MOD POST [MOD POST] We want to do better for you, tell us how.

Hey everyone,

First, thank you. This community exists because people are willing to show up, be honest, and trust strangers with the hard stuff. We deal with some incredibly difficult and often sensitive topics here, and we want to make sure we're holding that space well.

As mods, we spend a lot of time thinking about reports, rules, flairs, and basically just keeping things civil. Lately we've been sitting with a bigger question: is there more we should be doing?

So we're coming to you directly:

Is there anything we could do, as mods, or as a community, that would make this space feel safer or more useful to you?

A few things we've specifically been thinking about:

Canned responses & resources
We have a number of pre-written responses designed to point people toward help when they're dealing with something really hard. Have those been useful? Do they feel cold or impersonal? Is there a better way to provide these resources? Are there situations where you wish we'd offered resources but didn't?

Our team size
We're a very small mod team, intentionally so. It keeps us cohesive and lets us handle sensitive situations with a consistent and reliable voice. The tradeoff is that our queue backs up sometimes. When life happens (sick kids, work, all of it), posts and comments can sit in automod longer than any of us want. We're aware of it, and we're thinking about how to address it, if it needs addressing.

Our rules
Are the rules we have in place sufficient? Have you found yourself wishing we would add a new rule to make reporting certain types of content more accessible? Are there any rules which are vague, confusing, or simply need reframing?

Blind spots
We don't know what we don't know. Are there situations that we are just completely misunderstanding and not properly addressing? Is there something you feel like you need to say, because we simply need to hear it?

-

There are no wrong answers here. Lurkers, this means you too! You don't have to be a regular poster for your perspective to matter.

We're not looking to overhaul everything. We're a small team with real limits. But we also know how much a good vent can matter, and we want to make sure that when someone comes here at their lowest, they leave feeling a little less alone.

Provide your feedback here in the comments of this thread. We will be reading through all of it, even if we may not reply to every comment, we're genuinely here to listen, not to defend ourselves.

Kind Regards,

r/venting Mod Team

Info about posts getting deleted (mod post)

Hi, to everyone new to reddit.

How reddit works is that if posts get flagged or put for mod reviewal the post will show as ”this post was deleted by mods on r/venting”.

But actually it means that it will just not be posted until we review it. It goes to out mod queue and we will then check manually if it breaks the rules or not.

(this will not be the case for most posts; but posts that contain strong language such as slurs for example will get automatically flagged so we have to review them manually).

I am making this post because we have gotten some modmail from users asking about this/gotten disappointed their post was ”deleted”.

So if you see some message your post was deleted please wait a day or two for us to manually review it. Do not delete the post yourself, because then we cannot approve it. And if we find that it breaks the rules and do not approve it you will get a comment on your post saying ”your post was deleted for xyz reason/for breaking xyz rule”.

I hope this clears some things up, this will be put in the wiki later once we manage to set it up.

(also sidenote: if anyone more wants to join the mod-team, just send us a mod-mail).

Venting - replies/advice welcome I'm so tired of people acting like wanting privacy means I have something to hide

I genuinely don't understand why people get so weird when someone takes their privacy seriously.

I recently mentioned that I use different phone numbers and emails for online shopping, car dealerships, and random websites, and someone immediately started questioning why I'd need so many numbers. Seriously since when did not wanting strangers to have my personal information become suspicious?

I use masked cloaked numbers and emails for some worthless online bull, but apparently that's enough to make people think I'm hiding some secret double life. I'm just tired of giving my actual number to businesses that have absolutely no reason to contact me outside of one transaction. And I'm even more tired of having to explain myself for it.

The whole "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about" mentality is exhausting. I close my curtains at night too, doesn't mean I'm running a criminal empire in my kitchen. I just want some control over who can contact me without being treated like a suspicious person.

Didn't realize that was such a controversial thing to want.

God's biggest Joke

I feel like my entire life is a fucking joke. Born a girl in a family of 6 older brothers, where a girl is literally the WORST thing to be and my mom didnt like girls so that gave me a great start and great self esteem and sense of belonging. Was told I was infertile by doctors my whole life because my hormones were jacked up and they refused to give me birth control. didnt want kids until I got pregnant by the biggest fucking clown I've ever met in my life. Got a very emotionally heavy customer service job as an audhd. I hate the job. They somehow will not fire me. I cannot quit. We are trying for a second kid and now I cannot get pregnant and will literally start my fucking period three days after a positive ovulation test.

We make a decent combined income but are still living paycheck to paycheck

Fuck. My. Life.

