Analysis The History of Squirrel Time: From $10 Meme to Falcons Legend

Hello fellow squirrel lovers.

Have you noticed how every time we win a game, there is a Squirrel Time video posted by /u/-muddy-water- on the subreddit that gets tons of love? The squirrel has become a tradition now for the past 3 seasons as a post-victory celebration, but how did it come to be? I've seen a bunch of people asking about that anytime the squirrel comes up. So, let me tell you the story.

I Paid An Editor $10 For This Edit

During September through October of 2021, there was a viral meme trend called "I paid an editor $10 for this" where the squirrel video was overlaid on a gaming clip or a sports highlight.

The one that matters for this story is the one that was posted by the LA Chargers social media team posted on X that also got popular on r/NFL on October 10, 2021.

A Pat On The Back... For Me

Not to toot my own horn... but this is where I enter the story. I saw the viral post and thought it was funny as hell. I had this meme on the back of my mind for the next few weeks.

Young Hoe Koo's Prime

Remember when Koo was a Pro Bowler and on the top of his game? Those were good times. During his prime, Koo made several kicks that ended up winning the game for the Falcons. On October 24th, 2021, Koo made a walk-off field goal to win the game against the Dolphins. Remembering the LA Chargers meme, Koo's win inspired me to make the first r/Falcons squirrel meme.

The original was called "I just paid an editor $10 for this".

Throughout the years, Koo made some amazing kicks to win more games which resulted in several more squirrel memes!

Bye Bye Koo, Hello -Muddy-Water-

On September 19th... our favorite Korean NFL kicker was unfortunately cut from the Falcons following a string of poor performances. And with this, I found no reason to continue the squirrel since, to me, it had always been tied to Koo's success. I buried the squirrel with full honors and thought the meme was finished. That is until...

On September 19th... our favorite squirrel meme poster /u/-muddy-water- created his Reddit account. Now, I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I'm not implying anything but... huh.

Muddy water is a huge Falcons fan, meme creator, and /r/nfcsouthmemewar contributor. He's had a history of posting a bunch of different NFL memes, but for the purposes of this story, his first squirrel meme was on October 25, 2023 titled "When you're 4-3 and King of Shit Mountain" Muddy Water would go on to post the same meme a few more times throughout the 2023 season.

Muddy's First "True" Squirrel Time

On September 16, 2024 Muddy posted what I would consider his first "true" squirrel time video since this is his first video that overlays the dancing squirrel onto Falcons game footage. This was a Falcons 22-21 win on Week 2 Monday Night Football against the Eagles. From this moment on, there was no stopping Muddy Water from bombarding us with squirrels.

A Cultural Icon

Muddy Water's work and our love for this meme has gotten so much traction within the Falcons community that even the Falcons social media team seems to have caught on. During the recent Sunday Night Football game against the Ravens, the squirrel made an appearance in one of the "GET HYPED, MAKE SOME NOISE FOR THE DEFENSE" segments of the game when the Ravens were going for the +2 to tie the game late in the game. I was a personal witness to this since I was at the game, although unfortunately I didn't get a video of it.

Also, apparently during the 49ers game, the squirrel made another appearance and Muddy Water was even given a shoutout on the Halo Board!

I don't even know whether Muddy Water took my concept and ran with it or came up with the idea completely independently and just happened to start posting it on r/Falcons after I gave up on the meme. Either way, Squirrel Time has been Muddy Water's thing for years now. We all love the meme, and I hope the Falcons continue to stack wins so we can get more squirrels from you, Muddy. Great work!

[Kendall]: How Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels has found himself at center of team’s defense

When Daniels returned to the team’s practice facility the day after the Bears game, “he couldn’t turn his neck from side to side,” defensive tackle Maason Smith said. But Daniels improved enough throughout the week that the organization felt comfortable with his return Sunday.

That didn’t make it easy, though.

“I was sore all week, but I knew God was telling me to play this week,” Daniels said. “I had never not walked off the field after an injury, so mentally I had to be prepared. It was about making sure I was OK mentally more than anything. All week I was good, but we were never in full pads. Trying not to overthink tackling was a big thing for me.”

After his first contact with a teammate during warmups, though, Daniels was confident he could play at full speed. It resulted in the game of his life.

“It’s remarkable,” Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said. “What a great kid. What a seven days. Seven days ago, we were talking to his family and talking about him being in the hospital. And then to go play in a game against Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy and go put the green dot on, that is unbelievable.

“And then to make a play at the end. Really proud of him.”

