Mandatory flair with immediate effect

Post image
267 Upvotes

šŸ“¢ Mandatory Flair Is Now Live

Effective Immediately

Over the past few weeks, we asked the community for input on whether country/region flair should become mandatory.
We shared a detailed update post explaining the reasoning, and we ran a subreddit‑wide poll to gather clear feedback.

šŸ—³ļø The poll results were decisive:

  • Mandatory for posts and comments — 520 votes
  • Mandatory for posts only — 78 votes
  • Flair should remain optional — 89 votes

With over 75% of voters choosing full mandatory flair, the community has spoken clearly.

šŸš€ Starting now, flair is required for both posts and comments

To keep discussions clear, culturally grounded, and easier to answer, all users must have a country, region or nationality flair set before participating.

This change is now active:

  • Users without flair will have their posts removed
  • Users without flair will have their comments removed
  • Users using Placeholder flair (ā€œMultiple Countries (click to edit)ā€) will also have their comments and posts removed

This follows the community’s vote and the earlier update post shared here: Link to the flair poll

šŸŽÆ Why this matters

A huge portion of questions here depend on cultural, legal, or regional context.
Without flair, people often have to ask ā€œWhere are you fromā€ before they can even answer, slowing down discussions and causing confusion.

Mandatory flair fixes that.

šŸ› ļø How to set your flair

You can set or update your flair here:
How to set your flair

It takes just a few seconds.

šŸ’¬ Thank you for helping shape the subreddit

This change wasn’t made top‑down, it came directly from community input.
We appreciate everyone who voted, discussed, and helped us move toward a cleaner, more useful r/AskTheWorld.

Is Your Nation's Contribution to the World Wars Truly Recognised?

Post image

India contributed millions of soldiers to both World Wars, fighting across Europe, Africa and Asia under British rule. Yet, how much of their sacrifice is acknowledged in global history and popular culture? If soldiers from your country had made similar sacrifices, do you think the world would remember them differently?

Australia has over 1000 "big things" around the country, mostly in regional and rural areas. Famous ones (pictured) include the Big Banana, the Big Merino and the Big Pineapple.

These big things remain oddly popular places to visit both for local and international tourists.

Politics People from outside Israel, how do you think another Netanyahu term could affect your country, if at all?

Post image

Israel’s recent election seems likely to lead to coalition negotiations, and one possible outcome is Benjamin Netanyahu remaining prime minister. I’m not asking who people support, I’m curious how people in different countries think this could affect their own nation.

For example, would it affect your country’s diplomacy, security concerns, trade, energy prices, relations with Middle Eastern countries, migration, or public opinion? Or do you think it would make little practical difference where you live?

History In your opinion, what is the greatest contribution your country has made to human civilization? (Only one contribution)

Post image
168 Upvotes

(Any contribution can be mentioned, whether it is scientific, cultural, military, political or anything else)

My answer: The unitary state. Egypt has made many contributions to human civilization, but in my opinion, the most important is the unitary state system, as historians consider ancient Egypt to be the first state with this system in history. Of course, it differed in many details from modern unitary systems, but the concept was the same.

The picture is of the Narmer Palette, from the 31st century BC. It depicts King Narmer (aka King Menes) waging a war to unite the north and south of ancient Egypt. On the other side of the palette, King Narmer is depicted celebrating victory.

I’m from the Netherlands and personally spend only about €0.33 per month on tampons. I’m curious how much other women spend around the world.

I noticed Latinos are very unrepresented, especially on an international basis. But they're the ones that can swing elections in the US, which subsequently affects the world.

Language Are there many words in your language that translate into English as two or more different words, while in your native language they are represented by just one word?

• Upvotes

In Russian, there is no distinction between the concepts of "kill" and "murder"—there is only one word, *ŃƒŠ±ŠøŠ¹ŃŃ‚Š²Š¾* (killing/murder). Honestly, I’m still not always sure which English word to use when translating, or why English makes such a distinction.

Food What ā€œfake foreignā€ foods does your country have?

I’m in the US so I think we probably have more than most countries, but I’m wondering what other ones have. Here, the most famous ā€œItalianā€ food is probably spaghetti and meatballs, and general tsos chicken for Chinese. We also see tikki masala as Indian but I think it’s actually English. Do people in England think of that as Indian food too? Can you get general tsos sauce in any other country? Anything else?

Culture How common is for an average person to suddenly go homeless ,in your country?

Post image
179 Upvotes

It's shocking and sad to read instances of people having a job and roof over their head to suddenly going homeless.

Like people actually having to live on the streets ,while they were living in a home a few days back.

Even though I am still from a developing nation , and people here are unemployed and lose thier jobs as well, but the instances of having to live on the streets , asking for help from strangers is less. Like maybe thier extended family or friend let them stay .

Like not talking about people living in actual poverty but ,those who were doing fine some time back and then suddenly they have to sleep and sit on the street exposed to the harsh environments.

Are those laws which are like say people living in your home for some time ,you can't remove them easily even if they turn hostile- contribute to it .

What factors play a role in this ?

Culture In Which countries Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill duo spagetthi Westerns films were popular?

Thumbnail gallery

Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill weren't they real names. They were Italians who took these english stage names, so they name will be more marketable for international audience. In Lithuania these guys spagetthi western movies are not popular or known at all. But i believe they may have popularity in other countries. I believe in US, they are completely unknown actors and they films are not known in US, except maybe for diehard Western fans.

So question, in which countries these duo spagetthi Western movies were very popular?

Do you find random working lighters all over the place

Post image
5 Upvotes

If not lighters, what do you commonly find that’s not strictly trash? Maybe these aren’t common, but I’m sure there’s probably other things that are commonly discarded without actually being litter in your country. For example, where I live it is very common to see old barbecues, sometimes still with propane tanks, out on the curb to be taken for free as well as bicycles. I once actually got a free pool table that way because the previous owner made things worse trying to fix it.

I find lighters, seemingly lost, all the time. I’m still waiting to find a random street zippo but my friend found one. The two of the top are actually jet torches most likely for meth, as the bigger one can actually make the pipe, or so I’m told. A lot of people smoke cigarettes, a lot of people smoke weed and other things. There’s also a lot of homeless that tend to misplaced things. Is this something a person might lose in your country and not care to look for or they’re just not a lot of people who smoke things in public, or do services clean up better where you live? To be fair, I find a lot of these gardening so I would be that service cleaning up. Why or why not do you think people lose these where you are? I find it kind of funny. The only thing more likely to get stolen than a big lighter is a big pen or a carpenters pencil. You set a carpenters pencil down anywhere or you don’t show up to work one day all your carpenters pencils will be gone. It doesn’t matter how many you bought. Carpenters pencils are only $0.20 but you’d think they were made of gold.
