In Indonesia, we have an ideology that has five vows or pancasila, which can be translated as the five silas.

These vows mean these respectevily:

  1. Believe in God

  2. A just and civilized humanity

  3. The unity of indonesia

  4. Democracy Guided by the Inner Wisdom in the Unanimity Arising from Deliberations amongst Representatives

  5. Social Justice for All the People of Indonesia

What's a normal phrase in your language that sounds completely mundane to you, but translates to something bizarrely in English?

Собаку съел. Which translates to "I ate a dog"

To me this means "I've mastered this skill" or "I am an old hand at this"

Culture What is the general perception of left-handed people in your country?

Post image

Growing up in England left-handed (or footed) people were considered cool and special however this sentiment kind of disappears as you head into adulthood. This is a relatively new phenomenon I guess though as my mother who grew up in the 1960s/70s and she says back then left-handedness was seen as a condition to be corrected. How is left-handedness treated in your country?

How big is “Dune” in your country and do you guys think it will be the LoTR or Star Wars of the 2020s?

In Turkey cinemas were packed in Dune 2 and for Dune 3 even if it has been on pre-sales for like 3 days or something the cinemas are half sold out at most places like the IMAX’s in my city are mostly full.On top of that people that watched it do love it because it has lot’s of middle eastern and islamic influences like the music, clothing, religions, wars etc.The books are also fully translated and are known. It isn’t as big as LoTR or Star Wars yet but i’ll bet it will be almost or more big compared to those 2 if they make more series,spin-offs etc.

Language Are there many words in your language that translate into English as two or more different words, while in your native language they are represented by just one word?

In Russian, there is no distinction between the concepts of "kill" and "murder"—there is only one word, *убийство* (killing/murder). Honestly, I’m still not always sure which English word to use when translating, or why English makes such a distinction.

I’m from the Netherlands and personally spend only about €0.33 per month on tampons. I’m curious how much other women spend around the world.

Do you find random working lighters all over the place

Post image

If not lighters, what do you commonly find that’s not strictly trash? Maybe these aren’t common, but I’m sure there’s probably other things that are commonly discarded without actually being litter in your country. For example, where I live it is very common to see old barbecues, sometimes still with propane tanks, out on the curb to be taken for free as well as bicycles. I once actually got a free pool table that way because the previous owner made things worse trying to fix it.

I find lighters, seemingly lost, all the time. I’m still waiting to find a random street zippo but my friend found one. The two of the top are actually jet torches most likely for meth, as the bigger one can actually make the pipe, or so I’m told. A lot of people smoke cigarettes, a lot of people smoke weed and other things. There’s also a lot of homeless that tend to misplaced things. Is this something a person might lose in your country and not care to look for or they’re just not a lot of people who smoke things in public, or do services clean up better where you live? To be fair, I find a lot of these gardening so I would be that service cleaning up. Why or why not do you think people lose these where you are? I find it kind of funny. The only thing more likely to get stolen than a big lighter is a big pen or a carpenters pencil. You set a carpenters pencil down anywhere or you don’t show up to work one day all your carpenters pencils will be gone. It doesn’t matter how many you bought. Carpenters pencils are only $0.20 but you’d think they were made of gold.

The redesign of our old coins made them harder to distinguish.

The old coins had distinct colors, sizes, and textures, making them easy to identify. The new ones look so similar to each other that they're harder to tell apart, (old top, new bottom).

I noticed Latinos are very unrepresented, especially on an international basis. But they're the ones that can swing elections in the US, which subsequently affects the world.

Australia has over 1000 "big things" around the country, mostly in regional and rural areas. Famous ones (pictured) include the Big Banana, the Big Merino and the Big Pineapple.

These big things remain oddly popular places to visit both for local and international tourists.

Culture Is there a form of state-funded advance child maintenance payment in your country if the other separated parent does not pay, or pays too little?

Following a post on r/GirlDinnerDiaries, we had an in-depth discussion on the subject in our board game group with a couple we’re friends with from the US. Should the state provide some form of maintenance to single parents if their former partner fails to do so, or does not pay the full amount?

Politics People from outside Israel, how do you think another Netanyahu term could affect your country, if at all?

Post image

Israel’s recent election seems likely to lead to coalition negotiations, and one possible outcome is Benjamin Netanyahu remaining prime minister. I’m not asking who people support, I’m curious how people in different countries think this could affect their own nation.

For example, would it affect your country’s diplomacy, security concerns, trade, energy prices, relations with Middle Eastern countries, migration, or public opinion? Or do you think it would make little practical difference where you live?

How is Halloween celebrated in other countries? 🎃👻

I'm genuinely curious about how Halloween is celebrated in other countries!

Here in the Netherlands, Halloween isn't really a big deal. Sure, we have some Halloween parties, themed events, and the occasional decorated house here and there, but that's pretty much where it ends.

We do try, but for some reason, we're never particularly good at adopting American holidays. 😂

Whenever I see how Americans celebrate Halloween, with entire neighborhoods covered in decorations, trick-or-treating, and people planning their costumes weeks in advance, I honestly think it looks amazing!

So I'm curious: What country are you from, and how is Halloween celebrated there? Is it a huge event, or is it just another ordinary day?
