I’m a horrible person!

I’m a horrible person, but this is so much fun. Once a month I visit all the banks in my area and grab whatever Eisenhower dollars or Kennedy halves they may have. Sometimes I hit, sometimes I don’t.

I keep all the Ikes but only keep the 90 or 40% JFKS (if I’m lucky). Here’s the fun part. Instead of returning the rest to the bank, I just use them to pay for all my normal daily activities.

Apparently most of the people in the service industry have never seen a JFK half. One guy at Chick-Fil-A took my JFK’s and asked me what they were. Another younger girl at Walgreens just stared at them trying to read the print and figure out their value. The best was an older Brazilian man working at BK looked puzzled and called his manager to ask what they were. He kept asking her “are these big quarters? Are these big quarters?”

My favorite is the look on my wife’s face when paid $37 at our local pharmacy using JFK halves. It seems like everywhere I go, paying with JFK’s causing confusion and curiosity.

The way I look at it is I am introducing them back into circulation and educating people about our historic coins.

It was down facing and on the bottom right row, I put it there for the image. It’s the only heavy roll in the box so probably the only benji. Anyways Ill crack it open after work.

Does anyone else save them and are they worth collecting or have any additional value over face? Thoughts?

I lost count but I'm 8 or 9 boxes in so far on quarters. Just picked up this solid box of DOIs from my bank. No enders, hopefully at least one is hiding in the middle!

Jackpot! Abandoned box = HUGE rookie mistake

My final box pickup last week was an epic, and totally unexpected, box of halves.

This was a small Loomis-supplied CU branch I visit regularly, but don’t order boxes from. They sometimes have $100 or so in MWR in the vault - and this time they had $500 available when I asked about halves (I always ask!)

The teller told me someone had special ordered it, came it to pick it up, opened it at the teller window - and rejected it ‘because they’re all new. I only want the old stuff’

“Are you sure you still want it?” she asks me (as manager is wrangling it from the vault).

I’d already said yes, and enthusiastically nodded yes again - and was extremely happy to see a waffle box full of 2026 - with privy enders!

So, dear hunter, where ever you are… to quote Vivian Ward:

“Big mistake. Big. Huge”

All I can say is ‘Thank you very much!’

Needles to say, I will continue to search every box or roll I can find. One hunter’s trash is, indeed, another’s treasure.

Good luck everyone, and happy hunting !

Jackpot! Finally found a use for my opthalmascope!

Post image

When starting medical school they tell all of us we absolutely need to buy this $700 opthalma/otto-scope set. Which we do. But since very few of us are bound to be plane-flying ophthalmologists (real stereotype), we all proceed to leave it in our drawers, save a couple times during APM.

Fast forward to last night, the battery goes out in my loupe. Of course I have none to replace them. But then, Eureka! I remember I have this stupid thing sitting a drawer. So I dust it off, charge it up, and bam!

Works fantastically for checking for errors. Lighting is phenomenal, magnification is totally fine, and after 6 years it finally has a purpose.

The dime gods show a little kindness on a Monday hunt

I was able to pick up a little less than the equivalent of 1 box of dimes ($225, I think?) from the two local branches of my go-to CRH bank. No complaints with those results, although the additional $350 or so in nickels and halves that I picked up skunked me...

Post image

Im pretty new to coin collecting and im having a hard time figuring out it this penny is just a regular 1982 D or if it could possibly be a 1982 D small date. Its hard to tell from pictures but the number look smaller than my other 1982 pennies.

1982 cents: do you weigh first or check the date first?

Sorting through a batch of 1982 cents and trying to find the fastest routine. The zinc ones are 2.5g and the copper ones are 3.1g, so weighing weeds out the zinc fast — but then you still have to sort the copper ones by large date vs small date. Do you weigh first and only look closely at the coppers, or check the date first and weigh only the small dates? What order saves you the most time when you're going through a lot of them?

Quarters Results from a bag of quarters.

I broke it down into $100 baggies and it turns out I got an extra quarter right off the bat. Found a Westpoint, a business strike NIFC San Francisco, and a well loved non silver proof. A couple of DDRs. A couple of die cracks, the 1996 has then front and back. And a whole bunch of die chips. More than will fit on the 20 image limit.
