Before anyone asks, yes, I know Himalayan blackberries are technically a noxious weed that destroys everything in this city. That is literally why I spent four hours of my Saturday hacking away at the massive, terrifying wall of brambles blocking the alleyway behind my rental in Wallingford.
My hands were shredded through leather gloves, I got thorns in my scalp, and I hauled six city yard-waste bins full of thorny vines. I felt like a civic hero. I was standing there sweating, admiring a clear three feet of walkable sidewalk, feeling proud of myself for once.
Then my elderly neighbor walks up holding two giant plastic mixing bowls. She looks at the bare fence, looks at the chopped up vines on teh ground, and stares at me like I just ran over her cat. She deadpan tells me that specific bush has provided the berries for the street’s annual block party cobbler since 1998, and that "we don't cut that back until September, dear."
i just stood there holding my loppers covered in mud while she walked away shaking her head. Now another neighbor gave me a weird look when I got the mail today. Am I actually the bad guy here for clearing an invasive briar patch off a public right of way, or has this city completely broken my brain?
