I wrote a book about the rise and fall of CrossFit. AMA.

Hello friends at r/crossfit! I am Calum Marsh, the author of The Glass Box: The Shocking True Story of How CrossFit Broke the Rules, Made Millions, and Changed Fitness Forever.
This is a narrative nonfiction account of the founding of CrossFit, its growth to become a global fitness empire, and its various twists and turns through the COVID pandemic and Greg Glassman’s ouster in 2020 (and beyond). It features interviews with over 100 former employees, athletes, coaches, and more, as well as extensive interviews with Greg Glassman himself. It comes out today worldwide and is available wherever books are sold.
You can read the prologue for free at Men’s Health magazine right here: https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a74196321/crossfit-book-the-glass-box-excerpt/
I have also spoken at length about the book on The Barbell Spin, Coffee Pods and WODs, and other podcasts in the space, and you may have heard me on NPR yesterday talking about the book as well.
I’ll be here to answer questions from 11am EST — ask me anything about the book, my interviews, my own CrossFit background, whatever you want. Thanks in advance!

Adidas Dropset
I tried Dropset 4 shoes today and although usually I wear 46EU (11.5US), they were too short. This doesn't make sense because other Adidas of that size (ultraboost) are usually a bit too long for me but I wear them because the width is perfect. Width of these was also perfect so I'm dissapointed because I really like the shoe. It's stable and firm but at the same time a lot more comfortable than Nike Metcon 10. I tried 46 2/3 EU (12US) but they were too wide..
Does anyone else has this experience with Dropset 4? I see that Adidas online shop in my country has Dropset 3 also. Does that one has different sizing? Ty

Personal record 60 minute assault bike!
I haven't been to a CrossFit gym in a while but I still use the assault bike regularly in my own training. I figured you all would understand this one 😁
My pace was slightly over 14 cals per minute for a long time, at about 63-64 rpm. For the second half I was maintaining 64. Last two minutes was 90 seconds of 67rpm then a 30 second all out kick. I really wanted 880!
Next goal will be 900, and then the long grind towards 1000!

How is linchpin and does it work with running?
Hi all, my box has just announced that we'll be moving from programming predominantly written by them to following Linchpin. I've had a look at a couple of workouts and they seem fun. My questions for those who have tried it are: what are your views of the programme in general? And more specifically, how do you think it works in terms of complementing running training (mostly for 10k, half marathons)? Has anyone tried running the two together (linchpin and running training)?

Tyr CXt 3 sizing help.
Hi all,
Just a quick question and hopefully someone will be able to shed some light.
Im size 5UK on RAD V2 and I’ve been looking at getting TYR CXT3. Should I go for size UK5 or go 1/2 up? Rads are 24cm and checking on TYRs sizing chat their size UK5 is 23.8cm 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you.

Simple smartwatch for a crossfit timer app
Hi there,
I practice crossfit on a very amateur scale, sometimes with pals, and sometimes alone.
For those alone sessions, I use an android app called Timer Wod that gives me many chronometers or countdowm used in crossfit for EMOM or Tabata-like exercises (AMRAP and For time aren't really a problem as it's basically a simple chronometer for them).
The problem is that I have to take my phone with me to see and hear the timing, which can be anoying especially if I add some running in the practice cycle, so I search after a smartwach that can download this or a similar timer app.
I have actually a very basic smartwatch (Samsung Galaxy fit 3) I pais for cheap that gives me simple chronometer or countdowns, but no possibility to download an app same as the one I use on my phone.
I have small wrists and that I don't really care about the performance measures, cardio and so on (that's fun do see, but that's all, I'm too old to search after records, I do my session whatever says the watch and that's enough for me) and abolutely don't plan to upload the stats on an internet site.
Ideally, I'd like to have a smartwatch I would not have to recharge ofter, with a mainly offline use and AOS off to preserve it even more (I recharge my SG Fit 3 approximatively only every 12-14 days, so I'd like to have even better battery autonomy).
So overall, what would be the better smartwatch you would suggest me for this kind of use ?
- Able to download a timer app with all features needed in crossfit (I also accept app recommandations, simplicity in usage being mainly researched)
- Good battery autonomy woth a mainly offline usage and AOS off
- For small wrists
- Price is not a problem, althought it would be better if it's reasonnable regarding my usage
- Preferably, not an ugly watch as I will also use it as an everyday watch, not only for sport activities.
Thanks in advance.

