Question / discussion 3D VTT options?

• Upvotes

Like a lot of people, I am interested in using a 3D virtual tabletop, but I have a particular use case in mind, and I'm curious if anyone has built or is building this function (so far I haven't found it).

The thing I want to display in 3D isn't combat; it's overland travel. I want to be able to display terrain to a group at a regional scale, using terrain either I have developed with some other tool, or tools built into the VTT if it has them.

New tool I'm building a browser-based VTT with 3D maps, dynamic lighting and line-of-sight fog of war. Looking for groups to playtest (free, beta)

hey everyone,

For the past few months I've been working on **Pen and Paper Tabletop**, a virtual tabletop that runs entirely in the browser. No install, no gaming PC required. My goal is to combine the convenience of a web VTT with the miniature-diorama feel of 3D tables.

**What works right now:**

- **2D or 3D maps:** upload an image and play on a classic grid, or switch to a 3D board with a free camera, like a tabletop full of miniatures

- **Lighting and fog:** torches with dynamic light, and fog of war that reveals the map as tokens move, blocked by walls

- **Map builder:** grid-snapping pieces that actually fit together. Drag to place floors and walls in a line or fill an area, with undo

- **Library:** hundreds of ready-made props and creatures that become tokens with a colored base per player. You can also use your own image or 3D model

- **D&D 5e / 5.5e character sheet:** automatic calculations and one-click rolls (advantage, disadvantage, crits)

- **At the table:** initiative tracker, ruler, per-player colored pings, dice chat, and separate Build and Play modes for the GM

**What I'm looking for:**

- GMs and groups playing any system (D&D, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire, homebrew…) willing to run one or two sessions

- Honest feedback: what broke, what was confusing, and what's missing before you'd switch from the VTT you use now

- People on modest hardware, since performance is a top priority

[OPTIONAL — keep if true: Heads-up: the interface is currently in Portuguese, with English coming soon. Testers who can help with the translation are very welcome!]

It's **free** and in **beta**, so expect bugs. Finding them is the whole point.

New tool Swift Dagger - Flexible VTT with 2D and 3D capabilies (Godot)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone.

For a few weeks now, I've been putting together a VTT for in-person or screen-cast games. Swift Dagger. This is no trailer, juste some screencapture as a proof of concept for a few of its feaures.

I've been wanting something that can be as simple or as crunchy as I need as I'm constantly switching between Owlbear Rodeo, foundry and Talespire depending on what i'm planning and the time I have for prep.

SD is developped in Godot/gdscript with this flexibility in mind so I can make games as barebone or as cinematic as I need/want. (an earlier prototype was coded in electron), and easy to run in both case.

Disclaimer - yeah it has been heavily vibecoded.
I plan to open source most of it once I’m sure it’s smooth and secure.

Here are a few hightlights and notes :

  • System-agnostic, with modules to facilitate some stuff for a few games (Daggerheart - being my current campaign, 5e, cthulhu, shadowdark). It will mainly depend on the licenses for the differents SRDs
  • A special workflow from within the VTT to turn your map 3D, turning token into standees and "realistic" fog of war
  • Some tools to import/build walls, convert them to 3D, manage distances & grid, line of sight, dynamic weather...
  • Quick effects started with a simple right click drag : area

s

  • (

c

  • one/circle/line) + token to token action + dynamic movements + links (chains, rope, magic...)
  • Fully customizable 3D dice system, including special rolls like hope&fear, exploding dice...
  • A few themes to fit your retro dark fantasy, cyberpunk needs... or to keep it simple
  • Gamemodes to switch between exploration, dialogues (think visual novel), combat with rounds, or stealth with adversaries line of sight.
  • Character sheet with ressources and abilities + transformations for adversaries and Npcs
  • Compendium to some extent, depending on license and SRD too.
  • Only referenced files from storage for tokens and battlemaps, with tools so adjust them in-engine (like removing background from standees and modifying battlemap ambiance). you can easily "consolidate" a campaign with the press of a button, which create a folder with everything copied over here. For those who know, think of it like indesign.
  • As of now, it's fully controlled by the GM with player view cast to TV or discord. The door is still open for PC interaction through opening online ports... but it's a bit of a pain to setup and not something I need... plus I prefer to avoid any online interaction with something AI assisted in the developpement.
  • It currently runs rather well on my machine (a 2022 gaming laptop) but I'm including a performance mode and parameters reducing effects.
  • Capture is in french, but i'm planning to include english language.

Feel free to ask any question and/or share feedbacks / stuff you'd need from such a tool.

