M4F 33 [M4F] Norway/Europe/Anywhere – Is there anyone out there?
Hello, whoever you are.
I'm a guy born in 1993, living in Norway, and I've reached that uncomfortable point where I've noticed the older I get, the faster the years seem to disappear.
I'm okay on my own. I'd rather remain single than be with someone simply for the sake of not being alone. But I'd hate to look back one day and realize I wanted someone beside me and never made the effort to find her.
So... is there anyone out there?
A little about the creature you'd be dating
I'm 183 cm, with long hair, a beard and moustache. If I leave my hair down, being called Jesus isn't unusual. I also have tattoos on my hands and arms. I don't regret them, and I'll probably get more someday.
My mother is American, my father Finnish, and I was born and raised in Norway. I've never felt like I belong entirely to one nationality; I'm just me, with pieces from several places.
I speak English and Norwegian fluently and can communicate semi-fluently with my Danish and sheepish neighbours. If being with you means learning another language, I'm willing. Just be patient while I inevitably butcher it for a while.
I'm extremely introverted. If nothing requires me to leave the house, there's a good chance I won't. I'm still up for camping or exploring, but staying home, cooking, playing games and doing our own things beside each other sounds pretty good too.
I value comfortable silence; simply having someone there can mean more than filling every second with conversation. At a distance, though, I enjoy texting.
And please communicate directly with me.
I'm terrible at social cues. If you're upset but tell me "nothing is wrong" while expecting me to figure it out, we're both going to have a bad time. Tell me what's wrong. Tell me what you want. Ask me what I want.
I take things literally and I'm brutally honest when directly asked something. If you ask a question, I'll assume you actually want my answer.
I'm almost unrealistically patient. Missed a train and the next comes in an hour? I'll happily wait. Paradoxically, I hate being late and will happily arrive an hour early so I can relax and compose myself.
Apparently my solution to being patient is giving myself more opportunities to wait.
My humour is dark. Very dark. I don't think humour needs many sacred cows. If your reaction to a terrible joke is laughter followed by "Jesus Christ, you can't say that," we'll probably get along.
What do I actually do?
I work in a store. If I don't have anything better to do, I might as well work.
I enjoy idle and long, drawn-out games. Give me progression, optimization and an unnecessary grind and I'll probably be entertained. Sometimes the process is more fun than the end.
I'm a Magic: The Gathering player, enjoy card games and tactics, and also play Hearthstone. I haven't read many traditional novels lately, but I'm still an avid reader. Manga, manhwa and manhua have become my little escape.
I also love worldbuilding: characters, worlds, magic systems and story ideas that accumulate in notes whether or not they ever become finished stories.
And I love cooking. More on why that's important later.
What am I looking for?
Ultimately, my best friend whom I'm also hopelessly attracted to.
Someone kind, affectionate, communicative and willing to listen while expecting the same from me. A relationship should be give and take, with effort from both people.
Physical affection matters to me. I'm someone who'll give you an unprompted hug simply because you're there. If you dislike physical contact or always need physical distance, we probably aren't compatible.
I'd prefer another indoor-oriented person who's still willing to occasionally emerge from our cave and confirm that trees continue to exist.
I'd also like someone curious and open-minded. My attitude is don't judge it until you've tried it. I'll form my own opinion after experiencing something rather than inheriting someone else's. "That's weird, therefore it's bad" isn't an attitude I enjoy.
My philosophy is somewhere between "sometimes things just go wrong" and "prepare for the worst, hope for the best." Figure out what can be fixed and carry on.
The practical compatibility stuff
I'd prefer someone reasonably close to my age; a little younger or older is fine.
I want a child someday. One would make me perfectly happy; I could probably be negotiated into two. If you definitely don't want children, I respect that, but we're looking for different futures.
I've never made that lifelong commitment before. I'm open to making things official someday, but I'd prefer a courthouse or small gathering over a giant ceremony.
I'm not religious, but I'm fine dating someone who is, provided neither of us forces our beliefs on the other. If you're religious, prepare for approximately four thousand curious questions about your faith.
I don't smoke, although I've promised myself a pipe at 60. Hard drugs are a no. I occasionally enjoy whisky, brandy, cognac or akevitt.
I'm firmly monogamous. If we're pursuing a relationship, I want us to be pursuing each other, not maintaining alternatives in case something better appears. Cheating is an absolute dealbreaker, including a history of it.
I'm willing to relocate for the right person, although I'd prefer you eventually wanted to come to Norway. Europe would be easiest, but I'm open to long distance and most of the world. You can absolutely be American—my mother is—but I don't want to live in the United States now or in the foreseeable future. Unless things change dramatically, relocation there isn't on my list.
One unusually important thing: food
I have severe coeliac disease. This isn't a dietary preference. Tiny amounts of gluten contamination can make me ill.
You don't have to give up bread, but I need you to understand cross-contamination and take cleaning seriously.
On the other hand, voluntarily join me in the gluten-free life and you've unlocked the personal-chef relationship perk. I genuinely love cooking and would be very happy feeding you.
Attraction
Physical attraction matters alongside emotional compatibility.
I don't have a height preference. Short, average or tall can all be attractive to me. I tend to prefer slimmer/average builds and pale/fair complexions.
Those are preferences, not a character-creation screen where you need the correct sliders. Attraction is something I discover when I see and get to know someone.
I'm happy to exchange pictures. You might look at me and decide Jesus isn't your type. That's fair.
I've done this twice before
I've had two relationships. My first was with someone very sporty and athletic. Where we connected, things were wonderful, but there were also parts of each other we simply didn't understand. Eventually we drifted apart.
My second began too quickly, before we'd properly established what we wanted from our futures. Eventually it became clear those futures weren't the same, and I ended things rather than dragging out something that couldn't become what either of us wanted.
I learned from both.
I've had two. I'd rather number three be the last.
So, who are you?
Maybe you're in Norway, elsewhere in Europe, or halfway across the planet wondering why you're still reading the ramblings of some long-haired, tattooed Norwegian-Finnish-American-ish man who plays Magic and promises gluten-free food.
I'd like you to be kind. Affectionate. Communicative. Curious. Capable of laughing at terrible things. Comfortable spending a quiet evening indoors. Someone with her own thoughts and interests who isn't looking for a man to simply agree with everything she says.
I don't want pushy, snobbish or rude people, someone obsessed with status and showing off, games, cheating, or an ex perpetually lurking in our relationship.
I'm not looking for perfection. God knows you wouldn't be getting it in return.
I'm looking for someone whose imperfections work with mine.
Someone I can cook for. Someone who'll tell me when I'm being an idiot. Someone I can send stupid messages to from the other side of the world until, hopefully, we're eventually sitting beside each other instead. Someone I can hug for absolutely no reason. Someone who can sit in silence with me without wondering whether something is wrong.
Someone whose language I might initially speak terribly, but who'll laugh with me while I learn. Someone with whom ordinary life feels a little less ordinary.
Time is going to pass regardless of whether I make this post. So I might as well send a message out into the void and see if someone answers.
If you've reached the end and think we might get along, tell me about yourself. Don't worry about constructing the perfect opening message. Give me something genuine and I'll take genuine over polished any day.
And perhaps tell me something you enjoy that most people would consider weird.
It seems like a good place to start.
