DeMeco Isn’t the Biggest Problem. It’s Time to Start Holding Caserio Accountable.
I don’t think DeMeco is the biggest issue with this team. At this point, it’s a combination of poor personnel decisions, questionable coaching hires, and a lack of accountability. Too many decisions seem to be influenced by familiarity and connections rather than results.
If we’re pointing fingers, Nick Caserio deserves just as much scrutiny, if not more. We’re six seasons into his tenure and still dealing with the same offensive line problems. How many times are we going to rebuild that unit before questioning the person assembling it?
Look at Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith. A combined $36 million in contracts for two veterans who were expected to start but ended up losing their jobs. Nothing against either player, but what was the plan? That’s a significant investment in expensive depth while the offensive line continues to struggle.
Then there’s Reed Blankenship. We don’t know whether Caserio or DeMeco pushed for that acquisition, but it’s another significant investment that deserves scrutiny. These decisions are presumably collaborative, but ultimately Caserio is responsible for constructing the roster.
On the coaching side, Caley looks completely in over his head, and Popovich hasn’t demonstrated he can consistently get the most out of the offensive line. At some point, you have to question both the talent evaluation and the coaching.
The lack of discipline is equally concerning. 58 penalties for 508 yards through seven games, 29 missed tackles against the Giants, and four losses on the final possession. That’s not just bad luck. That’s poor preparation, execution, and accountability.
DeMeco isn’t blameless. He’s responsible for his staff, the team’s discipline, and getting the most out of his players. His reluctance to make coaching changes deserves criticism. But we’re also talking about someone who took this franchise to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. One disappointing year shouldn’t erase that.
Caserio needs to answer for the personnel decisions, and DeMeco needs to hold his coaching staff accountable. I’d rather see this organization address those issues before throwing away a head coach who’s already proven he can win. In my opinion, DeMeco is far from the problem. He’s built a competitive team with the personnel he’s been given, established a winning culture, and brought consistent playoff football back to Houston. His track record speaks for itself.
I understand the frustration because I’m frustrated too, but some of these fair-weather fans need to take a deep breath and relax. Calling for his job after one disappointing season is ridiculous. We’ve finally found a head coach worth building around, and I genuinely believe firing DeMeco would be a mistake that haunts this franchise for years to come.
