Government ICE arrests surge at Seattle-area Home Depot parking lots. Neighbors are on the lookout - volunteers have documented at least 40 arrests in two months, and one man deported in September had worked those lots for 30 years

Since August, Home Depot parking lots around Seattle have become hotspots for immigration arrests. In the past two months, they've documented at least 40 arrests.

One man who was arrested in September made his living for 30 years in these parking lots, getting hired for odd jobs.

~ Forty arrests in two months, and the only people keeping count are volunteers who show up with breakfast and know your rights flyers.

Real Estate Tacoma ballot measure would dramatically reshape tenant protections - landlord groups have raised over $569,000 to defeat it, and the city has never cited a landlord under its 2023 Tenant Bill of Rights

Since the Tenant Bill of Rights passed, the city has not cited any landlords for violating it.

As of late October, the Rental Housing Association of Washington has raised over $291,000 in opposition to the initiative. Tacoma For All has raised over $254,700 to support the initiative.

Since January, at least six apartment complexes in Tacoma have voted to form tenant unions.

~ Three years of tenant rights on the books and not one citation. The groups outspending this measure seem to understand exactly what enforcement would change.

AAPI-Focused Voter Guide for WA-08 and WA SD-30

Hi all, I live on the Eastside and I'm a high school student. I built a nonpartisan voter guide for the local state congress districts for the 2026 election, and the mods said I could share it here.

Lantern Vote grades the candidates in 16 competitive races in AAPI districts on five issues critical to the AAPI community: immigration and visas, zoning and neighborhoods, education, language access, and hate-crime justice. Ratings are based on each candidate's voting record and stated positions.

The two Washington races that involve the eastside are:
WA-08: https://lanternvote.org/race-wa-08.html
WA SD-30: https://lanternvote.org/race-wa-sd-30.html
Full guide: https://lanternvote.org (also in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog)

Happy to answer questions about how the ratings work. If something looks off, I want to hear it.

Politics Call to Action: Help us fight for Safe Patient Care at Virginia Mason- Sign the public petition NOW

Thumbnail instagram.com

We’re asking the public to sign our petition supporting safe staffing at VM.

Safe staffing simply means having enough qualified nurses to give every patient timely, attentive, and safe care. Understaffing can lead to longer waits, delayed treatment, preventable mistakes, and causes burnout for nurses —all of which affect our entire community.

Please sign and share our petition to help us advocate for the safe, reliable healthcare you deserve: . VM WSNA public petition link

Question Hi! 22F, looking for recommendations and ways to meet people in Seattle :)

Hi!!! I'm Yami (22F), and I'm currently in Seattle for an internship until June next year! I'm originally from Chile, and while I'm loving the experience so far, I've realized that making friends as an adult is harder than I expected 😭😭😭

I would love to explore more of Seattle, so I'm looking for recommendations on places to visit, fun things to do, clubs or activities to join, or just ways to meet people with similar interests! And if anyone is also looking for someone to explore the city with, I'd be more than happy to join :)

A little about me: I love k-pop, bookstores and libraries, cats, cute cafés, and spending time in nature. Also I'm (almost) a teacher so I would love recommendations for anything education related, like cute teacher supply stores, museums, or places where I could get some inspiration for my classroom. I'm pretty open to trying new things, so feel free to recommend anything you think is worth checking out!!!

I'd love to hear your recommendations, and if we have things in common, feel free to reach out! 💗

AI Slop I thought my night vision was getting worse. Then I drove somewhere with visible lane markings

For the last year or so I've been quietly wondering if my eyesight was starting to suck.

Rainy night, dark road, headlights coming the other direction and suddenly I'm concentrating way harder than I should be just to figure out where my lane actually is. Some stretches around Seattle turn into this shiny black surface where the old markings, pavement seams and actual lane lines all look equally convincing.

I had an eye exam. Everything was fine.

Then recently I rented a car out of state and drove through a pretty heavy rainstorm after dark. The lane markers lit up like someone had plugged them in. I could see the curve of the road several car lengths ahead without trying.

Oh.

Apparently driving at night isn't supposed to involve choosing whichever faint stripe feels spiritually correct.

Coming back here made the difference ridiculous. Last week I was on an unfamiliar road in the rain and caught myself following the car ahead partly because it was easier than identifying the lane myself. That's not exactly a reassuring traffic system.