Young Adult Rumination

I feel like my constant rumination keeps me living in the past and it has severely stunted me as far as getting my life together and working on myself and my career path.
I can’t help or control it and it is crippling.

I can’t help but ruminate and compare myself to everyone I know or used to know when I do it. I feel like all of my peers have far exceeded me in every way and the worst part is, I feel like I have given everything I have to trying to better my life and make the most of every opportunity that I can find.

Venting - replies/advice welcome i feel trapped in a life i don’t want

• Upvotes

Everyday i wonder how much better my life would’ve been, had not been born into my family. I hate every aspect of living, because i’ll never be true to it. My family is muslim, and half assed on religion, i’ve never followed it. But everyday i shuffle myself around in a hijab and am fully covered. My hairline is receding at only 18 years old since i’ve been wearing this for almost 10 years. But i also know that if i stop practicing, my family will cut me off fully, and i don’t know if I’m ready for that.
I have no goals in life since i cant persue art or music, my friends are moving on with life and i just feel disconnected. No matter what i support or believe everyone will see my identity as muslim and have their own bias.
I’m scared of continuing living like a coward but i’m scared of losing all support from my close friends and family.Everyday i just stare and curate my pinterest feed, looking at the “what-ifs” in my imagination.
My parents aren’t evill or anything, but i know they’d draw the line or call me a slut or something. It doesn’t help that for the longest i’ve been the “normal one”, due to my other two siblings have their own mental issues and whatnot, so sometimes i can tell they expect me to be normal, and get married and practice islam eventually.

Everyday i’ve just been anxious about it all, just dreaming about a life where i don’t worry if im showing too much of my ankles, or if this cloth drapes me in a way that’s sinful.I want to let my hair breath and not be seen as my religion first , but me as a person.

Suicidal Thoughts i fucking hate existing.

• Upvotes

I can't even fathom anymore what the problem with me is. I despise being in this place. I hate having to wake up and do the same routine every single day. I hate people, myself, the world – everything that happens and goes on like there's some kind of meaning behind anything of it all. I'm so fed up of being conscious. Fed up of thinking, feeling and acting like a normal person, when really all I am is filled with such anger and revulsion. There's nothing that helps. There's nothing that works. I'm just sitting here deteriorating, watching the days pass by me wondering what the fuck I'm even here for.

I hate how politicians are allowed to just fucking straight up LIE in political ads

Unfortunately I live in Florida so I mostly see right wing political ads, damn near every day. These mfers are just straight up lying 90% of the time in these ads and it's utterly sickening. They make strawman arguments, put words in people's mouths that they NEVER said and never ever actually talk about what they'll actually do for people, nope it's always an ad hominem attack on someone else's character.

I know the GOP doesn't give a damn about telling the damn truth at the best of times but you'd think the TV stations or websites would have the right to refuse to air ads with straight up lies. They're just as complicit, and it's not even solely "right-wing" sites/stations either.

It's so goddamn frustrating as someone who values truth and fairness.

Venting - replies/advice welcome Ignorant people, self image, and bullying.

• Upvotes

Ok, this happened a few days ago and it's been irritating me. I was out and waiting in a line for some food in my local malls food court with a friend, when I heard this group of broccoli haired guys whispering and giggling.

I had a hunch it was about me, because I'm a big person and I'm unfortunately used to being made fun of. The friend I was with confirmed my suspicion afterwards and said they were pointing at me and it really upset me. In my mind, I'm not a huge person, but I look in the mirror and see flaws and it stings.

I don't understand how grown people can honestly act so casually cruel, are they not taught how to behave in public? Here I was minding my own business, and I'm getting laughed at for doing nothing but taking up space.

Venting - replies/advice welcome Possible NPD parent

• Upvotes

I feel as though my mom has never been a source of support, kindness, or love.
Throughout my life, my mom has always been a distant hands off parent who has never been interested in my life whatsoever. Over the past few years I feel like our relationship has devolved into this me vs her scenario where I'm just constantly under fire by her. I seriously cannot do anything right in her eyes and she perpetuates this idea that I am exclusively this lazy, worthless, unambitious, self-centered person and nothing i can do or say will prove to her otherwise, she just will cling onto this idea and it just start to feel like this never ending battle where im constantly in a fight to defend myself against this over exaggerated caricature of my flaws. Im never good enough, theres always just something that im lacking or something that im not doing right and then it just feeds her negative views of me.
I can positively say that my mom does not love me. She has nothing but distain for me and I just seriously cannot understand what I did for her to constantly villainize me like this. I just feel like I have just been broken down from the inside from years and years of having my character attacked. I have not received any love or words of encouragement support or anything for a very very long time and I feel like its inly getting fewer and more far in-between as time goes on.

