housing & meal plans Monthly Megathread: Advertising things we don't usually allow - apartments/housing for rent, school surveys, items for sale, etc.

Created this monthly megathread to create a space for things we usually don't allow (advertising things) like sales, apartments for rent, or people interested in helping you with your project survey. Otherwise they can be lost in the feed, particularly when we near the end of a semester.

classes & grades Is this class doable online?

I need to take medical microbiology (PATH3100) next semester and am going back and forth between doing online or in person. I generally do STEM classes in person because I NEED all A’s for my post grad program, but my schedule would be so much better if I can do online. So is it a class that’s ok online, or should I do in person? Any thoughts on the professors (Mal Leetham and Sheri Hohmann)?

extracurriculars & social life Dating / Sex On Campus

Heydo! I'm an introvert who doesn't get out enough. I see posts all about how often dating and sex is happening on campus, and parties and all that. I've seen absolutely none of annny of that 🤣. Is there a place/app or something everyone is doing that I'm not in on¿ I'm so confused lol. I'm trying to put myself out there more, so I'm looking for a good place to start! Thank you!

extracurriculars & social life Rushing as a sophomore

Hey guys I’m thinking about transferring to Utah next fall for financial reasons, and I was thinking about rushing a frat there. Is it that much harder to get a bid than if I were a freshman? Just a little worried because I’m kinda planning on how I’ll meet people and this seems like a pretty cool way to meet some guys.

majors, minors, graduate programs Graduate School, Accounting

Hi everyone,

A little background. I currently life in NC and want to move out West. I want to hang around for a year and attend grad school before seeing where else that could take me. With that said Utah is on our short list of places we would be interested in moving.

I would be moving with my wife and our cats. I currently have a job in bookkeeping and to move up it seems as if I need my masters degree because my bachelors degree is unrelated (social work).

  1. Does anyone have any comparisons for NC to Utah? Has anyone ever made this move before? We have lived all over NC honestly so any comparison would be great!

  2. How is the masters in accounting program at the University of Utah? Is it worth it?

  3. We love the outdoors and we are quite homebodies but would love to find our scene and make new friends (as most people do). How is it finding LGBT+ friendly communities? It’s not the center of our world but we tend to find that is our people in most places.

We lived in upstate NY for 2 years and the snow didn’t bother us and we would honestly be excited to see a little more than NC offers. We just want to hear some pros and cons if possible. It wouldn’t be a forever home kind of place but we don’t want to be miserable and love to travel! Would love the access to some midwestern states we have never been close to.

Thanks for reading!

classes & grades ESSF classes in-person or online?

I'm looking for low-effort, 2-credit classes to maintain a full-time student status for Spring '27. Someone suggested ESSF classes like Yoga or Stretch and Strengthen, but from what I understand, missing more than 5 classes is an automatic F. Since the only time that fits into my schedule is the classes at 7:30 a.m., I'm worried I'd end up missing more than the allowed amount.

Has anyone taken an online ESSF class? If so, what was it like?

majors, minors, graduate programs Should I switch my major to BS in Games?

I'm currently majoring undergrad CS in Games, but halfway through the program I realized I don't really like CS that much when it's not strictly related to video games. I want to switch my major to BS in Games, cause I want to study more game related classes (and also have more free time to work on my personal game project).

My biggest concern is that I won't be able to find a job with BS in Games degree, since it feel like a track of all trades. Would be very grateful if someone could give me advices on this.

extracurriculars & social life Transfer?

