Left Turns

I'm a transplant from Detroit, and have been here for almost three years.

Left turns are ... interesting. Case and point:

- Kirby & Westheimer: when you have a SOLID GREEN 🟢 light, you yield to opposing traffic on your left turn. Look it up on Google Maps if you don't believe me. I live right near this intersection so I see, with alarming regularity, near-miss accidents all the time because this is the most confusing signal arrangement I've ever seen.

BUT! Just down the road at

- Kirby & Alabama: when you have a FLASHING YELLOW 🟡 light, you yield to opposing traffic on your left turn. The reason I'm calling this out is, literally from one major road to the next, there's no consistency in how traffic signaling works. It's like whoever showed up for work that day picked their personal favorite to program the signaling.

In Michigan, it's very simple: on a left, solid green means you have the right of way, you're not yielding to anyone. Again, on a left, a flashing yellow means you can go but look out for opposing traffic. And of course, red means stop. There is no other light signaling for left turns. And more importantly, EVERY. SINGLE. INTERSECTION. WORKS. THE. SAME. WAY.

Whereas in Texas, I'm double checking every light to make sure I'm not in the wrong before I make my next move.

I understand, TX government is all about Republicans intentionally making it difficult/breaking things to create their evidence that "government doesn't work," but this is legit, peoples lives at hand. Is there anything we can do to force our government to at least get it right on traffic signaling?!

And I'll add here that, while I don't excuse it, I can draw the dots between the inconsistent left turn policy and how some of y'all absolutely refuse to use the left turn lane (where there is no traffic signal) and will instead, turn left from a traffic lane (even though those bright yellow lines are RIGHT THERE). The number of times someone has nearly caused a wreck on Alabama because they, I guess, "don't recognize" the two yellow lines making the turn lane, is insane. I see it at least once a week. But with no flat rule on how left turns work, I guess I can see why they'd think of it as optional.

ETA:

And why do y'all SPEED through parking structures and parking lots then get on the road and go 2mph?

Final ETA

I've got the clarity now, that I think I needed.

- A solid green, and a flashing yellow, technically mean the same thing: unprotected left

My point is very straight forward: why not use one, instead of both?

- Michigan could use both protected and unprotected greens for lefts but we don't. We ONLY use protected greens. Green always means go. Yellow always means caution. Probably for exactly the reason I just called out above: you don't need a solid green AND a flashing yellow to communicate the same signal, just use one for absolute clarity.

So if you're looking up something akin to "does Michigan follow the same road rules as every other state?" I can see why some of you think you know what you're talking about. But having driven on Michigan roads from the age of 16 to about 38, and driven all throughout Canada (been to Toronto several times on my motorcycle and in my car), the Midwest, and Northeast, *if* we do unprotected greens in those parts of the US or Canada, they're very few and far between. Just like y'all have traffic signals on freeway entrances (ahem, some freeway entrances because clearly, being inconsistent is the way it's done here), that's another thing WE. DO. NOT. DO. You gun it and get in where you fit in. So even that is foreign to me. Just because it's on the books somewhere does not mean it's in practice in a given state.

Apartment Questions

Hi everyone!! I’m looking into moving into my own place in March and i’m looking to be close to Galen College of Nursing since I start in person classes in March but I also don’t want to be super far away from the medical center where i work. Ive narrowed down my list to these 3 apartment buildings and was wondering if anyone had any insight on what it’s like to live at these places.
My number one pick is Heritage Lofts
My second pick is Briarwood Apartments
My third pick is Woods on Lamonte
A backup option I also have is 5401 Chimney Rock Rd

U of Houston, Meow Wolf, mall—best hotel for visiting all?

I’m bringing my daughter to tour University of Houston, and we know nothing about the city. In addition to touring the school, we want to go see Meow Wolf and also she’d love to go to a really good mall. We’ll be ubering instead of renting a car, so I’d like to keep things relatively close if possible. Can you recommend a hotel or neighborhood that would be fairly centrally located for these three attractions? (I realize I didn’t specify a mall, but I’m hoping you can help me with that too. She’s 18 and loves, loves, loves to shop. Our local malls suck, so she’d be excited to go to a newer one with a wide array of stores.)

Thanks in advance.

