GEAR What 7 years of sobriety looks like 😍😅

Post image
4.0k Upvotes

Covid had me in a pretty dark place but I’m proud to say I haven’t touched the drink in just about 7 years. To say it was the best decision I’ve ever made is an understatement - who knows where I’d be today. I picked up a guitar at 12 and it’s always been an outlet for me. Unfortunately, I slowly transition from guitar and music to booze and hadn’t played consistently for a long time.

Welp, now you could say I’m addicted to music more than I ever have been. Play every day, in a band, GAS is in full effect 😂. Do I owe my sobriety in part to music? Hell yea I do. I even owe some of it to all you fine people putting up with my stupid gear questions throughout the years.

Just wanted to share my collection. If anyone is struggling, stay strong. You got this. Shit, message me if you want to talk.

DISCUSSION What are some songs that were recorded with a different guitar to what most people think was used?

The Les Paul is so heavily associated with Jimmy Page and I'm certain the Stairway to Heaven solo is responsible for countless Les Paul sales despite the solo being recorded on a Telecaster. I'm also certain Cliffs of Dover was responsible for a handful of strat sales even though the bulk of that song was recorded on an ES-335.

So it has me wondering, what are some other examples of this?

GEAR My 1973 Ovation Breadwinner

I had no idea that my grandpa used to play guitar until he pulled this and 6 other guitars out of the back of his closet and gave all of them to me the other day. This is a 1973 Ovation Breadwinner in excellent condition. I can’t believe how nice this guitar is. Tbh It looks a little goofy to me but the quality of this guitar and how well it plays makes up for it. I just wanted to share this guitar on here because I figured somone would appreciate it.

Sometimes buying stuff in the second hand market can be much better. I’ve always wanted this Epiphone Lee Malia LP Custom since it came out a decade ago. It is quite elusive especially in my previous country so I didn’t have the chance to own one back then.

Last week, I got a pretty solid deal and the parts were already upgraded by the previous owner, from locking tuners, bone nut, hard case, and even high quality electronics.

All I really had to do was change the strings and play it. This guitar is so versatile, damn, from cleans to blues, and obviously to chugging riffs. It can do almost everything (except trem which I don’t use anyway) 🤣

I am very impressed with this guitar and now I am on the hunt for the more elusive Lee Malia Explorer.

QUESTION Favorite guitarist of all time?

Make a list if you want to about your favorite guitarists (like top ten or something. Or just your favorite one in general. Doesn't have to be list) I DO NOT KNOW WHERE ELSE TO POST THIS. If you do happen to have somewhere else to recommend me towards. Please tell me. Thanks for reading.

QUESTION Real or fake Zakk Wylde Epiphone

Hello, to make it short and quick guy is asking 550 euro for this guitar, I’ve wanted one of these a while now but seen there are many fakes around. If anyone could help me out here and let me know if it’s actually worth the money. It has signs of use. That’s about it.

We have a 3 year old and I can't trust to leave the stand out exposed and I get tired of pulling cases out.

I have a String Swing coming but until then, this is my solution.

Easy to grab, and protected.

I'm proud of this. It's far from perfect, there are multiple mistakes, my timing isn't perfectly in the pocket, the bends are out of tune. I'll keep iterating on it. But hopefully this can give you an idea of what to expect from ~1 year of dedicated practice as an older player.

I have attending jam nights lately and haven't had the guts to play guitar on stage yet. If you heard something of this quality at a jam / open mic would you consider it acceptable?

I'm open to feedback but I'm mostly posting this for discussion, I basically know where I need to improve on this and it's just a matter of grinding.

Possibly the most gorgeous sounding Strat I've ever had the pleasure to play. And now it's mine.

It's divine, I can't even express how well rounded it is.

QUESTION Do you have single favorite brand of guitar or do you appreciate a variety?

I have a Gretch, a Jackson, a Gibson, an Ibanez, an Epiphone, a very customized BCRich and a Ktaxon - the cheapest guitar available on Amazon 2 years ago, I practice my guitar maintenance and customization on it. I like them all, some more than others, and I continue to find guitars that I like. Do you have a favorite brand or do you just buy whatever hits with you? Or maybe you have a favorite type - my Ibanez and my Jackson have basically identical necks. I'm just curious.

QUESTION What are your favorite resources for learning on your own?

• Upvotes

So I've been playing for about 9 months now, and I've got a teacher as well. Which is great, but due to centre regulations or whatever I can't request "inappropriate" songs. So a lot of songs I wanna learn just fly out the window

I've tried YouTube videos with tabs, but I find it's not so helpful for me. Like I can actually see how my teacher's hands move and it makes sense but it's not the same through a screen. Any suggestions? Or should I just suck it up...

GEAR Eastman / Gibson - Relative Merits

• Upvotes

I have had an Eastman T486 for the last 7 years - pictures attached. It's a high quality instrument. For me, it was and is still my most expensive guitar and the most 'premium' one I own.

I have never owned a Gibson of any sort, but have played quite a few (incl Custom Shop) on my way to the Eastman purchase, and afterwards. (Some have been downright lovely and amazing, and a few have not.)

I'd love to hear anyones thoughts on playing both, and what the relative merits are of each experience have been - and keep it purely to the guitars themselves.

(Ie: Would love to avoid any slanging matches about how buying US is inherently superior to 'overseas' etc. Or any of the other stuff about how high end US brands are just a rip off and how a Harley Benton or a Firefly is just as good etc. Would love to confine the thread to what you think re the pros and cons of the actual guitars you have played! That said, I do of course understand that the brand names can count for a lot, in terms of one's desire for the instrument and also one's profile as a jobbing musician etc)

I'll start: the Seymour Duncans (59 bridge, Jazz neck) on The Eastman are totally solid, but the Gibson humbuckers I have played have from time to time - on a couple of SGs in particular - been very special.

GEAR My guitar Collection/other instruments.

Going through a pretty heartbreaking separation currently and I decided to treat myself to a new Taylor 114ce. Had to show it here but couldn't neglect my other instruments. Lol was recently gifted the sax and violin so I haven't really gotten them properly set up and learn them. Im mostly just a guitar player.

This Taylor is awesome btw plays beautifully and the action was actually really good right from the store. I spent like 3 hours cycling through guitars in the acoustic room in guitar center and I just kept going back to it. It sounds and plays great and very comfortable. She's a Beut.

DISCUSSION I want a Novo Serus J, talk me out of it( I can’t afford one anyway)

As the title, I have mad GAS for one of these, I have the usual Stratocaster, Gibson les Paul and a epiphone Sheraton but I don’t have an offset or a guitar with p90’s problem is they start at 4 k, just watched Phil Knight strip one and he didn’t seem that blown away by it, I can’t really justify sinking 4 k into a guitar, especially as I’m a casual user but!!! I might, tell me why I shouldn’t buy one and what would be a good substitute
