PLAY Practicing like it’s a performance

Most of my learning / practice time lately has been less guitar technical skill focused and more improving my understanding of mixing and producing live performance over backing tracks. Ultimately I want to perform in this style, tracked drum, bass, some guitars, I primarily sing and play as much guitar as possible. I’ve managed to record something I don’t absolutely hate :)

QUESTION Trying to build speed for metal on acoustic. Need help.

So, I want to push my playing to the next level. Right now, I can finger pick, play chords and do some easy slow solos. But I want to shred and I am willing to put in the time. The thing is, I don't have an electric, and I want to get one in the future but rn funds are tight so I am using my acoustic.

I have been following one of Steve Stine's videos on building speed. The first excercise, which he recommends for warmup, is a legato excercise. The thing is my hammer ons and pulloffs don't sounds really prominent as I'd like to be, or how his ones are. Now is that something I need to build strength for. Or is this an advantage of electric over acoustic. Like the electric guitar can sustain notes more than acoustic. I want to know if I have reached proper hammer on and pull off or if I'm doing them wrong.

Also, drop your recommendations for building speed. I understand the basic like my fingers should be close to the fretboard and I should hold my pick loosely to perform at peak efficiency. I'm alright at alternate picking.

Thanks!

QUESTION How to stop digging the pick too deep between strings when palm muting?

I'm learning to cover Blacken The Cursed Sun by Lamb of God and one particular riff is giving me lots of trouble. The riff in question for those interested is at 3:03 on the YouTube Music version of the track.

I can play it fine without the muting but as soon as I add the palm mute my pick digs too deep between the strings and causes me problems with reaching the required string in time. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated.

I've been playing guitar for about a year now and I bought my guitar for a cheap price in my country. Christmas is almost here and I want to buy s guitar that isn't from a local guitar maker, I usually look for the feeling of a guitar and the sound of it when I choose my guitar and in curious of what other people would recommend I should try out.

Build Your Build Your Own Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster

When Fender came out with a Master Built replica of Mike Campbell's Red Dog guitar, I knew it would be way out of my price range. When Fender came out with a version of Mike's Broadcaster, it sold out so quick that it didn't matter if I could afford it or not. There was no way I would spend over $20,000 on a replica guitar, so I decided to make my own. About 8 years ago I did kind of a lazy job crafting my own Campbell Broadcaster and it's become my main guitar. This time around I thought I'd put some actual planning into it. I came up with this build today with some help from Claude AI. I hope it helps someone else. I can't wait to start building my own Red Dog.

QUESTION Mediocre pianist trying to pick the brain of guitarists

Hey guitarists out there, I just wanted to humble come, learn and pick your brains a little bit. So I want to make a guitar part for my guitarist on a new song, but previously I gave them a difficult voicing to replicate.

Question, when I draw a chord out on a piano roll, how does this translate to guitar fret voicing?? Say middle C, where is this proportional to a gutiar fret board and is there a diagram that I can look at to better understand this?

Here is a screenshot of the chords and voicing, I just wanna make sure its doable for my guitarist because we're both pretty mediocre at our instruments and just want to understand each others worlds.

NEWBIE 4th day learning tips

So far I’ve made it to lesson 5 of Justin guitar so I can play (A,Am,E,Em,D,Dm,C,G) I can swap between pretty much every chord combination when my partner says a random chord for me it maybe takes 1-2 second max to switch to the shape and get it to ring out correctly. But I’m really struggling because I’ve yet to find a song that’s playable anytime I search up a songs guitar lesson on YouTube even if it only uses pretty simple chords like “ feathered Indian” by Tyler Childers it has some crazy intricate techniques i obviously can’t do yet so what I really need help with is finding songs that are playable only using these chords with simpler techniques that will help me learn without feeling impossible.

GEAR Active pickups rant....

Sorry about this rant but I have to vent. I have been checking out my local used guitar market lately.

I'm not even joking the vast majority of the electric guitars that people are selling have active pickups.

When I see a guitar with active pickups its an instant no buy.

They sound worse and require batteries. It's stupid.

I have to assume it's because the owners get tired of dealing with active pickup bs. It's just not worth it. It's not worth anything.

