Controversial šŸ”Ø I am a Queer from Palestine, Ask me anything!

I'm translesbian (24MtF), I have been openly queer for a while and I have dating my gf for years here (She is also a Palestinian), we are planning on moving abroad and marrying there. I can't live here after experiencing countless hateful incidents even disowned by my family and losing all contacts i had with them. I haven't done any plastic surgeries yet but I have been taking estrogen for a while, I do crossdress all the time though and I got a new feminine name although I haven't been able to change it legally.

I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Israeli politics. Ask me anything about the elections

I did one of these a couple of months ago, and today is probably a good day to do another one.

I have a bachelor's degree in political science, and I worked for a few election campaigns before COVID hit. I have switched careers since then, but I still consider Israeli politics a passion of mine.

You can ask me whatever you want, but instead of answering any personal opinions about Israel - Palestine or any thoughts about other Israel-related subjects, I would rather get questions about the Israeli elections and general questions about current Israeli politics.

Travel Do most people gain or lose weight while visiting your country?

Chances are, if you look at my flair, that will tell you all you need to know. The food system in the United States is messed up, portions are massive, many foods have way more sugar than they should, and much of the country is built in a way that makes getting exercise a very intentional decision. Consequently, the U.S. has a reputation as a country where most tourists gain weight. That's not to say it's totally impossible to visit and eat relatively healthy, but it requires more discipline and a higher budget than most other countries.

How about yours?

Politics Have you ever come across people with Chinese supremacist beliefs or any other groups similar to this? How often have you come across them?

I understand that this is not one of the more pertinent issues in Western countries in general because Chinese people are a disenfranchised ethnic minority there. However, I was a native in Mainland China, and unfortunately, I grew up around a lot of these people. They are also very well-known in the country I am currently living in. In my experience, these beliefs are definitely *not very* uncommon among Chinese expats and tourists to other countries. I'm curious about how many people with such beliefs (Chinese or not) you have encountered where you live, or if you're aware that such a group exists at all.

Big disclaimer that many Chinese people are NOT like this so please don't assume that any Chinese person automatically believe these things. But views I consider Chinese supremacist include:

- Chinese people are inherently/genetically superior, including being inherently more intelligent, hardworking, and honest/"simple in character" than other ethnicities... these people see different ethnicities like how most people see different breeds of dogs

- The whole thing about the "body odor gene" (even though everyone would smell bad after sweating and poor hygiene)

- There was this bullshit hypothesis that Chinese/East Asian people did not descend from Africans unlike everyone else, the scientist who came up with it has proven it wrong himself yet it was portrayed as fact in a Chinese museum I visited in the past 3 years

- Chinese society is not full of evil and corruption unlike other societies

- Chinese people are less prone to mental health issues because of resilience or some shit (lol I wish)

- Chinese culture is much more civilized and sophisticated than any other culture

- This includes the Chinese language, and languages like Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese are basically dumbed down Chinese "dialects"

- Chinese people basically invented everything important, not people from other cultures

- Traditional Chinese medicine is true wisdom and actually sophisticated while Western medicine is primitive bullshit

- There is nothing impressive to see in any countries outside of China---every time they encounter something impressive in other countries, they react with "we have that in China" (or more commonly, "we have that but better in China").

These views are not a super new thing that only arised in the past few years, I have heard these views a lot growing up in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I understand that these people are usually not intentionally malicious, but their views are problematic nonetheless. In Singapore (a common destination for Chinese tourists and expats), we encounter them online and sometimes in real life relatively often, and locals (and Chinese immigrants with more realistic views too) are rightfully sick of them. They complain about how Singapore (a completely separate, multicultural country) is not more like China, hate on other local ethnicities here (characterizing them as lazy, horrible people, or both), hate on local Chinese who are not good at the Chinese language for "abandoning their cultural roots", and call Singapore "slope county" (implying that it's basically an insignificant county in China).

I do not intend to sow any discord or further any agenda on hating/disliking Chinese people. I just wonder how much people in various countries, especially those who are not involved in Chinese (ethnic/nationality/language) communities, are aware of people with such views or have interacted with them. After all, many Chinese expats with these views just don't end up learning the language of the country they stay in very well or trying to integrate into local communities. Feel free to share about any other group that may have comparable views to these people too.

Politics People from outside Israel, how do you think another Netanyahu term could affect your country, if at all?

Post image
69 Upvotes

Israel’s recent election seems likely to lead to coalition negotiations, and one possible outcome is Benjamin Netanyahu remaining prime minister. I’m not asking who people support, I’m curious how people in different countries think this could affect their own nation.

For example, would it affect your country’s diplomacy, security concerns, trade, energy prices, relations with Middle Eastern countries, migration, or public opinion? Or do you think it would make little practical difference where you live?

If AI suddenly stopped responding indefinitely, how would you, your career field, and/or your country be affected?

I work in the Software Engineering space, suffice it to say, we'd be fucked impacted greatly. In my personal life, I'd say AI is used here and there: "How do I fix my washer?" "How do I take care of an orchid?" "Make me a workout schedule." "Nutrition advice." .. things of that nature. I do often do SE projects on the side, some of them are AI dominated, but not all of them. Diversifying skills and all that.

How about y'all?

From an American lens, things can be distorted when looking outside of the country. So, I'd rather ask than assume.

AI was not used in the drafting of this description nor title.

Culture Is there a form of state-funded advance child maintenance payment in your country if the other separated parent does not pay, or pays too little?

Following a post on r/GirlDinnerDiaries, we had an in-depth discussion on the subject in our board game group with a couple we’re friends with from the US. Should the state provide some form of maintenance to single parents if their former partner fails to do so, or does not pay the full amount?

Food What ā€œfake foreignā€ foods does your country have?

I’m in the US so I think we probably have more than most countries, but I’m wondering what other ones have. Here, the most famous ā€œItalianā€ food is probably spaghetti and meatballs, and general tsos chicken for Chinese. We also see tikki masala as Indian but I think it’s actually English. Do people in England think of that as Indian food too? Can you get general tsos sauce in any other country? Anything else?

How is Halloween celebrated in other countries? šŸŽƒšŸ‘»

I'm genuinely curious about how Halloween is celebrated in other countries!

Here in the Netherlands, Halloween isn't really a big deal. Sure, we have some Halloween parties, themed events, and the occasional decorated house here and there, but that's pretty much where it ends.

We do try, but for some reason, we're never particularly good at adopting American holidays. šŸ˜‚

Whenever I see how Americans celebrate Halloween, with entire neighborhoods covered in decorations, trick-or-treating, and people planning their costumes weeks in advance, I honestly think it looks amazing!

So I'm curious: What country are you from, and how is Halloween celebrated there? Is it a huge event, or is it just another ordinary day?

Economics What new thing comes out in the store for less than a dollar that you still don't understand how it's so cheap?

There is a store near my house of a certain chain that sells all kinds of things at really cheap prices (a kind of supermarket without vegetables and a selection of cheeses and milk) and they sell iced tea there for 1.90 NIS including a deposit. Without the deposit it comes out to a little over half a dollar and with the deposit less than two-thirds of a dollar.

Culture Does the homicide rate in your country vary significantly by region, and what is the primary cause of homicides in regions with high rates?

In Russia, such regions include Tuva, Chukotka, and the Amur Region. Statistical indicators here are poor, partly due to small population sizes: as a result, even a single murder has a disproportionately large impact on the overall picture. Other contributing factors include a weak economy and issues related to alcohol consumption among the local population.
