Has anyone experienced something like this? Did you find your way back?
As a disclaimer, I don't have an official diagnosis yet but have worked with a professional who diagnosed me as "on the bipolar spectrum". I'm an immigrant and due to travel between my two countries, my access to healthcare has been fragmented and I'm waiting to be assessed by the NHS.
Onto the post. I used to live in India until I was 22 and looking back, I think I was basically constantly hypomanic from at least age 17/18. I then moved to the UK and my hypomania was triggered less and less and I started to lean towards depression (I think because of the weather). For about 4 years from 17 to 21/22 though, I wrote SO MUCH, I constantly had a journal on me, words just flowed out of me and I honestly think I wrote really good stuff. Poetry, stories, scripts, I even started a novel. Of course I never completed anything long form because I'd excitedly start a new project and my motivation would fall off a cliff after a few days or I'd move onto something else. It was a highly creative time of my life, I was so active on social media sharing all my thoughts and I felt awesome about myself.
Cut to today, it's been 5+ years of trying to get back to writing and I'm starting to accept my writer mode was due to a hypomania powered creativity which I may never be able to intentionally bring back. This makes me very sad, I always dreamt of writing and publishing at some point in my life. Now my hypomania is directed at my work and organising my life and I've basically not written anything for my thesis in a year.
I know that if I really want to write then I will sit my ass down and write, but I feel like 1) I actually can't really control the flow of my hypomanic energy positively - what I mean by this is, I do stop the flow of my hypomanic energy from going towards destructive places such as drinking and sex (I used to engage in a lot of destructive hypomania, that's how I got my stories to write too), but I genuinely don't know if I can control it's flow towards something? like when I'm hypomanic, pushing myself to write instead of doing whatever I'm focused on doing; 2) even if I do write, which I have done a few select times in the last few years too, I have to build a whole new practice that doesn't depend on the 'rush' of hypomania. I never truly built this, so my skillset and discipline does not match the outputs I produced in an altered state, but which have nevertheless set my expectations from myself, and 3) I have no idea how my creativity and passions will work once I'm stable anyway. Like I may just be a totally different person??
Anyway tldr: I tried for 5+ years to return to a highly creative time in my life and I'm now starting to accept it was fueled by me being constantly hypomanic and I probably may never be able to return to it :( Has anybody been able to "return" to a past self that was powered by a mood episode? Is grieving your past selves just a part of living with this condition?