It literally devalues the instrument and I'm shocked mfrs still use them.

I am convinced EMG must cut some kind of deal with MFRS to use their pickups. Because why the hell would any manufacturer choose to use them over Seymour Duncan/Dimarzio/Bareknuckle etc..?

PLAY I've written a free guitar practice app and tab player because I was annoyed by using multiple apps with subscriptions

Hey everyone :)

About half a year ago I picked up a guitar for the first time. Actually I wanted to build my drum room, but that takes a while in our new house, so I borrowed a guitar from my brother to bridge the time and told myself "in one year I want to play In Dying Days by As Blood Runs Black" .. well, turned out it's not that easy.

I watched a ton of videos and everybody says "practice with a metronome", so I looked for an app and pretty quickly saw ads, subscriptions, bad UX .. so I thought, hey, I'm a developer, I'll just build my own. A bit later I started taking lessons and the first thing I heard was "you really have to play over drums". Another 130 euros for drum software? Nah, so I added drum beats to my metronome. And since I was using yet another app just to tune my guitar, which was annoying, a tuner went in too.

Once I was a bit comfortable I wanted to try my first metalcore song, and of course I picked one that's way too hard and I'm still struggling with it 6 months later: Through Struggle by As I Lay Dying (the title says it all). And here it comes .. which app do I play the tab in? Pay 80 euros again or sign up for another subscription? Not with me. My hobby is software development, so: challenge accepted, and not long after the tab player was done.

Cool app or not, I couldn't play the song even at 10% speed because I was missing the basics. I needed exercises, and to stay motivated I needed to see that I'm getting better, so I built exercises with progress tracking. After a while I was at 5 exercises a day and looking up, timing and tracking every single one got way too much, so routines came in, where you chain exercises together. Then came chords and scales, and online it's all "buy my PDF with all chords", "buy my ebook with all scales in all positions" .. you know what came next.

At some point I thought "man, this app is really fun to use, I'm sure others would love it too". So I recorded my own guitars, captured and trained NAM models and IRs, and of course I wanted the best UX I could build.

And here it is .. TabTunix goes into release with one promise: no feature will ever be behind a paywall.

Check it out, give feedback, send feature requests (right in the app), and have fun.

Download on https://tabtunix.app/download

Here are some (most) of the features so far. More will come with feature requests from users:

The Metronome:

  • Click or drum grooves
  • Accents, subdivisions, tap tempo, count-in
  • Tempo ramp: starts slow and gets faster by itself
  • Skip notes: it randomly drops beats, so you find out if you really keep time or just follow the click
  • Presets for your setups, in folders

Tab Player:

  • Open any Guitar Pro files
  • Slow it down to your tempo, loop bars and extract them as exercises
  • Tab or notation, zoom, focus mode
  • Mute or solo any track, each with its own volume and sound
  • Guitars I recorded myself, through distortion, crunch or clean tones

Exercises:

  • Four kinds: a part of a tab, chord changes, a scale, or just you and the metronome
  • Stuck on a part in a tab? Loop it and make it an exercise
  • Set a target tempo, rate how it went after playing, and watch the graph go up

Routines:

  • Put exercises together to a routine, with minutes for each
  • Hit play and it runs them one after another with a countdown
  • Rate each one, summary at the end

Chords:

  • Chord library with diagrams, voicings and inversions, beginner to advanced, click any chord to hear it
  • Common progressions in every key, played in a loop to jam over, strummed or arpeggiated
  • Drag chords onto a timeline and build your own progression

Scales:

  • Scales and modes on the whole neck, position by position, in your tuning
  • Hear it, see which chords fit, and jam over them
  • Shows how a mode is different from the scale it comes from

PURCHASE Help me choose!

I've gone through countless brands and models, from Schecter and Solar to Ormsby, PRS, Kiesel and Mayones, and I've finally narrowed it down to these two:

- Legator N7FOD Ninja (multiscale)

- Sterling by Music Man MAJ170

The Mark Holcomb SE came really close to making the final comparison too, but I want something a bit more diverse since I already own a similar 6-string PRS model, I think.