I just feel like a very empty, unlovable ,insecure person I have terribly poor self esteem and extreme social anxiety, and i tried to ignore the effects that she had on me for a while, but its just gotten to a point where im just so isolated, I have no friends, no love life, and the only person I am supposed to be able to rely on for support when I have no one, hates me.

• Upvotes

i (18f) have been working at cfa for a lil over 5 months now and my hours were great till my availability went to 10am-10pm to 4pm-10pm there’s more too it like they think im not hardworking or to slow but how do you expect someone to get better when you don’t let me do anything but outside, expo, running. and then there are the favoriting and om’s being ridiculous like the sweetest people at my store got the lowest review because she complained about positions (btw which is not true at all) you call out ONCE and they take all your hours, then they never run breaks right, like i work a four to nine i should get a break right??? like when i work that on a saturday i get one but on weekdays I don’t???, DONT get me started on how rude om and leads are like you make one mistake that day and ur hated for the rest of the night, i literally can’t take this seriously anymore, then the fact that you have a new hire and you wanna make them a om so they take ALL OF OUR HOURS AND MONEY, it’s is my first job and i sit here and work my ass off just to be treated like shit. if it’s supposed to be a community then why is it every single time i try to be one i get looked at like im the slow one, it’s like if you don’t go to church together or dont go to county school you don’t belong.

or it’s just me idk man

Venting - replies/advice welcome I can't stand having macromastia

• Upvotes

Throw away account because of course. I have dealt with this for a long long time. Being a 38O cup is such a struggle. Living with macromastia is an exhausting, physical strain I carry every second. The sheer volume creates a relentless, localized ache—a deep tenderness and a jarring pull with every brisk step that turns simple movement and finding a comfortable sleeping position into an endless balancing act.

Beyond that constant physical ache lies the daily logistical friction. Standard clothing simply isn’t made for my frame, forcing me into a perpetual compromise between strained seams and shapeless fabric, while heavy-duty support inevitably chafes and digs into my ribs. Compounding it all is the quiet mental toll of hyper-visibility: walking into any room means bracing for the intrusive stares that reduce me to my silhouette before I even have the chance to speak.

Work Writers' Strike feel useless for, And it's not worth it at all

• Upvotes

Many Writers' Strikes, both recent and in the past, seem like they didn't really accomplish anything, in terms of both their goals and what they actually did. Even though I don't know much about the industry, I still feel confused about the issues they were demanding and the actual results they got. Writers' Strikes also delayed many movies and added more burdens during that period, to the point that I don't know whether Writers' Strikes are worth it if the results don't really improve things that much. It also seems unclear what their actual goals are, and they seem to focus more specifically on economic issues than anything else. This makes me think that Writers' Strikes might be too narrowly focused and not worth joining if I were actually a writer, because they don't help with other problems at all, such as pressure on the crew, controlling movie quality, and so on.

Bc it’s shallow and mean and unnecessary and it detracts from actual criticism I haver for her but my step mom is fucking ugly. And you can see the racism, the hatred, the child abuse, the jealousy it ate at her. She looks older than my dad and she’s 13 years younger than him. Just yeesh. I hope she’s always stubbing her toe

Loneliness “Seen last week”

Mannnn… I feel so alone. I asked one of my friends if she wanted to go out tonight and she didn’t reply. So I just deleted the message then the “seen last week” message popped up. I feel unwanted. By my mom. By my dad. By my siblings. By my family, by my friends. I don’t know what to do. I’m not good at being alone. I think I pushed everyone away and now no one wants to hang out with me. I try to be happy everyday but I’m not. I’m not happy.

Probably crazy but this bugs me so much

It's probably just a me thing, and idk why it bugs me (maybe grammar?) but I absolutely cannot STAND when pregnant people refer to the baby as just "baby". Like I get the whole placeholder of a name thing, and I also get like wanting to recognize it as a human and not just "a baby" but it fills me with SO much rage when people just say "oh baby isn't expected till summer" or "oh wow, baby is kicking a lot" like JUST SAY THE BABY. Same as when couples will say "we are pregnant" like WE ain't anything, that man is not pregnant 😭😭

I have a pregnant friend and this has been bugging me for the last couple weeks. Just needed to get it off of my chest

Edit: never have I once said anything to my friend about this or brought it up, because I KNOW it's a stupid small thing. I'm not trying to be the police, I'm simply stating it's a dumb thing that frustrates me

My marriage is nothing like I envision it how to be.

