Am I crazy to accept? Need advice!

Hello,

I have the opportunity to do my first VJing performance on November 21 at a local venue near my home. I’ve wanted to try this for a long time, but I haven’t had a real chance to do it until now.

I’ve been working in visual production for the music industry for a few years now, so I’m proficient in Blender and After Effects for creating loops (you can check out my website at framesgfx.net and my Instagram (framesgfx) to get a sense of what I do).

I’ve been asked several times if I do VJing, and I’ve always said no—even though I knew it would come up someday. Now the opportunity has presented itself, and I’m not sure if it’s unrealistic to accept, or if I should just go for it.

What I'm missing are the video loops I need to produce, and I also have to learn how to use Resolume with a MIDI controller—all within one month.

The event will last 6 hours; the music will mainly be Hard Trance, so it’ll be pretty fast (around 150 bpm), and there will be four sets by different artists.

I need to produce two or three impactful key visuals specifically for the event, in line with its artistic direction (which is why the client contacted me in the first place), and for the rest of the videos, they’ll be more “generic” loops that I could use for other potential shows in the future.

I’ve already sent an email to the concert venue asking for the specifications of their video system.

So I’m here to ask for any advice you might have for someone who’s new to this field, because I’m pretty stressed and I’m afraid I’ll mess up when the time comes.

Here are my main questions right now:

  • How many different video loops will I need to create to cover the entire evening?
  • Will I have enough time in one month to produce the videos and learn how to use Resolume?
  • Should I produce my videos in 4K at 60 fps for more flexibility?
  • I just ordered an Akai APC Mini mk2 and am waiting for it to arrive—will that be enough for the big day?
  • As for all the effects that add “dynamism,” such as glitches or strobe lights, should I add them in After Effects or directly in real time in Resolume?
  • What do I need to prepare for the day I need to connect my computer to the room's monitor?

Thanks in advance :)

Simple and node group based. Works with Eevee - so you can ASCIIfy your live output. That's what I use it for at least. Free, but you can donate of course.

Question / Help DJ visuals help for a newbie!?

I'm very new to this subject and I've had this problem for a really long time. So id like to have live reactive visuals which would work with at least my dj setup (ddj400 + rekordbox) and if it works with streamed music also it would be a big plus. Any help is appreciated :)

Software / Tools MIT-licensed TouchDesigner Effects, each in a .tox and non-commercial compatible [AI]

While adding TouchDesigner examples to Fosfora (I've mentioned it a couple time here before; link in the TD repo README), I ended up building a collection of TD effects:

ASCII, Bent Cam, Blob Track, Datamosh, Fluid, Glitch, Particles, Pixel Sort, Point Cloud, Slit-Scan and VHS + CRT, so far. Each of these is packaged as a .tox for drop-in usability.

There's also a Showreel .tox that holds them all and fades from one to the next with the music.

No extra plugins or packages needed, no NVIDIA required (I test on my Mac M2 Pro). Audio input for some reactivity, and depth input for some that can use it but "fake depth" is there if not.

MIT so use at your leisure. I use AI to help document and put everything together based on research, which is also included for each effect.

Hope you enjoy, and happy to consider requests!

Showcase CHASER RESOLUME

Hey! 👋

So I’ve been working on a little side project and wanted you to be one of the first to try it. It’s called STLT-CHASER, a chaser for Resolume Arena’s Advanced Output, built from scratch. If you know Chaser, you’ll feel at home 😉

You draw your sequences right on your slices in a small editor, and then the plugin plays them in Arena. Sync it to BPM, the timeline, whatever you like. It can also do wipes through the slices (video or solid colour) and outlines around them, static or running around the edges. And the best part: you can stick the whole thing on the composition and swap layers and clips as much as you want mid-set without anything breaking. That was the thing driving me crazy 😅

Here it is, Windows and Mac:
https://github.com/alfonsostillet/stlt-chaser/releases/tag/v1.2.0

Heads up for Mac people: I haven’t been able to test it on a Mac yet, so you’d be the first! If you give it a go, please tell me whether it works 🙏

Oh, and it’s totally free. Always will be, that’s kind of the whole point. It’s open source, so if you feel like hacking on it or making it better, go for it! Just send me a copy of what you did, I’d honestly love to see it 🙌

Give it a spin when you get a chance and let me know what you think, or if something breaks (it probably will somewhere 😂).

Cheers!

Discussion Content Creation on an Android Phone?

I have an hour-long bus commute to work, and would like to do something productive in that time, ideally for VJing.

I mostly use Resolume, with some additional work in Affinity Studio, and I have begun learning Natron. If anyone has recommendations for apps or web tools that will run on an average android phone, I would love to hear about them. TIA.