Have a nice game !

Question / discussion What's the best way to make custom maps for online play?

I'm preparing to learn a VTT so I can run sessions for friends who live out of state. I usually use a whiteboard for in person play, and I'd like to find something with the same amount of freedom for my online games. I've seen map generators like dungeon scrawl, but this seems limited to making building interior layouts (at least the free version, I'm too broke to use anything paid).

If there are free tools that let you generate nice-looking images that can be imported into a VTT that would be great, but I'd settle for a grid that I can draw lines on with my mouse

New tool DwarfPunk | Free 3D Browser VTT – Live Wall Editing, 2D Views and Dynamic Audio

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

Since my main goal is to build a map editor that feels truly comfortable and intuitive to use, I've been focusing heavily on improving the overall editing experience—adding tools to modify placed structures, optimizing network sync, squashing critical bugs, and laying down an immersive soundscape.

Here’s a look at what’s new in DwarfPunk (my free, browser-based 3D VTT & map editor—no sign-up or install required):

🛠️ Windows Freeze Fix & Performance

  • Windows Freeze Fixed: Resolved a critical bug causing the editor to hang on Windows setups.
  • Faster Loading & Status Messages: Reduced asset download sizes and added clear status feedback on the loading screen so you always know exactly what's loading.
  • Real-Time Entity Sync: Connected users in the same room now see entities moving smoothly in real-time as they are dragged, rather than just snapping to the final position!

🧱 In-Editor Tools & Wall Editing

  • 2D & Cutaway Views Live: 2D orthographic mode, global grid overlay, and map cross-sections are now accessible while editing!
  • Room Reshaping: Drag wall edges or corner vertices to resize and adjust room layouts on the fly.

🔊 Dynamic Audio, Dice & Particles

  • Interactive Soundscape: Audio implementation is in full swing! Forest ambience and surface-reactive 3D dice rolls (grass, stone, water) are live, with construction SFX up next.
  • d100 Included: Added the missing d100 die to complete the dice rolling set.
  • Ambient Particles: Added particle systems for falling maple leaves and glowing fireflies to make the map feel alive.

👉 Try the live editor in your browser: https://dwarfpunk.com

I build a free browser VTT. Which of these should I build next, and why?

Next features for Virtual Battle Mat (VBM). Solo builder looking for honest feedback.

  1. Auto grid align: Upload a map and the grid lines up with it on its own.

  2. Your own 3D models: Upload an OBJ or STL file, the files people buy for 3D printing, and VBM turns it into a token in your browser. The model stays on your computer; only the token image is saved.

  3. More image types: HEIC (iPhone photos) and WebP uploads.

  4. More document types: Word (.docx) and plain text (.txt) handouts.

  5. Better on phones: Compact toolbars and smaller video tiles for players who join from a phone.

Which of these would make the biggest difference at your table, and why? If something else matters more, tell me that instead.

Question / discussion I'm building an engine that procedurally generates isometric dungeons for virtual tabletops.

Hey everyone. I love isometric maps for TTRPGs, but drawing them takes forever. I wrote a custom Python script that generates pen-and-paper style dungeons automatically.

It builds the maze, scatters props, and adds procedural dirt and cobwebs for a ruined vibe. The best part is that it calculates exact Normal Maps for the tiles. If your VTT supports dynamic lighting, the 2D ink strokes will actually catch the light and cast realistic shadows.

Swipe through to see the raw layout, the close-up tile details, and the fully lit version. Would an asset pack generated like this be useful for your campaigns?

New tool Tired of running games with Discord in one tab and a VTT in another? We built the battle map into the chat app

Thumbnail

Hey r/VTT. I'm one of the devs on Nexoria Chat. A lot of groups run their games with Discord open for voice and chat and a VTT in another tab, so we built the battle map into the chat app instead.

Your group gets a space with text and voice channels, video and screen sharing, and the map opens in the same window: walls, dynamic lighting with line of sight, fog of war, initiative and 3D dice that everyone sees land. It's free in the browser, on Windows and on Android, and lighting is on the free plan.

We're a small team, so I'd really like to hear what would stop you from moving a game to something like this, or what's missing compared to what you use now.

New tool Testing on the folding iPhone!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A large amount of my efforts go into optimizing Phroller for lower end devices like 4GB Chromebooks and older phones.

Even though users with those devices are probably less likely to purchase the premium versions of Phroller, I want as many people to be able to enjoy Phroller as possible. Especially since TTRPGs is a hobby for everyone.

It is a nice added bonus that those same optimizations do make the experience even smoother on flagship devices.