I'm not expecting every road to glow like an airport runway, but for a place where wet pavement and darkness overlap for a significant chunk of the year, being able to see the lanes seems like a fairly basic feature.

At least I can stop blaming my eyes.

Dying Why is the deepest puddle always exactly where you're supposed to cross the street?

Seattle has made me develop a very specific skill: looking at a crosswalk and guessing whether I'm about to step into ankle-deep water.

It happens at so many intersections when the rain picks up. The curb ramp is the lowest point, the water collects right in front of it, and suddenly getting across the street involves either soaking your shoes or making an awkward little jump into traffic.

And before someone says "just wear waterproof boots," that's not really the point.

What about someone using a wheelchair or a walker? Someone pushing a stroller? You're supposed to be able to use the curb ramp, not navigate around a miniature pond to reach it.

I understand that Seattle is hilly, drainage isn't simple, and fixing old streets costs money. But it seems like something worth paying attention to whenever an intersection is being repaved or redesigned.

We get months of rain every year. Water collecting at a crosswalk shouldn't be a surprise to anyone designing one.

Maybe this is a weird thing to be annoyed about, but I've started remembering which corners flood and choosing a different crossing when it's raining hard.

Anyone else have an intersection that turns into a lake every fall?

Olympic or Mount Rainier?

Hi everyone! If I need to post this on a different sub, just let me know and I’m sorry in advance lol.
Traveling to WA state for the first time next year for a concert at the Gorge and staying in Seattle for part of the trip.
Not sure if we’ll have time for both national parks, so I’m asking which one is “better” to go to? For the best hikes/wildlife/views.
We’re only there for a week and I’m not sure if everyone will be down to go to both.
We’re late 20’s from the south for reference.
Thank you!!

Business Don’t go to greg’s japanese auto unless you want to get scammed

They just scammed my boyfriend out of 4,000 dollars for a car repair that didn’t even fix the problem and now he’s had to bring it back and they’re keeping it overnight before giving him another quote that’ll probably be another exorbitant amount of money. They told him he needed to replace all these parts, which funny enough, I read several reviews of other people saying they were told needed to be replaced as well and which also didn’t fix their car’s actual problem. Clearly there’s a pattern here. I’m just very angry for him and don’t want this to happen to other people.

Politics Join VM nurses in the fight for safe patient care

We’re holding an informational picket on October 30th this Friday at 7 to 9 am and 12 to 2 pm] at the main entrance on Seneca We will shouting to advocate for safe staffing..

Safe staffing simply means having enough qualified nurses to give every patient the time, attention, and care they deserve. When facilities are understaffed, patients may face longer waits, delayed treatment, and a greater risk of mistakes—while we struggle to meet the community’s needs.

This affects all of us. Please join us, share this post, and help us stand up for safer healthcare in our community.

Why do WA state employees have top notch free healthcare?

I'm currently on the abomination that is the WA ACA. I pay thousands per month for a catastrophic plan that exposes me to $33k/yr in costs. WA state is running a huge budget deficit, cutting public services and Democrats have approved a 22% increase for ACA premiums in 2027. Meanwhile state employee benefits continue untouched with zero dollar premium/deductible. This must be costing the state tens of millions. Why aren't these people forced to pay for premiums like the rest of us chumps? I'm assuming because the Democratic legislature would be affected.

$228/mon for a family on Premera PPO. $3,125 / family deductible. This is $2700/yr in premiums vs the cheapest bronze ACA plan @ $1700/mon or $20,400/yr in premiums with a $10k deductible. So I get to pay $30,400 before my plan pays a dime. Seems unfair to me.

Wait it gets even better ...

"There are no employee premiums for dental, vision, basic life insurance, basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and employer-paid long-term disability insurance. These benefits are paid for by your employer."

Meanwhile we keep hearing that WA state has no money ...

Question Is it me, or are honeycrisp apples not as sweet this fall?

Honeycrisp is pretty much the only kind of apple I eat. Last year's crop was fantastic, juicy, sweet, crisp. This fall, I've tried the new batch at Whole Foods, Costco, and the Yakima fruit stand up in Bothell. Very lackluster, not very sweet, almost kind of vegetal.

Were there just worse growing conditions for honeycrisp this year? Anyone getting amazing ones from anywhere?