I'm looking for a 7-string at around less than 1700 that feels smoother for technical playing and adds something worthwhile to my current roster.

Here's what's drawing me to each guitar, along with the things I'm unsure about.

Legator N7FOD Ninja:

- Multiscale yoohoo! Better tension on the lower strings, especially when drop tuning.

- The pickups are SEXY, seriously.

- The 14" fretboard radius sounds pretty curved to me, but I'm not entirely sure what to make of that for technical playing.

- One of the most beautiful extended-range guitars I've ever seen, and I've only managed to find one available to order.

- Stable fixed bridge; reliable.

Sterling MAJ170:

- Set-in neck, which I've heard gives better access to the higher frets. How noticeable is that in actual practice when playing lead? This is my biggest question

- Familiar straight fret layout and 16" radius

- The passive pickups are fine, but I don't wake up dreaming about them. I've seen quite a few reviewers swapping them for Duncans.

- The push-knob boost feature is pretty interesting

- Also one of the most beautiful extended-range guitars I've ever seen, and, again, I've only found one available to order

- Floating tremolo for more expressions when playing

One concern I've had about the Majesty is its shorter 25.5" scale compared with the Legator's multiscale. I've heard that can become an issue on the lowest string, especially with lower tunings, but how noticeable is it actually in practice? Is it a genuine problem? Cause I want my lower strings to be agile as well, so I don't want to thicken them up a lot. But I think thickening up the 7th string to have decent tension on the 25.5" scale wouldn't be a big problem.

What matters most to me is playability. I want something that feels smooth and comfortable for technical stuff, but even if you told me they have the same playability or even if you told me "x has better n than y" I still wouldn't know how to choose!

For anyone who's played either or, ideally both:

- Which has the more comfortable neck for technical playing?

- How noticeable is the difference in upper-fret access?

- Does the multiscale feel awkward during fast runs across strings, or does it become natural quickly?

- Which would you personally choose, and why?

I want to know what I'd miss out if I bought one over the other, and how impactful it'd be.

The Ninja is intriguing because it feels a bit more special and different from what I already own. But the Majesty is a Majesty.

I'd love to hear from actual owners, especially anyone who's spent time with both. Thanks!

DISCUSSION Cant tell if its hearing loss, my ADHD, my autism, my gear, the room or what...My ears are constantly "tricking" me. NEVER satisfied with my sound anymore.

I've been a home player for 20 years. So Ill crank it up but not overly loud and only a few times month at any kind of remotely "elevated" level

The room I am forced to play in due to space is 10ft by 20ish ft small bedroom/large walk in closet

Hardwood floors, 2 large full size wooden clothes cabinets on one wall

The other wall completely covered in clothes hanging and shelving

A few years ago I had a horrible flu and Ive dealt with fluid stuck in my ears ever since. Cant afford insurance or a doctor visit. So all day Im "popping" my ears to drain them. Sometimes they wont unclog and other days totally clear

Then, I have a myriad of pedals and sound and styles that I play and two different guitars that sound entirely different

On top of all that, I have a really bad audio processing disorder, I think related to my inattentive ADHD. Im also high functioning autistic and deal with sensory "overload" as well.

SO ALL THAT CONTEXT TO SAY, Ive gotten into a habit in the last 6 months of realizing I'm NEVER happy with my sound ever anymore. Ive got everything I need to do basically any sound or style, but my tonal preferences seem to change nightly. Im going insane literally spending 4 hours at a time twiddling with knobs and EQ because no matter what, NOTHING EVER SOUNDS "RIGHT"

And its not a simple "walk away and come back" - my ears "lose objectivity" FAST. So that doesnt matter.

Im losing my mind here. Spend 3 hours chasing a sound, never quite getting there but close enough. Come back the next day with same settings and everything and it sounds.... wrong

Now obviously I know our ears hear things differently at different times and gear can be affected due to power fluctuations and things like that

This stuff is nothing new to any of us but this feels like a particularly egregious and extreme problem on my end. Ive become a damn mental patient endlessly chasing the dragon mirage in the desert, never able to get there, cuz I can't discern what the root of my supposed aural problem at whatever moment is.

