Understandably, a lot of the focus on politics is on the Mayoral race between Bass and Raman and maybe the City Attorney and the race in the valley.
The race that has grabbed the least attention is City Council District 9.
Mazariegos (left / blue jacket) vs Ugarte (right/ black jacket)
This isn’t really a shocker to me (I’ve lived here the majority of my life). However, I am making this post to bring awareness to an election that will not only impact resident of South Central directly but also shape the composition of the City Council that impacts the whole city.
Two candidates who have different policy approaches and have different backings.
Ugarte, former aide to Price (the current Councilmember), wants to ban RVs in neighborhoods, build a rail line down Slauson and hire more police officers. He is considered the ‘establishment’ candidate who is backed by the LA Democratic Party and unions (SEIU local 721)
SC Political Endorsements*: City official (Price), county and statewide elected officials (Smallwood-Cuevas, Kamlager-Dove), LAUSD elected officials (Tanya Franklin Ortiz)
Mazariegos, a community organizer, wants to build more housing, hire young people to clean streets and bring social workers into some traditional police domains. He considered the ‘outsider’ candidate who is backed by the progressive groups in LA (UTLA, DSA LA, CA Working Families Party)
SC Political Endorsements*: City officials (City Controller Kenneth Mejia), Assemblymember Elhawary, and LAUSD elected officials (Karla Griego and Rocio Rivas)
Happy to hear people’s thoughts on both candidates.
*there are much more endorsements that can be listed but I am listing the folks that are directly involved in CD 9 one way or another because it is within their service area or adjacent.
For example, Smallwood-Cuevas and Elhawary both represent South Central in the Legislature. Others like Kenneth Mejia is a city-wide official who serves all districts.
