What does Pax mean? Common terms on this sub explained
Pax: Short for Passenger.
Ping: The noise the app makes when drivers receive a pickup request.
Fare: The fee a rider is charged.
Fair: Fare, spelled wrong.
Surge: Uber occasionally up-charges riders during times of increased demand. The Surge is a multiplier of the base fare rate.
SRF: "Safe Rider Fee", now known as the "Booking Fee". This is the $1-3 fee that Uber adds to every fare to ccover insurance, app fees, etc.
What are the requirements to be an uber driver?
An in-state license is required. Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 25 years old) Use an eligible 4-door vehicle
All vehicles being used for rides on the Uber app must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Must have 4 doors and be able to transport a minimum of 4 passengers
- Vehicle model must be 16years old or newer
- Title cannot be salvaged, reconstructed, or rebuilt
- Rental vehicles, except those from an approved Uber rental car partner are not permitted
- Cannot have any cosmetic damage, missing pieces, or commercial branding
Should you choose to drive a vehicle you do not personally own, you must have permission from then vehicle owner and be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle’s insurance policy. Please note that Uber cannot allow a vehicle onto the platform if the driver’s name is not on the insurance document.
If your vehicle does not match the requirements above, you may still be able to use your vehicle for deliveries on the Uber app.
Is this fulltime job?
Driving with Uber offers a flexible earning opportunity. It's a great alternative to full-time driver jobs, part-time driver jobs, or other part-time gigs, temp jobs, or seasonal employment.
How do I do my first ride?
Download and install the driver app, and hit "Go Online". Once you get a request (a "ping"), you can hit 'Navigate' to be taken to the rider's pickup location. When you're sure you have arrived, flip back over to the Uber app and hit 'Arrived'. The passenger (PAX) will be notified of your arrival, though it's also nice to text them - to let them know what type of car you're in (though they see this on their app, not everyone looks) and to confirm that they're actually where their pin was placed. When they get in the car, hit 'Begin Trip'. If they haven't entered their destination, you can enter it - then hit 'Navigate' again and you will be routed there. At the end of the trip, hit 'End Trip', rate your passenger, and you'll be placed back online ready to pick up another PAX!
What are the safety features for uber drivers?
Emergency assistance button
You can use the in-app Emergency Button to call authorities to get help if you need it. The app displays your location and trip details, so you can quickly share them with emergency services.
24/7 incident support
Uber customer associates trained in incident response are available around the clock.
Follow My Ride
Friends and family can follow your route and will know as soon as you arrive.
2-way ratings
Your feedback matters. Low-rated trips are logged, and users may be removed to protect the Uber community.
Phone anonymization
If you need to contact your rider through the app, your phone number may stay private.
GPS tracking
All Uber trips are tracked from start to finish, so there’s a record of your trip if something happens.
RideCheck
Using sensors and GPS data, RideCheck can help detect if a trip goes unusually off-course or a possible crash has occurred. If the app alerts us to such events, we’ll check in on you and offer resources to get help.
Contact Safety Agent
You can connect with an ADT Safety Agent via phone call or text on every trip. Just tap the safety shield icon and select Contact safety agent.
Audio Recording
If you feel uncomfortable, you can record the audio of the trip within the app. Just tap the blue shield to open your Safety Toolkit and access the Record Audio option.
Emergency help if you need it
If you ever need urgent help when riding with the Uber app, you can contact 911 using the in-app Emergency Button in the Safety Toolkit.
The app will show your live location, vehicle information, and license plate number, which you can quickly share with the emergency dispatcher so they can send help faster. And in a growing number of US cities, this information is automatically provided to the dispatcher.
Does Uber help in event of an accident?
When you earn with a transportation network company (TNC), referred to here as ridesharing, many states require extra—and costly—insurance.
Uber maintains this insurance on your behalf. What’s covered depends on factors such as who was at fault; whether you were offline, online, en route, or on-trip; and your personal insurance policy.
Offline coverage:
Your personal auto insurance covers you while you’re offline. You must maintain personal automobile insurance at mandatory minimum limits and provide proof of your insurance to drive and deliver with a vehicle with Uber.
Coverage to repair your car when you’re en route to or on a trip is contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage.
Coverage when online and available for a trip
Accidents happen. Suppose you’re at fault and another person gets hurt or their vehicle gets damaged. In that case, our third-party liability insurance covers the cost of injuries or damage in at least the following amounts:
-$50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries
-$25,000 in property damage per accident
Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:
Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver
Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault
Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault.
Coverage when en route or on a trip
Uber maintains some of the most comprehensive insurance for ridesharing and deliveries, including:
-Insurance that covers at least $1,000,000 for property damage and injuries to riders and third parties involved in an accident where you’re at fault
Insurance that covers the cost to repair your car, up to the actual cash value, with a $2,500 deductible, contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage. This extra insurance maintained by Uber protects your car, no matter who’s at fault, if you maintain comprehensive and collision coverage on your own vehicle.
In most US states, you can also purchase Optional Injury Protection to cover your additional medical expenses if you’re hurt in an accident. This insurance offering, pioneered by Uber, is designed specifically for drivers.
Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:
-Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver
Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault
Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault
Is being an uber driver worth it?
Recent reports from Uber state that "the vast majority of drivers are satisfied" and that "as of last quarter, drivers in the US were making about $33 per utilized hour" before expenses.
Its for you to decide if its worth it for you personally, volume and earnings will vary greatly between markets. Drivers as independant contractors are also responsible for all expenses which have been rising fast when drivers pay has stayed stagnant.
There are many direct and hidden costs associated with being an uber driver. To start with, You are responsible for tracking your own miles, profits and losses, as well as expenses such as gas, repairs, washes, and so on.
In addition, no one but you is responsible for ensuring you are earning enough. You need to be aware at what rate you are making enough for it to be worth it.

