Wanted to see what others thought. Started my fromsoft experience with Sekiro, loved it immensely- kicked my ass at the start, but when it all clicked it felt magnificent.
Elden Ring has been my second game, so I wanted to withhold judgment for a while so I'm not just "oh the first game I played is the best" etc.
In the DLC now, beat Malenia no-hit, so I feel I can say it now: Sekiro's combat loop is just way more fun, man. I do like Elden Ring to be fair, but the main thing thats been getting at me is the dead space.
There's bound to be a "your turn my turn" element to combat in these games, I have no issue with that. But Sekiro deals with this much better- whether you're on the offense or defense, posture damage means you're progressing the fight, bringing the enemy closer to defeat. For Elden Ring, if the enemy is attacking, and you dodge perfectly... you're back to square one.
The end result is that in Sekiro I was hoping the bosses would pull out their signature, harder moves. Sure, it might kill me- but usually these would be fast attacks chained together in a long combo, meaning if I played it right I'd deal massive posture damage.
In Elden Ring, I find myself groaning when an enemy pulls out a long combo. A short combo with an opening and a long combo with an opening are identical in terms of how much they move the fight forward, the latter is just... longer. And when an enemy chains combos it's just frustrating, as I have to wait even longer to start dishing damage back.
The same goes for aggression. If an enemy responds to your aggression with a counterattack in Sekiro, that's fine- just deal posture damage by deflecting. In Elden Ring, it's just your turn to wait again, dodging about.
I still am having a great time in Elden Ring, but I can't help but notice how much better a design Sekiro's deflection is for this type of combat. No dead space, always an option to move the fight forward, and lots of incentive to jump into the face of danger. Elden Ring can sometimes feel tedious in contrast.
TL;DR: Deflecting is a far more engaging mechanic than dodging for defense. Dodging gets boring because successfully dodging doesn't impact how far you are in the fight, while deflecting does.