Nike Hybrid RN after a few weeks: great for running WODs, weird for Olympic lifts
Been wearing the Nike Hybrid RN for a few weeks and figured I'd share since I couldn't find many real reviews before buying.
Short version: I only grab them when the WOD has running in it.
For most stuff they're honestly fine. Squats, box jumps, HSPU, wall balls all feel comfortable and stable enough, didn't really notice them.
Where they fall apart for me is snatches and cleans. They sit pretty high. Picture a Metcon with an extra 3-4 fingers of cushioned sole under you. When you drop under the bar to catch it you just can't get down as fast, and it feels kind of floaty and off. Not dangerous, just weird.
So if your WOD is runs + gymnastics/bodyweight stuff, they're great. If there's any real oly lifting I'd stick with Metcons or lifters.
Anyone else tried them for lifting? Curious if it's just me.

Do you think discounting members' fees based on performance would incentivize fitness and create a culture of people sharing similar desires to increase their work capacity?
I am thinking people begin at a base rate above what the average CrossFit gym's membership costs are for the area and over time they can drop the fees down to below what the average costs are going for.
It would be based on an individual's gains according to test-re-tests judged by a coach against objective standards.
It would also be something people can pause if they end up in exceptional circumstances (injury, sickness, etc.) or never opt into if they wanted to simply pay a fixed fee* cost indefinitely.
Of course, this presumes this gym is actively seeking people attracted to this and not people offended by this or un-interested in progressing (versus participating).
What are y'all's thoughts about this as a cultural and business tactic to increase buy-in and have people work hard for the sake of increasing their fitness and addressing weaknesses rather than merely "getting a good sweat".
*I originally said "fee" and it makes me think some people think I was saying it was like a fine. Not a fine, I am just referring to the standard membership cost like other CF gyms. Woops.

100 Cal Echo Bike 5:41
Anybody else on Mayhem hit this today? First time attempting a chunk like that.
Did NCFit for 2 years prior to our switch.
Rounding 60cals was very disheartening.
Mayhem gets very redundant, but I have to admit, it’s made daunting workouts much less intimidating.

Got any tips for fading wall walks?
I expect everyone who has done them knows the feeling. They are sailing along when fresh, but then when tiring from the volume or surrounding work, they collapse to nothing. When fresh, I can do them in three fast steps to limit time under tension. When you get tired, do you go to more steps and waddle up to the line, or stick it out? Any other tips?

A question on C2B pull-ups
I struggle doing the butterfly kip with C2B pull-ups, so I use the old school C-kip when doing them. I’m not interested in competing. I just want to be fit. Do you think I need to learn both kips or does it not matter?
The workout today got me WAY out of my comfort zone, but that’s why we do this stuff.
4 Rounds for time, or not:
800m Run
40 Air Squats
30 Hollow Rocks
12 Chest-to-bar Pull-ups
Thanks Linchpin for that one. It took me 32:34.

Pat Vellner in the booth
That dude needs to be Sean Woodland’s permanent partner. It was so refreshing to hear someone that knows how humans speak along with Woodland’s performance. He was relaxed, funny and insightful in a way that we very rarely hear in CrossFit comps.

Rogue “GymTurf”
Would anyone have any feedback on back / experience with “GymTurf” sold on the Rogue website? I’m looking for an option for sled pushes and pulls in my shop. 50 foot of it is 1,950$! But it looks pretty handy for rolling up when not in use.

First WOD tomorrow - bricking it. Tips please.
I have just joined CrossFit and frankly I am so anxious about my first class - not about the strength part which I know I can scale - but about the metcon bit especially if it is a partnered one. I will easily be the most unfit in the room, what if it is a partnered one and I can't complete what they are asking? I don't want to slow another person down, or end up wheezing due to not getting enough of a break because they are so much fitter/faster than me. Any tips to help ease the anxiety or give me an idea of how this sort of thing can be broken down to suit differing levels? Obviously I have joined to get fit, I am just worried about being the last in the room and embarrassing myself.
EDIT: I went. Workout today 3 rep max front squat
10 rounds for time (15 min cap) 20 double unders - I scaled to single skips 10 Burpees - also scaled.
But I did it!! Also dying but had so much fun so thank you all!!

How many members does a gym usually lose in ownership change?
My previous gym changed owners and lost around half the members. My new gym is now in the process of transferring ownership and there are already rumors of people worried about changes and ready to leave.
Typically, how many members leave when a gym changes owners?