Since we were little kids to growing up, I'm sure we all have dreams right? Like dreams of a marriage we want, how our life turn out to be like we envision. We all have envision of how we want our life, our marriage, but my marriage turn out like nothing I dream of.

I do have one dream, since I was a young girl to growing up, to even till now, I still have that dream.

That dream, I still dream of a Chines husband (a Chinese man born in China), a countryside in China, willow trees, a bike. My Chinese husband a farmer work in the rice field, everyday after work he ride me on his bike. We would have 1 child, I homeschool.

Very simple dream, but Fate NEVER give that dream. I ask Fate all the times, why just not give me that dream. I not ask for much.!!

My life is nothing like that though, lol. I got throw on the airplane at age 9 by my Shanghai businessman father, we went to U.S, I did not have a choice, not at age 9, I wish my father would had left me behind in China with my grandma (my grandma whom was the one that raised me, and raised me in the countryside).

My life in my adulthood in U.S, America, lolol.
........
Long term marriage married to a West African Black husband, he a Stanford graduated, a Chemical Engineer, an Executive at a big engineering corporate.
Our toddler died of Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia (PVNH). It is gene inherited (got it from me the mother the maternal side), congenital brain malformation.

My husband's mother whom 84, his mom 5 years ago became Quadriplegia paralyze since her spinal cord stroke. We have been financially care for his mother since, doing everything we can to prolong her life.

It does put a strain on our marriage, but it a mutual decision. 5 years and still ongoing.

So there you have it.

I asked Fate all the times, was that Chinese husband dream too much? Because I don't see it as in anywhere near too much at all. But Fate just not want to give me my dream.

Suicidal Thoughts I discovered I was a forced pregnancy, and I’m more disgusted with myself.

Tw: mentions of alcoholism, drug abuse, force pregnancy/antibortion mention.

So, earlier this year I discovered I was adopted. It came out after an arguement with my mom as I asking her “why did you have another kid? You already had teenagers in your home already. You didn’t need another one. Was it for tax benefits?” Because I was growing resentful at being alive, her strictness, even as an adult.

She later came to my room, and admitted that I was adopted. I’m a kinship adoptee. My entire life was a lie. They weren’t my parents, but rather my grandparents. And my “siblings” were actually my aunts & Uncles. And my eldest “sister” was actually my biological birthgiver.

I was lied to my entire life, and it genuinely fucked up my entire perception of my family. Anger, rage, betrayal, trauma, livid, frustration. No words could express how I felt. I was deeply upset, and even humiliated that I was born from a good for nothing whore. She was fucking complete randoms, and I was never born out of love like I thought I was. I was a careless mistake, a fucking accident.

Now, about yesterday I got into an arguement with my A-mom/grandma, and I was telling her she should’ve forced an abortion on the fucking bitch so I wouldn’t be here.

Turns out, at 6 months she wanted to abort me. I wasn’t supposed to be born. I’m not supposed to exist. She wanted an abortion, but my A-dad/grandfather threatened to press charges against her if she went through with it. Of course, the dumb bitch obeyed. Now here I am, mentally disabled, no life to live, a strict adoptive parent who makes my life miserable, and actively makes me suicidal. I almost took my life just a few days ago cause I couldn’t handle the anxiety she was inflicting on me.

This life is torture. I’m not supposed to fucking exists here. I was forced here against my own bio birthgivers wishes, I was a forced pregnancy she didn’t want. I am a fucking anomaly that’s not supposed to exist in this fucking planet.

I am angry. No wonder she did probably extra drugs while pregnant with me. She was probably trying to kill me. But unfortunately, I am still here against my will.

Medical I feel like I’m getting more autistic. (if that's even possible)

So I’m gonna jump right in and explain that I never came from a family that was accepting of autistic people. Unless you were heavily on the spectrum, my family was just not trying to hear, it so I naturally became very very good at masking. When I was a kid and in middle school I was pretty popular and I always had an abundance of friends. I always seem to know what to say and how to make people laugh, I took a lot of pride in knowing I was so good at masking. Nowadays I’m an early adult and I feel I’ve regressed pretty badly. Not to say I don't have friends, I have 3 close ones, but its VERYYYYY hard for me to talk to new people or go anywhere for a long period of time ESPECIALLY without my headphones. I don't know how to explain all the things that’re changing about my life without sounding like a cliche stereotype of autism but problems I’ve suddenly never had socially now keep arising. And I know people say “Never be ashamed! Your disability's a superpower!” but its literally not. It's humiliating and embarrassing to live with. I feel with every passing year I lose the ability to seem like an average person and now I’m being seen in a way that's so debilitating.