Hey all, I’m currently a freshman Kinesiology major attending Purdue University, and The U was my second choice. I am planning on transferring this Spring. I thought I would like Purdue a lot more, but the extremely long 20+ min walks to class, repetitive environment, zero scenery, hard classes, no social life (unless you’re in a frat) and 2 hour drive from the nearest airport is already weighing on me. The people here are either engineering nerds who haven’t been outside their dorms since welcome week, or pothead stoners. My friend group is the latter, and I can’t help but feel uneasy because I feel like I haven’t exactly found my people even though I’ve had a lot of fun with them sometimes. I was also planning on doing the one year rule in order to get the in state tuition if I do transfer. My logic is that if I transfer earlier, I’ll be able to cut ties here easier, and be able to create bridges at Utah earlier. Is making friends easy? Are there places to kinda party if you’re not in a frat? I just need some insider info before I make this life altering decision

majors, minors, graduate programs nursing advisors

I just had the most jarring and hurtful meeting with a nursing advisor. I asked about the prerequisite changes and was instead told how I should switch majors or transfer out of the U completely. I don’t understand because I’m doing well in my classes and have a ton of extracurriculars/volunteer hours (which she didn’t even ask about).

I feel so drained and hurt and emotional. My voice was shaking by the end of it and she made me feel stupid. I really hate this, just wanting to know if anyone else who’s Pre-Nursing has had the same experience?

commuting & transportation Parking Ticket $170.00???

I attend Athletic Events on a regular basis and always use the pay lot. It's pretty reasonable.

Last week they got rid of kiosks and have a new on-line payment system. I screwed up and apparently didn't complete on-line payment after entering all of my info? (which I swear I did) I was charged $170.00???

For a University struggling to get fans attending Basketball Games, this definitely does not entice me to return. Cost more than my Season Tickets!!! Might just stay home in the future. Shysters!

I've paid to park in this lot hundreds of times over the years! University can shove it!!!

events & news Why should students invest their education in the U when the U is eliminating the careers they are training their students on?

Just have some thoughts on the recent layoffs and restructuring the U is going through right now. I have friends and family that either are currently employed by the U or attend as students and it got me thinking about this. Why would a student want to trust an institution with teaching them the skills they need for a career, when the university itself is sending the message that those careers don't matter? They seem like they are doing everything to earn themselves a profit while selling out those who are putting their trust in them. Does anyone else feel that way or just me?

events & news Recent Paid Time Off changes among UofU Health employees

I have just recieved an email regarding how holiday pay will be managed, rather than having the option to bank those hours, it will exclusively be paid out.

I believe this change takes away from many employees time off. I am extremely frustrated and disappointed in this change, and would like to communicate with other employees who are equally as frustrated with this change.

Has anyone else received an email? I would like to hear other opinions before attempting to complain/express frustrations with HR.

I hope this is the right place to post this.

events & news Best-paying on-campus jobs during winter break

Hi everyone!

I’m a PhD student at the U, and I’m planning to stay in Salt Lake City during the upcoming winter break (December–January).

I’m hoping to find a temporary on-campus job to earn some extra money during the break.

I already have a 20-hour/week RA position, and ISSS has confirmed that international students can work up to 40 hours per week during official university breaks. So I’m looking for an additional job for around 20 hours per week.

My main priority is honestly just making as much extra money as possible! I’m pretty flexible about the type of work and happy to consider anything.

Does anyone have recommendations for: On-campus jobs that pay relatively well? Departments that hire students specifically during winter break? Jobs that offer consistent hours during the break? The best places to look or people to contact?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences. Thanks!

majors, minors, graduate programs Trying To Decide Between U of U and UVU For Animation

I am finishing up my AS degree for animation at SLCC and I am now trying to decide between the U of U and UVU for my bachelor’s. I have interest in all forms of animation. But which program/university will help me out the most with getting jobs and making connections and such? As I understand it SLCC’s degrees transfer better to the U than they do with UVU (at least with my particular degree) and if that’s the case I lean more towards going to the U but UVU seems considerably cheaper. I am still unsure what to do. What do you all recommend?

admissions & financial aid Should I go to the U as a film major?

I toured the campus of the U and I’m seriously considering going there, but I was just wondering if there are any film majors who have anything to say about the program. I know it’s not the biggest, so is it worth it? Any tips would be great!