Looking for 2 tickets to the Halloween party at the Museum of Science

Hey y'all, I know it's last minute, but my partner and I just found out about the Halloween party at the Museum of Science and it's already sold out. Does anyone have a way to get tickets, or is anyone no longer able to go and willing to sell theirs? Happy to pay face value. Thanks!

Edit: Before I pay, all I ask is for some verification in some way! I don’t want to get scammed

Midtown, Houston Bars/Clubs

So my friends are trying to go out for halloween this saturday. We normally go out in The Heights, but we are going friday night and we want to try Midtown for actual halloween because we’ve never been.

My questions are:

Do midtown clubs/bars normally charge cover? if yes, what’s the prices for each bar/club or a range so we can be prepared.

What midtown bars/clubs are good for dancing? My friends and I really like Heights Social and BLVD Park in The Heights, so something along those lines. I’ve heard Barbarella is a good place for dancing, but we’d like more options if possible.

Will there be special cover/requirements to get into these bars because it’s halloween? Barbarella is the only bar i’ve really looked at in the area and i can’t find anything that says it’ll have a special ticket/cover for halloween.

alright that’s it! any help would be greatly appreciated!! THANK YOU! also this is my first post ever, i’m excited hehehe😝

EDIT: I forgot about Main Street being a thing! If anyone can answer these questions for Main Street instead or in addition to Midtown, that would also be so wonderful and i’ll love you forever🫰

Soap on 59?

This morning during my commute I noticed that 59 (westpark to 610 area) seemed to have some sort of sudsy stuff all over it? I couldn’t see the lane lines because of the extra reflection. Anyone else see that or know what it could be?

Any Houston carpet cleaning company that can actually get rid of old dog urine smell?

We bought a house in the Heights back in August, and with the Houston humidity hitting this week, our living room carpet suddenly smells like a damp petting zoo.

The previous owners had two old Golden Retrievers. We knew they had pets, but during our walkthrough, the place was blasted with air fresheners, so we didn't catch it. Now every time it rains or gets humid outside, this horrible sour pet odor wicks right up out of the carpet.

My 4yo daughter has mild asthma, so I am terrified of using heavy chemical sprays or having a traditional steam cleaner come in and drench the padding, I know leaving the subfloor wet in Houston heat is just asking for toxic mold.

Does anyone know a low-moisture carpet cleaning company in Houston that actually neutralizes deep pet odors and is safe for kids with asthma? We really can't afford to replace 800 sq ft of carpet right now.

History Aficionados, wya?

I've very recently moved to Houston, and aside from devouring the delicious food, the spicy Sichuan burning my tummy, and getting lost in parking lots, I haven't really been doing much.

I really want to get into a low-key book club that focuses on world affairs non-fiction, mostly history. The recent political flurries and hopes of changes did get me excited!

So, I think I want to find and meet great people who wanna discuss history, history books, and chat about geopolitics or their favourite stories. I'm particularly passionate about mediaeval history and late antiquity, and I want to learn Texas history as well.

I'm willing to open a group as well if that helps!

Halloween

Hello!
I am curious about Halloween in Houston! Halloween is my favorite time of year, I currently live in Katy, Texas ! I am thinking about going to the black lagoon pop-up at Nickle city on Friday night I will likely drive with my boyfriend and have a lowkey night! Saturday I am trying to decide if we do the Montrose bar crawl and then stop by numbers since I saw that recommendation! I’ve never actually been out in Houston before ! But I see there is also the party at the museum of natural sciences but it’s looking a little pricey and I will likely uber Saturday so I can let loose! Curious about people’s thoughts/ recommendations !!!

Any foster cat parents? Need guidance!

I applied to be a foster through BARC and Houston Humane.

I found a 5 week old kitten on Westheimer and was unable to locate an owner or colony. She's been with us for three days and is doing great but we need to find her a forever home.

I am willing to care for her until she is adopted but I want to foster her through the system because we need help in listing her so adoptees can find her, we've had no luck asking people we know.

How long can I expect it to take for my foster application to be processed and how hard is it to be accepted? I've never fostered before I just want to help this kitten find a good home asap. How hard is it to get an appointment to surrender her, I checked the BARC website and they don't have a single appointment to surrender cats!