I'm really pleased with how it performs and reacts to all the silly curveballs folding phones throw at it.

Ugh, testing on it is kinda making me want a duo :/

Hopefully I can land a job soon so I can actually afford one xD

Owlbear Rodeo RollSight now available for Owlbear Rodeo (Free)

RollSight: use your physical dice in Owlbear Rodeo

RollSight uses a camera to recognize physical dice you already own and send the results into your online tabletop game. Point a camera at your dice tray, roll your dice, and RollSight reads the faces and passes the result to Owlbear Rodeo. No special electronic dice are needed.

The native Owlbear integration includes:

  • Shared results in the room. Public rolls appear in Owlbear popups showing the individual dice and total. Other players can see them without installing the RollSight desktop app.
  • Dice requests inside Owlbear. Choose dice and counts with buttons, add a modifier and roll label, or enter a formula. Advantage, disadvantage and percentile rolls are supported.
  • Rolls completed over several throws. Fulfill a larger request using fewer physical dice. Owlbear shows how many dice have been received and what remains, then combines the accepted throws into one result.
  • Forge character-sheet support. Supported public sheet actions can request physical dice and receive the completed result, so rolls can begin from the character sheet.
  • Optional Rumble integration. Public result summaries can also appear in general chat when Rumble is installed. Shared Owlbear popups work without it.
  • Recent results, corrections and follow-up rolls. The RollSight panel keeps recent results accessible and lets players request linked follow-up dice or append a correction report.
  • Replay support. Replay-enabled sessions can include recordings of the physical dice. Replay sections start collapsed and can be expanded from the result cards.

Each player connects their desktop using a short connection code from the Owlbear extension. Rolls can be sent automatically, with optional review and correction before sending.

RollSight is available for Windows and Mac. The core app and Owlbear connection are free.

New tool Thanks for the initial feedback on Dungeon Display!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

About a week ago, I posted here to share a VTT project I’ve been developing: https://dungeon-display.com

I quickly realized that with so many VTTs already available, I hadn't properly explained what makes this one different or why I built it in the first place. So I took a step back to refine its core purpose and who it’s actually meant for.

I love playing tabletop RPGs in person, focusing on theater of the mind, storytelling, and rolling dice with friends. I wanted a simple tool to manage various session elements (images, ambient music, sound effects...) and a straightforward map manager that feels close to traditional pen-and-paper play. Personally, I don't need pixel-perfect movement grids, dynamic line-of-sight calculations, or precise AoE templates. I just want to know where the characters are and which parts of the map have been explored.

Dungeon Display is designed for Game Masters looking for a clean, hassle-free tool where maps are just one part of the picture—not the sole focus.

I designed the GM interface using sliding panels so you can easily manage any type of content on the fly and keep the narrative flowing smoothly

For the players, it provides a clean, distraction-free display (perfect for a second monitor, TV table, or projector).

The app is 100% free, runs locally on your machine, and uses your own files.

I hope this approach resonates with other GMs out there! Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for your previous comments. And have fun!

New tool Chronacy turns your tabletop sessions into a living campaign chronicle [commercial]

Hi everyone, I’m Ryan, the creator of Chronacy. I built it for the tabletop campaign I play in to give our adventures a lasting home between sessions.

Chronacy turns your session recordings or transcripts into a living chronicle of your campaign. Each session builds on a connected history of the people, locations, factions, relationships, and events your group encounters, preserving how your world develops as you play.

Your group gets a campaign website where players can revisit session recaps, explore connected campaign records, follow ongoing story threads, and listen back to sessions when a recording is available.

Chronacy currently works alongside your VTT using audio or transcripts you upload. VTT integration support is planned for the future, and I’d love to hear which platforms you use and what you’d want those integrations to do. There are no native VTT integrations available yet.

Recaps and proposed record updates draw on your sessions and supplied lore. Drafts can contain mistakes, so everything requires your review before publication. You can edit, approve, or reject the proposed content, then manually publish what becomes part of your campaign’s chronicle. You decide what becomes canon.

Try your first session free.

Question / discussion S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Themed TTRPG with .xlsx tools

Greetings guys

I've been working on a system based off of Stalker Gamma and Escape From Tarkov. Since the system heavily relies on digital tools (made on .xlsx) and I feel like most of the people here would be interested in content of this nature, I'd like to discuss some of it's features in here.