It's easy to get jaded driving for Uber, but I try to appreciate the unique experiences. Here's mine—what's yours?
I drive in Milwaukee where, if you're unaware, the Brewers are close to winning the MLB World Series.
Today I picked up six elderly Japanese businessmen from a fancy hotel. Immediately there was an obvious language barrier as I greeted them and asked if the temp/music was ok. The ride felt a bit uncomfortable at first as the conversational tones with each other felt quite aggressive.
A little while into the ride, the gentleman sitting next to me seemed to ask if we'd be driving past the Brewer's stadium. I said yes, then slightly altered our route to get there. Everyone took out their phones and cameras as on the stadium became visible from the highway and the vibe level noticeably perked up.
I decided to dip off into a parking lot by the front to see if they wanted to get out and take pictures. After some gesturing, they excitedly poured out to take photos all over for like 15 minutes. When they got inside they all looked and sounded like 10-year old schoolboys who just got a player's autograph.
It was a truly remarkable experience to share with them, and honestly, seeing that kind of pure, unexpected joy made my entire week.

Wow, Uber's app sucks compared to Lyft.
So firstly, I've looked an researched... it literally doesn't allow us to just block passengers like Lyft does? Wow.
Secondly... here's what happened to me tonight:
I pulled up to the pickup, of course they take their sweet time, finally come walking out, a couple and 2 little kids. I ask them if they have a car seat, we do the whole "I do this all the time" "sorry but I'm following policy and the law" stuff.
So I cancel for no car seat, a safety issue, and pull away.
Then, as I'm pulling out of their complex, Uber sends me the SAME ride again for $1 more... the fuck? I hit the X as I already know they don't have a car seat.
Pull out onto the street, they send me the same ride AGAIN, $2 less now, I reject it again.
They proceed to try and send it to me 2 more times before I just go offline.
What the hell is that garbage system? So Uber doesn't even un-pair them from you for the time being if you cancel a ride OR reject a ride offered in queue? Thankfully I take Lyft more seriously and don't care about my acceptance rate on Uber or I'd be pissed getting like 5 rejections on my stats over a single ride.

Can you hypothetically gain maximum earnings the less your car moves?
This question mostly concerns drivers who pull 12-hour shifts.
Unlike Lyft, Uber's 12-hour counter is based on active driving rather than just being online. Even though the timer stops when you've stopped (after a while), you can still receive requests.
There are quite a few drivers that drive around while waiting to receive a request. But that runs out the timer faster. That's less time to receive requests.
Would you earn more if you waited for requests parked rather than driving around?

What is wrong with Denver lately?
At 8pm on any day, downtown should not be completely grey. It's been terrible the last couple weeks here.