Numbers like this is why teams are going to start blitzing even more throughout the season. Would love to see Penix get somewhere closer to where Joe Burrow stands currently

I agree only if we can make the playoffs this season. So far I love what I am seeing but still too many inconsistencies.

If you don't know this metric, ANY/A is yards per attempt but also penalizing taking sacks and throwing interceptions and crediting TD passes.

MP looking good.

Who is JPJ supposed to replace when he comes back?

Y'know, assuming he's in playing shape out the gate since he hasn't been allowed to practice with the team

What makes me optimistic?

NFL.com has us ranked #13 in the latest power rankings, ahead of five teams with better records. Good on them - ESPN, CBS, and FOX Sports all have us at #19.

What have we done so far?

Handed the Packers their biggest loss of the season
Handed the Saints their biggest loss of the season
Handed the 49ers their only loss of the season
Lost 3 games by a score each, one in overtime
Lost a 4th game in a blowout, but with a 3rd string quarterback

There's reason to be optimistic. One hopes MP9 continues to develop, especially in short pass accuracy, and of course stays healthy. Those are big ifs. Our defense has played pretty well, especially considering a bunch of scores on us have been from short fields on turnovers from offense and special teams. Should only get better with JPJ returning.

I'm not going to jinx it with expectations - but things are looking *pretty okay.*

Matt Ryan President of the Year Favorite

I have tagged this post nsfw because this post admittedly contains content of me singing for a man that's old enough to be my father. I think with the season most half way over and the falcons sitting pretty on top the NFC south after that dominating finished over the 49whiners Kyle shanbahan coached team.

We all know shanbahan very well here in Atlanta as an amazing genius offensive playmaker. He truly is generational at choking especially.

Matt Ryan proved once again why this moron should've been arrested if ever shows his face in Atlanta again. It was quite 28-3 but the score was half way there. We ran rampshod all over them in the ground and through the air. I hope mr

Shanbahan was taking notes because what I saw yesterday from the falcons. was far more impressive

Back to President. Matty "ICE COLD" AR MACHIHE MUN RYAN...

PHENOMENAL ON ALL FRONTS... THE CUPTURE AROUND THE BUILDING HASNT BEEN HIRE SINCE THE SUPER BOWL RUN.

Hes already done it. Y'all are fools of you can't see it.

Mark my words this year the falcons will be competing deep in the playoffs

Lol who the fuck can't we beat?

You can really tell how long everyone in here has been a fan by how hopeful they are about the Falcon's season. On the hope/despair scale, where do you rank? And how long have you been a fan?

Huge shoutout to our fans for holding it down against the Niners this past weekend. There were a ton of San Francisco fans in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but our crowd answered back every single time. Falcons fans are as fye as it gets, and while it was a bit bittersweet, I’m proud of us for repping red and black and refusing to get drowned out! WE HAVE TO KEEP SHOWING UP 4 THIS TEAM🔴⚫

We deserved this victory as homers, every team in Atlanta loss but them. This is the epitome of Atlanta

Analysis 2026 Week 7 Analysis

Despite coming off a tough loss to the Bears and a week of logo “controversy” fostered by people with the total gray matter of a broken crayon, the Falcons showed up when it mattered against the Niners, potentially changing the complexion of their entire season. 3-4 is way better than 2-5, and lands us within spitting distance of the division leader, i.e. the eternally schizo Panthers. Some specific thoughts:

  1. Penix continues to improve. This game showed what he can do when not asked to zip the ball out within two seconds every single snap. He was poised in what might have been his best performance yet.

  2. I have never been high on Pitts, but I have to give credit where due. He’s continuing to make solid plays, and notched another touchdown this game.

  3. The rumors of Bates falling off were apparently false. He played well all game, and notched what might have been the single best display of athleticism and timing this year with a highlight-reel worthy interception out of bounds.

  4. I know it’s one of the toughest penalties to clean up, but we still need to work on getting the guys to ease off these holds.

  5. With the defense banged up, hats off to the guys who held the line and kept pressure, especially early on when things could have gotten away from us. Maason Smith and Lacale London quietly disrupted the Niners offense in particular, as did their peers.

  6. After years of our team having quality starters and then shaky depth, this game should make every fan feel better about the competent team building afoot.

  7. Dotson needs to do some work this week, especially on synching up with Penix. He’ll get there.

  8. I’m not worried about Baker this week. It’s that defense we need to watch out for.

It matters if a QB is only going to their first read or if they are able to quickly flow through the target options.