1- How many tools is too many?: The system contains hunger, thirst, tiredness, fatigue, overweighting gear, effects to low HP, armor condition, weapon condition, etc.. But most (if not all) of the annoying math that comes with it are resolved automatically by you character sheet (made on one of the .xlsx).
Same goes for the combat organizer, since the combat system uses distance and other variables to calculate the DC of your shot

2 - How much would you be interested in a "Tarkov Like" game?: Realistic weapons, ballistics, armor, customization and etc. is expected for this game, don't you worry though, again, the external tools will help with DCs, weapon and armor wearing, bonuses for your rolls, etc..
One of the things that I wanted to achieve with this system is "make the exchange of gunfire... look like a exchange of gunfire" instead of fixed DCs, weird damage proportions and armor that makes no sense, I tried building something that really looks like a firefight (in the tactical way and ballistic way)

In the end, I can asure you that the game is minimally viable, I've been holding a campaign for something around 8 months from now and I've got some good feedback from my players, but since I'm the one who's making the rulebook, everything is kinda intuitive for me already and I'd like to discuss from an outsider's perspective

In case the game gets some engagement, I intend on translating it and posting everything needed to play it (from the player's rulebook to the GM book for economy and etc., and of course, the digital tools) 100% free around Feb 2027. Any opinions/answers to my questions?

New tool Half my party went into the tower, half climbed onto the roof. So I'm making a 3D VTT

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been running games for over five years, and yes, everyone and their mother is building a VTT right now. I'm building one too, mostly out of frustration with how much of my evenings prep was eating up. It's called Polymancer: a 3D tabletop in the browser, made to run on weak laptops. No dynamic shadows, and the heavy stuff like line of sight is worked out on the server.

Verticality in 2D is a nightmare. Half the party goes into the tower, the other half climbs onto the roof, there's an archer on the wall, and now I'm doing geometry to get the range. In 3D you just look. Roofs fade when you walk in, walls get out of your hero's way, upper floors show or hide, climbing actually counts. Everyone sets their own camera.

My map editor used to be a separate program. Two to six hours on a map, export, import into the VTT, and then I'd notice what I forgot. Here the editor is the table, so I build before the game or fix things mid-session. Hundreds of low poly pieces that fit together, you can resize and recolour them and paint the ground: water, lava, acid, grass, stone. Building from scratch takes forever when you're short on time, so there are generators for taverns, houses and dungeons. They use the same pieces, and you tweak the result by hand. Players can poke at the world too: open doors, light lamps, move whatever the GM lets them move, or look through their hero's eyes.

Reusing a location meant redrawing it. Six months pass in-game, winter comes, and there go another two hours. Here it's snow or rain in a click, and switching the style changes the whole mood. Same map, and suddenly you're in the Feywild or somewhere deep underground.

Getting people to the table. Some VTTs basically need a technical background to set up. I happen to have one, but nobody should need it. This runs in the browser: nothing to install, players join by link without an account. I also used to spend two hours walking new players through their character sheet, so there's a step-by-step hero builder with hints.

Too many tabs. Want a soundboard? Install one, or stream another app into Discord. Here it's built in and just works. Same with handouts, notes, a name generator and an NPC sheet in one click.

It's not finished, and honestly I'd rather hear what's wrong than what's nice. I'm looking for a few GMs with a group who'd play a session on an early build and tell me what got in the way. It's rough, and it's free. And for everyone else: what would you need to actually run a session on something like this?

Edit, since people asked: I use an AI coding assistant a lot, both for the code and for the Blender scripts that build the models. No text-to-3D or image-to-3D generation, no AI images or textures. ~90 models are from Quaternius (CC0).

Question / discussion Thanks for the directions everyone!

I know there are new VTT's coming out everyday. I heard the resistance to Ai in a tool so I removed generative Ai. I marked all Ai generated assets and images as Ai. I marked campaigns that use Ai as "This campaign has used some generative Ai". I added a player/GM option to not see anything Ai related. its a toggle on/toggle off feature.

There are still Ai images used and I am contracting with local artists to replace those assets. It might take up to a year but it will be done.

I have campaign/session/encounter builders, map making tools that use dynamic lighting over bump/height map textures (all hand made and using Nvidia for the bump maps). I am using other stamp tools from MIT license makers. I built in a custom 3d VTT effect builder so players or GM can create custom effects for any spell, even home brewed spells, that includes summon spells that when cast in combat will summon tokens attached to a character sheet for whatever they summon. I added a rules engine where users can customize the rules/combat to their own liking or build their own system from scratch. Custom effects, custom rules, dice, and such can be sold or given away free in a marketplace. A finished adventure (long or weekend) can be sold or given away in the marketplace. The seller retains 85% of the sales and rights to their material while I keep a limited non-exlusive license so I can keep it on the marketplace until the user removes it.

