GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Character-based rewatch

Post image

Currently watching my way through Desmond-centric and Desmond-heavy episodes. He’s my favorite character and, to me, the most important on the show. So I wanted to follow his journey more closely! After this I’m diving into Lost: Circle to completely rewire my brain lol.

Anyone else ever do a specific character-focused rewatch? Learn anything new?

Jack’s my favourite and I do a character rewatch, I always see that even though his writing is always subtle, season 1 writers put more empathy on him. Meanwhile writers like Christina and Elizabeth have much more negative ideas about him. But there is always a nuance, even in s1 episodes, mistakes from both sides. They portray his heroism as both strength and flaw in s1 episodes

His backstory is always in the gray area. First they portray his father rather negative, but not too much. Not over-victimizing Jack. But then they shift the perspective and make Jack wrong against his father. The same thing with his wife, you never know who is right or wrong, it’s always both sides. But because he is the last one to make a mistake and does it intensely, the blame goes to him.

Also love the correlations of flashback and island stories in his episodes, especially "All the best cowboys have daddy issues". I also didn’t realize how easily he gets consumed by guilt and tries to make it better and prove himself, ends up a mistake. And he doesn’t believe in miracles, cause he is the miracle himself, with Charlie and Sarah.. and how much Locke reminded him of his father and so on.

That’s so interesting!! I never thought about being able to pick up on how the writers’ feeling toward the character might change over time. I’ll have to watch a character with a longer arc next (Jack, Locke, etc) to see if I can appreciate any of that nuance.

Desmond is definitely one of the most important characters. But besides Jacob and the MiB I'd have to say Locke is the most "important" character. Jack on the surface is the most important to first time watchers because he's the one who's trying to get the group "rescued" and solving the seemingly immediate problems. But Locke is the one who drives us through the Islands mysteries, and acts as the primary catalyst for most of the other important characters development on the show.