Uber in a rental vehicle!
Hi everyone, I'm a university student based in Australia with a main job at a store. I'm planning to start driving for Uber this week as a side hustle for extra income, using a rental vehicle. I'm not sure whether it will actually be profitable with the rental costs. Is this a good idea, or would you advise against it? I'd really appreciate your thoughts to help me decide. Thanks in advance!"

Rideshare drivers: do you trust your mileage app's numbers at tax time?
I'm a developer researching mileage tracking for rideshare. No app yet, nothing to sell.
I've read a lot of complaints that apps miss the miles between rides (driving to a hotspot, heading home after the last trip). Those are deductible too, and they add up.
- Do you track only on-trip miles or your whole shift?
- Have you ever compared your app's total with Uber's tax summary? Was it way off?
- What do you use, and do you pay for it?
Curious how people handle this.

Which payout method do you prefer?
I’m starting Uber soon and trying to choose the best payout method. For drivers here, what’s been the most reliable for you, weekly deposits, Instant Pay, or the Uber Pro Card? I’m looking for real experiences with fees, speed, and any issues. Thank you in advance for your help.

Uber Drivers: Is Uber Taking Back Your Reimbursements? Check Your Breakdown! ⭐
I’m an Uber driver, and I recently discovered something concerning in my weekly earnings breakdown. I’m sharing this because I believe other drivers should check their statements carefully.
Here’s what happened:
On October 18, 2026, a passenger spilled alcohol inside my vehicle. I reported the incident to Uber and received a $55 cleaning reimbursement.
However, when reviewing my Customer Fare Breakdown for October 12–19, 2026, I noticed something unusual:
Total Customer Fare: $1,203.30
Post-trip Adjustments: −$55.00
Cleaning Reimbursement credited separately: +$55.00
My Fare Earnings: $472.26
The negative $55 appears under “Government taxes, third-party fees, and regulatory-related charges” in my Customer Fare Breakdown.
Why was exactly $55 deducted from the total customer fares during the same week Uber credited me a $55 cleaning reimbursement?
Was this $55 actually charged to the passenger and then removed from the fare breakdown to be paid separately? Or did this adjustment reduce the fare earnings I otherwise would have received?
I am not claiming to have proven either explanation. I want Uber to provide an actual accounting reconciliation.
Here’s where things became even more concerning.
I contacted Uber Support repeatedly and asked them to explain the negative adjustment.
Instead of answering, representatives repeatedly confirmed that I had received the $55 reimbursement — something I never disputed.
I repeatedly requested escalation to a supervisor or someone in Payments/Accounting who could review the transaction records.
Several conversations were closed without a meaningful explanation.
One representative eventually claimed:
“The $55 deduction is required due to government policy, third-party charges, or other legal or safety reasons.”
When I asked which specific law, government regulation, or policy required this deduction, I did not receive supporting documentation.
I’m attaching screenshots of the fare breakdown, reimbursement, and conversations with Uber Support so you can see exactly what happened.
I’m asking every Uber driver to check something:
If you have EVER received a cleaning fee, damage reimbursement, cancellation-related credit, promotional adjustment, or any other reimbursement or credit from Uber:
Open your Customer Fare Breakdown for the same week.
Check the “Post-trip Adjustments” and other deduction categories.
Look for any negative amount that exactly matches your reimbursement or credit. Compare it with your weekly Earnings Statement.
If you find a match, ask Uber whether that adjustment reduced your actual fare earnings.
Please share what you find in the comments, including the reimbursement amount, adjustment amount, date, and Uber’s explanation. Do not share passenger details or personal account information.
I want to know whether this is simply an accounting presentation that Uber has failed to explain, or whether drivers are being financially affected.
If multiple drivers identify the same unexplained pattern, we should document the evidence, request formal accounting reviews, and consider coordinated complaints or legal consultation if the records show improper deductions.
This is about transparency and accountability. Drivers deserve to know where their money comes from and how their earnings are calculated.
Has anyone else noticed this?
And here’s what I think every driver needs to pay close attention to:
Uber may explain these matching deductions as merely accounting adjustments, different reporting categories, or money being moved between statements. But we should not simply accept that explanation without seeing the actual numbers.
The real question is whether these so-called accounting adjustments are reducing the fare earnings we would otherwise have received.
Think about it: If Uber deducts $55 from the customer fare calculation and then credits us $55 as a “reimbursement,” did we actually receive an additional $55 in compensation? Or did Uber simply move money around and present it as a reimbursement?
A matching deduction and reimbursement do not automatically prove that drivers lost money. But they absolutely deserve a clear, transaction-level explanation.
Don’t just check whether Uber credited your reimbursement. Check whether an equivalent amount was deducted elsewhere, and more importantly, whether that deduction affected your actual earnings.
If Uber claims it’s just an accounting adjustment, ask them to prove it with a complete reconciliation showing what customers paid, what Uber retained, and what you actually earned.
We need transparency, not vague explanations.
We already lose valuable time and income cleaning up messes caused by passengers instead of taking rides. And now I’m questioning whether Uber actually reimburses us as promised.
If Uber handled this correctly, why have more than 10 support agents repeatedly avoided my questions, given vague answers, and asked the same questions over and over?
For example, I mentioned the $55 amount at least five times, yet an agent still asked me how much I was disputing. Then, barely 30 seconds later, they claimed I hadn’t responded and immediately closed the chat without giving me a reasonable chance to reply.
At this point, it feels like they’re deliberately wasting my time, hoping I’ll give up or get frustrated enough to stop asking questions.
If everything is legitimate, why is it so difficult to get one clear, straightforward answer?