The core is that biulding a world is such a fun experience and sharing that for other DM's and seeing how many other people incorporate that into their campaign or run a full adventure, and rating it would be cool as a community.

I still have my neo4j graphROG that finds any note and information attached to a campaign or character so a player or GM can ask things like, "What player hold the {item}?" Or, "What session did we meet {NPC}?" Its been a long 2 year journey and I am happy to see it coming together. I am in closed beta and will do a limited open beta soon!!!

Thanks for the advice and I took it seriously and hope to build something useful.

Question / discussion Looking for up to 10 GMs to test a 2D virtual tabletop I've been building (Windows GM app, players join in a browser)

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I'm a solo developer, cocooned away for longer than I'd care to admit building Quill & Compass, a 2D virtual tabletop for D&D 5e. The entire company has been me and a focus group of one, and I no longer trust the focus group.

I'm looking for up to 10 GMs to run a real session on it and tell me what breaks. You'd need Windows and at least one player; players join free in a browser on a laptop or desktop. Testers keep a free GM licence. Windows may show a warning on install; the download page shows what to click.

I built it so a group can sit down and play in one place, with the chores I find in TTRPGs taken away and the creative parts left alone: players roll their own dice, and the GM still creates and tells the story. I use AI tools to help write the code and the app has optional AI helpers for prep chores; no AI made its art, and the maps are drawn by rules I wrote.

Details and a short form: https://thequillandcompass.com/become-a-tester

One question for anyone reading, tester or not, GM or player: what's the one thing that makes setting up/getting into a session a chore for you?

Let me know of any questions or if you're interested in getting involved with the testing.

Cheers

New tool I’m building a campaign tool for DMs (maps, shops, quests, timeline, table screen). with a vtt function. Looking for honest feedback from DMs

I was tired of having to have multiple programs or sites to run a campaign, so I tried to get everything on one site. arkadianscribe.com i have build it for at the table play. we play with a television flat on the table. so i made it for personal use and wanted to put it out there for as cheap as i could. so i want to put minimal ads on the site. and have a subscription on it if you don't want ads. the free version saves everything in the browser so its locally on your pc. and if you support me and the site with a subscription you get some small extra's (i want to keep the core features free so anyone could use it without a paywall) and most importantly if you would get a subscription it will save your campaigns you make on it in the cloud and you can log in anywhere and work or play your campaign. players could also make an account and use the side during play aswell. with their inventory linked to it. so the DM can make chests (add inventories to shape markers) so players can find and pickup items that the DM has put on the map. and buying and selling from shops is also linked to trough the VTT.

in short i tried to get everything i could into one site.

right now the ads and subscriptions are not live yet, so it will save your campaign to your browser.

in short what it does

  • Maps with fog of war, walls, doors and tokens, plus a second table screen for your players
  • Shops where players build a shopping list and can haggle, and you accept, decline or counter. Shops can buy items from players too.
  • inventories to shape markers (to highlight chests, or what ever you would want to highlight on the map to add an inventory to)
  • you can add inventories to tokens within a battle/encounter so players can loot the enemies they slay
  • an economy tab where you can adjust the economy of the campaign. and you can adjust the pricing of areas on the map screen even more.
  • Quests, NPCs, factions, a calendar and a timeline that fills itself in as you play, with a session recorder
  • A journal, a player sheet with SRD character options, a bestiary and an encounter builder
  • a community page where users can share their homebrew creations

anything i could think of to make a session go as smooth as possible. and build the world how you would want.

but i am originally made this for my own campaign. and then tough others can use it aswell.

so i would like your feetback on it.

if anything is unclear.

if there is anything missing that you would like to have added.

and ofcourse i made it for at the table play. but i think because there is a second player screen you can open it could also work for online play.

(sorry if anything is a bit unclear English isn't my first language)

New tool TTRPG Helper - a lightweight offline tool for tabletop RPGs

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey, I created TTRPG Helper, an offline tool for tabletop RPGs

I've been working on this project for a while, mostly trying to make something useful for running tabletop sessions without having to rely on a bunch of different tools

It supports D&D (SRD 5.2.1/5.1) , Pathfinder 2e Remaster and Cyberpunk RED. There's combat tracking, a player-facing display, fog of war, sound effects and animated dice

The app runs locally and doesn't require an account or an internet connection

I wanted to share it here and see what other people think. If you're curious, the source code and latest release are here:

https://github.com/AlexeyMaster67/TTRPG-Helper
