Discussion I feel like not enough new producers are told to learn synthesis

I’m at the point now where I have been making dance music for 7+ years and I have studied so much sound design that it takes me way way longer to make a track using any instrument or fx samples( the time spent looking)

For drum one shots I will make the transient myself usually with just a sine wave and short noise shaping, and then find the character of another sample to layer over

But when it comes to bass, melodies, leads, pads, fx and risers, it is so much less time consuming to design than myself

I think as a new producer, if you are serious about becoming good,if you take the time to learn synthesis it will help you out so much in the long run.

Even if you learn by deconstructing presets( turning all modulation and effects), it’s still going to elevate your productions

Also, if synthesis is too much or if you don’t know what sounds to use for intros you can’t go wrong with piano/strings/brass/woodwind

Would anyone be able to help navigate me to any good resources to learn how to live loop to create a live performance on Logic Pro? The YouTube videos I’ve stumbled across have been pretty vague. Open to written resources too.

Question What do you think about this widening trick on a bus?

Hi,

Watched new Big Z video on widening sounds without introducing artefacts and losing energy in mono.

https://youtu.be/RUX0O8LgMu8?si=tGfY6Fu5CDzhXivL&t=425

I'm using Logic Pro same as him so I have all the plugins except that Waves TransX plugin, I hate waves so I wonder if I can replace that one plugin with something else? I don't even fully understand how this plugin works here.

Any tips appreciated.

Discussion Best mixed electronic tracks you've heard?

Hi,

I want to get some reference tracks that have outstanding mixing, I'm mostly interested in electronic music, whether it's Trance or Techno or EMD or whatever.

I mostly struggle with making my mixes sound 3D and having insane separation of sounds.

Also some tracks sound insanely wide, I know a lot of tricks but applying it is a different story.

And statistically "edm" sounds narrower compared to POP music, if It's an amazing pop track then feel free to list it too.

Cheers!

Discussion favorite examples of decontextualized hip hop samples?

classic stuff like zay chant, jerk chant, 808 siren, chop snare etc. being used in different genres or in a more experimental way like adding effects to them.

the only example that comes to mind right now for me are the new babyfather singles that sample wake up f1lthy and ok producer tags. also jane remover does this a lot (chop snare in daria core, that one detroit perc in star people, etc)

Resource Collaboration with a music producer on a song

Hey! I'm currently working on my song and have been trying to produce it myself, but the genre is so much different than what I’m used to, I just simply cannot translate my idea into a coherent sequence.

I'm leaning towards a mix of electro-pop with a strong bassline and short piano sequence at the beginning (this i wrote).

I've already started writing the core of lyrics and have a pretty clear idea of where I want to take it creatively.

Not sure if it’s a right place to ask but anyone here would be interested in collaborating on the beat? I'd love to work with someone who enjoys experimenting and creating something a little different. Thank you!

Question Why upload final masters in 88,2 96 kHz?

I am fully aware that the difference between the final masters of a modern-day pop song in 16-bit or in 24-bit makes little to no audible difference. This made me wonder about the following things regarding sample rates

- Can people actually hear the differences in sample rates above 48kHz?

- Can people hear the differences in sample rates above 48kHz in a final mix and master?

- Are there benefits to uploading the final masters at a sample rate higher than 48kHz?

- In what situation would 96kHz be better than 88.2kHz?

If the answers to the first two questions are "yes," then why is it not used more often, aside from pitch and speed modulation purposes?

Looking forward to your responses

Question Hello, I'm just getting into music production and making. What's the best app to mix your tracks and or record?

Basically, I want to make music recorded by me, and I wanted to know what's the best app to put recorded music into, maybe one to record with BPM and bars, since it's hard to get the recordings 100% right. Any suggestions are welcome.

Discussion Is there Linux/opensource support yet?

With all the software reverse engineering projects and vibecoding going on, I was wondering, if Linux/open source support for a good DAW and good drivers is finally here. I used Reaper with a cheap audio interface and a neural guitar amp box for recording under windows. I think the last time i checked some driver or codex was missing under Linux. Shouldnt it be easier to create a free version of the missing pieces now, and does that already exist?

I would love to reproduce the effect of the opening vocals. It feels like they were chopped manually? I don’t know, does anyone have a guess?

Question Old pc and bass/electro guitar

I have been doing music production with my old setup ( i5 3570k + 12gb ddr3 ram + ASUS P8H61-MX motherboard ). And a rampage gaming headphone xd. I got a little money in hand so I was planning to buy a bass guitar like Ibanez GSR200 and an audio interface like Behringer U-Phoria UM2, I dont think I want an amplifier. Would I face any obstacles if I buy that guitar + audio interface because my setup is old? I'm new to these things so I don't know if I am missing something or not.

Question Title: Is there a plugin that can automatically even out vocal tone across different takes?

I'm working with sung vocals recorded over several days. The singer wasn't always in exactly the same position in front of the mic and sometimes moved or turned their head during a take.

Because of this, the tone changes between takes and sometimes even between phrases in the same take. Some parts have a stronger proximity effect, with more low end and boominess around 200 Hz. Other parts sound thinner because the singer was farther from the mic. Some phrases also sound noticeably brighter than others.

When I put these takes together, you can hear the tone change. I'm trying to make the vocal sound consistent throughout the song, especially in the low mids.

Is there a plugin that can automatically follow these changes and correct them? Ideally, I'd like to pick a good section of the recording as a reference and have it bring the other phrases closer to that sound.

I don't want to cut 200 Hz across the whole track, because some parts already sound fine. I need more correction where the vocal gets boomy and less where it doesn't. The same goes for the changes in brightness.

I understand that different notes and vowels naturally have different frequency content. I'm not trying to remove those differences or make the performance sound flat. I just want to reduce the tonal changes caused by the singer's position relative to the mic.

There are a lot of takes, so manually EQing every phrase would take a long time. I'm using Reaper. What plugins or workflows would you recommend for this?

Techniques Percussion Synthesis

Hey there :)
I’m producing with ableton and external synths.
Synthesising all my sounds, except for percussion, drums; for them I mostly use samples and edit them to my taste, sometimes layering and chopping.
I would love to have a method/engine for making short percussion - and yes, those will be mostly noise shots with subtle layers - and would like to get some knowledge from ya’ll 🫶

Tutorials and guides will also be great.

*I don’t think it matters too much for this intention but I mostly create electronic, psychedelic trance music.
** synthesisers/grooveboxes that answer my need for deeply customizable percussion sounds will also be welcomed.

Thanks fellas

Question Question regarding sub bass

Do I keep the sub frequencies in my 808 and kick?

Should I layer my 808 with a second bass so that it's audible to people who listen to my music on phone? (Which is 90%)

Also, will there ever be a time when I won't be this confused about mixing?