I know this is a typical guitarist meme of never being satisfied with your sound, but this is legit a fucking problem and Im losing it here.

Is it me. Is it the gear. Is it the room. Am I simply processing the sound badly tonight. Etc etc etc

Holy fuck im losing my mind

For 15 years I never had a problem. In the last few ive honestly spent thousands of hourse at this point turning knobs endlessly....

QUESTION US Guitarist, strat

Ok, I'm trying to find one guy I used to watch on youtube.

US Guitarist, strat. That doesn't narrow it down much, I know. 😂

He's a blues/jazz guy, late 60s now, tall, grey hair and beard, handsome man.

Not super famous, but known among players - which I why I hope you can help me!

I tried searching on youtube but mother of God! It's all AI videos now. It's impossible to find anything. I'd estimate 3/5 results are "Smokey blues for work" or that type of shit.

Anyway, any ideas?

QUESTION DAW and Live Cab experiments

Hi all,

So I’ve been experimenting with Tone3000 but don’t feel like I’m getting the same vibes when playing through my Yamaha HS7 speakers in the room as with playing through my amp - original Fender Champion 100 (I was young and it was pretty in all white with a black strat 😅)

I recently decided to try playing a Line 6 M13 directly into the amp’s Power In and was surprised that it didn’t sound completely terrible. This was with the M13’s RAT (“classic distortion”) and Boss MT-2 (“heavy distortion”) copies and some volume levelling.

My questions:

  1. If I wanted to experiment further by sending my guitar through tone 3000 and using amp heads (good place to also split the signal and record dry), what volume do I need to be leaving my interface (MOTU Ultralite AVB) and do I need to do any impedance matching before I hit the Power In? I have a Palmer Daccapo Re-Amp box if that would help.

  2. I expected from my reading that the volume would be too low but it was in fact too high coming out of the M13. In lieu of using a preamp, is the RAT essentially serving as one? Are there any downsides to this or am I in any danger? Can I put any other preamp in between e.g. Mackie 1202 (daft punk model)?

  3. Are there any guitar players known for playing without a preamp? Examples of sounds?

  4. Any thoughts on the Fender Champion 100? Is it just not that great for anything other than cleans or by bypassing the digital preamp and just using the analog poweramp am I actually getting more out of this amp that is probably not likely to have much resale potential?

  5. I’m considering adding a Moog Minotaur into the chain for its low pass filter - any implications of this on the signal flow and impedance issues?

My main guitar is a Reverend Descent Baritone W with Railhammer Cleancut neck and Nuevo 90 bridge tuned to Bb standard. I’m trying to play somewhere between Early Suede, KMFDM and Alice in Chains.

Any help or suggestions for new experiments is very gratefully appreciated!

QUESTION A small ask of help from students creating their own guitar amp

Hello there! I am a student from the Silesian University of Technology. Me and some friends are actively designing and building a new type of modern guitar tube amps, which we plan on selling in the future. We haven't seen anything like this on the market, and we think that your community might get interested in this. Alas, for it to be as good as it can be, we need some data. Could you please take our quick survey? It would mean the world to us if you could spare some time to fill it. Thank you for your time!

QUESTION Help wanted on a University Course Project related to Guitar

Hello there! I am a Finnish university student currently working on a group project where we have to come up with a new product to the lineup of an existing brand. We chose Neural DSP and our fictitious product is a guitar/bass effects processor that can be integrated into an existing instrument. Part of the course is to get potential customer feedback from any place we see fit using a questionaire. So, I am humbly asking any guitarists here to help out and answer a few questions related to the features and feasibility of the product. Any answers are welcome, no matter how critical!

QUESTION Why? Why must this happen?

We amateurs all know that feeling. Sitting there on your bed playing random shit on a random tuesday afternoon and then it happens. The most beautiful, soul ascending pinch harmonic ever. On accident.

You try to recreate it to no avail. Minutes and minutes go by as you try to mimic what you did to achieve such perfection. And then it never happens again.

And here i am, typing this out in the slight hope that those who were the first to even conceive the idea of a 6-string, the one and only John Guitars, might give an answer to the question all of us have been asking.

Why must we go through this? Why?