10 rides last night not a single tip. WTF?
Clean car, 21 Sorento. No smells or issues. Its a college town, I even got out of my car and helped with bags, and in one case I even got out of my car and helped take a group photo as everyone was leaving. 500+ five star ratings. 4.98 overall (Only two bad reviews people scamming free rides before I got my dashcam)
One of the rides even said if I waited she would tip extra because she was slightly delayed.
I just don't get it. I honestly hate this fucking job lately. Uber is taking so much more of the fare than last year in this area too.
Its almost like the riders see surge as the tip in this area. But it's surging because no one wants to drive anymore for what these shit rates are and no tips.

Look at that smile. He knows what he is doing.
He was paid $200m to join Uber. He cleaned up their bad image. Then started doing drivers and customer dirty slowly like boiling a frog so people do not notice.
Less than a dollar a mile to the middle of nowhere.
Please quit accepting these rides!!!!

Always have a Plan B.
I made a mistake I hope to help prevent others from making.
I was making enough money with Uber. I didn't fully understand how committed the company was to making the experience shit not only for their customers but also for us. At one point, I saw the rates plummet 30-40% overnight. Yes, I'm serious. Things have only gotten worse since. These days, the majority of requests I receive – exclusive or Trip Radar – are for $2-5. That's full fare, not per mile.
Needless to say, I'm paying rent with credit cards, watching my debt grow each month.
Heed my warning. I used to have a solid income working in tech and months into a fruitless job hunt, I started driving, depending on rideshare exclusively. Did I think I was too good to work retail? Admittedly, yeah. I'm not skill-less; I have a great resume. But I've fucked up by choosing Uber to such an extent that I'm thinking I'd have been better off cleaning the smoothie machine at 7 Eleven all this time.
If you've fallen on hard times financially, don't make it worse. Stop the bleed.
In my experience, driving Uber is like letting people kick you when you're down.
Those of you who think you're in strong markets, this company has a history of flipping the switch on people. Don't for a single second think they're not coming for you. Plan ahead.

Control Demand, communication w/other drivers and don’t pay attention to trolls
Ride-share drivers can gain real leverage by applying basic supply and demand principles. Because drivers represent the market supply, strategically going offline between rides lowers the number of available cars, driving up demand and fares. However, for this strategy to work, drivers need direct, troll-free spaces to communicate. By avoiding trolling and sharing constructive information, drivers can coordinate effectively to balance market power in their favor.
Trolls are almost always bots. Or people deployed directly by Uber in these forums to sow decent. Pay trolls no mind.

Question Regarding Background Check
Title: Can I drive for Uber with a Stay of Proceedings in BC?
My previous Uber background check showed pending criminal charges under “Awaiting Disposition,” but the Crown has now entered a Stay of Proceedings. Police confirmed my record has been updated.
Has anyone been approved for Uber in BC with stayed charges showing on their background check? Should I reapply?
